I'll go with:

1) Superheroes (Avengers, Iron Man, Dark Knight)

2) Fantasy (Harry Potter, POTC, The Hobbit)

3) Sci-Fi epic (Avatar, Star Wars)

4) Computer animation (Pixar, Ice Age)

5) Iconic Action ™ (James Bond, Indy)

I actually agree with your choices. All of the recent high grossing movies fall into one of those 5 categories. You need to go all the way back to The Hangover to find a high grossing film from outside one of those 5 genres.

1 Superhero - Maybe "Personality-driven action" would be a better label. I'd include Bond and Indy in this category too

2 Pop speculative fiction - LOTR, Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games

3 CGI family films - Pixar, Dreamworks

4 High-concept comedy - Ted, Hangover, most Adam Sandler movies

5 Racially-charged, ultimately feel-good drama - Lincoln, The Help, The Blind Side

Can you give me a few examples of ”real movies” that are mega-blockbusters?

If he means "based on REAL events" movies, then he's talking about:

Lincoln, The Blind Side, Passion Of The Christ, Titanic, Braveheart, Argo, etc
