BOF's Top 100 Animated Films of All Time Ceremony! TOP 10 COUNTDOWN TIME! (p.36)

Recommended Posts

Something I just thought about: 1999 was really a banner year for flops/disappointments that later became cult classics. It was the year that brought us The Iron Giant, Office Space, Fight Club...I haven't seen The Prince of Egypt in almost 16 years, but images from it still stay with me. Rameses mourning his dead first-born was so solemn, it was amazing. (But I do remember cringing at the stuff with the comic-relief priest guys even at the age of 11. I always wished they had just left that stuff out.)

#27: Wreck-it Ralph (2012) - 443 Points

Country of origin: USA (Walt Disney Animation Studios)
Animation style: 3D Computer Generated

Posted ImagePosted Image
Plot:
A video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives.

Iceroll's list trivia:
Wreck-it Ralph is the first 3D computer generated film in this list since #45, A Bug's Life. That 18 movies in a row of "classic" format films and stop motion.

IMDB trivia:

Unlike most animated films, the principal actors regularly recorded audio sessions together in the same room, a situation which led to a lot of improvising.

BOF User Review
Wreck-It Ralph is a film I was expecting to love but it turned out to be a different kind of love. I was expecting to love Ralph for its video game references (which I did) but I loved the film because it had a heart of gold. The video game references made my little geeky heart explode into Mario Coins. The story was another thing I was surprised about. I thought the film would have more game worlds instead of just focusing on Sugar Rush. All in all I loved everything about this movie, I expect to see it again because I just loved it.

#26: Shrek 2 (2012) - 443 Points

Country of origin: USA (Dreamworks Animation)
Animation style: 3D Computer Generated

Posted ImagePosted Image
Plot:
Princess Fiona's parents invite her and Shrek to dinner to celebrate her marriage. If only they knew the newlyweds were both ogres.

Iceroll's list trivia:
Shrek 2 is the highest grossing film domestically in the Top 100 (but who didn't know that? :P). It also has the lowest average score in the top 30, with 17.7.

IMDB trivia:

In the Fairy Godmother's factory, some workers are putting potion bottles on a conveyor belt. One of the bottles is marked "Viagra".

BOF User Review
Talk about nostalgia. Obviously the animation doen't quite stand to what we get today but I was laughing basically all the way through. Though the pop culture references are now dated, I find them an endearing time capsule of the early 2000s.

#25: The Lego Movie (2014) - 449 Points

Country of origin: USA (Warner Animation Group)
Animation style: 3D Computer Generated

Posted ImagePosted Image
Plot:
An ordinary Lego construction worker, thought to be the prophesied 'Special', is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the Lego universe into eternal stasis.

Iceroll's list trivia:
The Lego Movie is the first film from 2014 to make the list. It is also the highest ranked film from Warner Animation, and it has the second lowest score average in the Top 25.

IMDB trivia:
The term "Master Builder" is actually an official designation by the Lego Company; per their website, "LEGO® Master Builders are the highly-trained and super-creative builders who design all of the official LEGO sets. Other LEGO Master Builders create giant, detailed sculptures out of LEGO bricks for LEGOLAND® Parks and special events all around the world."

BOF User Review:
HOLY FUCK! The Lego Movie might possibly been the greatest experience of my life.

Going in I expecting it to be great, but a gimmick maybe. I was wrong 100%. The film was just constantly surprising me and the humor is so natural and so fresh. It was understandable and funny to all ages. I took my 11 year old sister and I definitely laughed more then her, maybe even more then anyone in my theater.

On top of all this the reason this movie gets an A is because its more then humor and creative visuals its a great movie and a great satire. My eyes got extremely watery out of no where near the end.

#24: How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) - 458 Points

Country of origin: USA (Dreamworks Animation)
Animation style: 3D Computer Generated

Posted ImagePosted Image
Plot:
When Hiccup and Toothless discover an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace.

Iceroll's list trivia:
How to Train Your Dragon 2 is the highest ranking 2014 film on the list, and it edges out The Lego Movie by a mere 9 points. HTTYD2 is of course, also the most recent film on the list, which makes it all the more impressive that enough people have seen it already to make it rank #24.

IMDB trivia:
The first DreamWorks Animation film to use its new animation and lighting software through the entire production. Programs named "Premo" and "Torch" will allow much more "subtlety, in facial animation, the sense of fat, jiggle, loose skin, the sensation of skin moving over muscle instead of masses moving together." Dean DeBlois said, "I think the film looks a lot better than the first. In addition, our film is the first to showcase a whole new generation of software that has been developed at DreamWorks called Apollo. In past versions, if you wanted to do something as simple as arch an eyebrow, you would have to select the eyebrow from a menu and input what degree of arch you would want, enter that numerical amount, and wait for that to render," whereas the new system allows them to work in a much more intuitive way, using a stylus and touch-sensitive Cyntiq monitor to grab and manipulate the characters, which now render in real-time. "It allows animators to go back to working with their hands."

BOF Blurb:
Films:

You all know I hated the first one but this second film was a true masterpiece that deserved to be a massive box office success, the animation was fantastic and the storyline was amazing. I loved it

BOF User Review:
I saw it back-to-back with the first, and it's neat to see the two in comparison. The first is a magical journey that shows the amazing emotional connection between a boy and his pet. This is pretty much impossible to replicate, and so the sequel doesn't really even try. It accepts that as a given and goes off on its own direction.

Some things in the sequel are definitely an improvement. One of the weak points of the first was its presentation of female characters. Astrid was fun, but little more than an action girl foil, and now she's got her own adventure and arc that doesn't necessarily follow that of Hiccup. Ruffnut has an especially surprising fleshing out. And Valka is a great new addition, providing more emotional depth for the series. Blanchett provides a very good portrayal as someone who is not quite familiar and connected to the human world anymore.

The sense of wonder about how cool dragons are remains. The animation and music are both spectacular. It's a fun, gripping ride that goes places I didn't entirely expect, but which were welcome.

Even though the first film is probably better overall, this is an especially worthy sequel. It deserves to be in the conversation for best followup films.

5/5

Great that The Lego Movie is high.

The Lego Movie > Frozen

Probably shouldn't have said that, or Ethan and Films and all of the Frozenites are going to get angry.

At least 35 Animated movies > Frozen > several more animated movies > LEGO Movie
