Hmm...

2001

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind

Inception

Children of Men

Children of Men has already shown up so that's not one.

I bet you're right about Inception though (I'll admit I haven't seen it).  2001 and Close Encounters I'll admit I didn't vote for, though I thought Close Encounters was good.

Here, of course, is where the whole high-and-mighty-arbiter-of-accepted-taste thing falls apart.  I know its a bastion of modern cinema and all, but I didn't like 2001.  I thought it was overly long, poorly paced, and pretentious.  I thought it was similar in a lot of ways to Apocalypse Now which I also didn't like for basically the same reasons (though one key difference being that I thought 2001 was a little pretentious while I thought Apocalypse Now was extremely pretentious).

Ah, I forgot about Children of Men.  It's been soo long.   Maybe ET?  Is that considered sci-fi?  Has Alien showed up yet?

It took me almost half a dozen times to get through 2001.  Every time it was on TV when I was growing up, it would inevitably start late and between that and the Blue Danube I'd fall asleep.  Having finally seen it now a few times it's a movie I appreciate more than enjoy.  Though HAL's “I am sorry Dave, I am afraid I can’t do that” refusing to open the bod bay doors will never not be brilliantly chilling.

Yeah, HAL is indeed a really good bad guy.  Could be Alien.  There aren't really that many actually great sci-fi movies out there.

I bet (and I say this without having checked the ballots) the next 4 are:  Inception, Alien, Avatar, and one of the Star Wars movies (I'd guess either Return of the Jedi or Attack of the Clones).

43. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) 27 points- 9 votes

"I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."

1968_2001+Space+Odyssey_01.jpg

This movie is concerned with intelligence as the division between animal and human, then asks a question: what is the next division? Technology is treated as irrelevant to the quest--literally serving as mere vehicles for the human crew and as a shell for the immature HAL entity. Story told as a montage of impressions, music, and impressive and careful attention to subliminal detail. A very influential film and still a class act, even after 25 years.

Trivia: In the premier screening of the film, 241 people walked out of the theater, including Rock Hudson who said "Will someone tell me what the hell this is about?" Arthur C. Clarke once said, "If you understand '2001' completely, we failed. We wanted to raise far more questions than we answered."

Ruk's Comments

"Yes, the first film in our sci-fi run is the controversial classic, 2001. This movie tends to have a 'Love it or Hate it' reputation and, while I can understand people who dislike it, it's only grown better and better in my mind. I was on the edge of my seat when the apes discover the monolith. I absolutely adored HAL, one of the greatest movie villains of all time. And I like, everyone else, went WTF at the ending. But in a good way."

42. Gravity (2013) 27 points- 10 votes

"You just point the damned thing at Earth. It's not rocket science."

xBk4dOK.jpg

The veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski is in charge of the Shuttle Explorer's STS-157 mission to repair of the Hubble Telescope by the rookie specialist Ryan Stone. Out of the blue, Houston control aborts the mission warning that a Russian missile hit a satellite, causing a chain reaction and now there is a storm of debris coming upon them. Soon they lose communication with the Mission Control in Houston. The debris strike the Explorer and Ryan is released from the shuttle and Kowalski is forced to bring her back to the shuttle. However, the Explorer is completely damaged and now their only chance to return to Earth is to reach another space station. But they are short of oxygen and fuel.

Trivia: The film is ninety minutes long. In reality, the International Space Station travels at approximately 17,500 miles per hour, and orbits Earth every ninety minutes. The debris field also circles Earth every ninety minutes.

Ruk's Comments

"While I doubt it would've reached this high if it wasn't released only last year, I can't say I have any objections to this one being on the list. Hell, it reached No 4 on my top films of 2013 list. It's intense, claustrophobic and unlike almost any film I've seen before."

41. Star Trek (2009) 27 points- 11 votes

"I like this ship! You know, it's exciting!"

star_trek_xi_ver18.jpg

On the day of James Kirk's birth, his father dies on his ship in a last stand against a mysterious alien time-traveling vessel looking for Ambassador Spock, who, in this time, is also a child on Vulcan disdained by his neighbors for his half-human heritage. Twenty-five years later, Kirk has grown into a young troublemaker. Challenged by Captain Christopher Pike to realize his potential in Starfleet, he comes to annoy instructors like young Commander Spock. Suddenly, there is an emergency at Vulcan and the newly commissioned USS Enterprise is crewed with promising cadets like Nyota Uhura, Hikaru Sulu, Pavel Chekov and even Kirk himself, thanks to Leonard McCoy's medical trickery. Together, this crew will have an adventure in the final frontier where the old legend is altered forever as a new version of it begins.

Trivia: According to the audio commentary, J.J. Abrams had a meeting with George Lucas. During the meeting, Abrams asked how can he make the film better, to which Lucas stated that he should add lightsabers.

Ruk's Comments

"A worthy edition to this list, this film boasts complex characterisation, some great Moby Dick parallels and a performance from Ricardo Montalban that- Sorry, what? This isn't Wrath of Khan? But then what- the 2009 film? Really?

Joking aside, I do actually really like this film and I'm not adversed to having it on the list. It's a near perfect summer blockbuster. Admittedly, I also don't think it should be this high and/or above films like 2001 and Wrath of Khan. But it is still very good. There wasn't a moment I was bored with it and it has some good characterisation. I'd still prefer to see Wrath of Khan here though."

See I never saw Gravity in theaters, so while I did like the film, I feel like I lost something watching it on my 40" screen.

Star Trek 09, I like the film but if there's a Trek film to make any type of list Wrath of Khan would be the one.

40. Alien (1979) 28 points- 12 votes

"You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? Perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility."

alien.jpg

A commercial crew aboard the deep space towing vessel, Nostromo is on its way home when they pick an SOS warning from a distant planet. What they don't know is that the SOS warning is not like any other ordinary warning call. Picking up the signal, the crew realize that they are not alone on the spaceship when a alien stowaway is on the cargo ship.

Trivia: Ridley Scott stated that in casting the role of Ripley, it ultimately came down to Sigourney Weaver and Meryl Streep. The two actresses had been schoolmates at Yale.

Ruk's Comments

"The final sci-fi in this run and deservedly the winner. While Ridley Scott's output nowadays may be hit or miss, there's no-one who can deny that this film is utterly iconic. Claustrophobic. Intense. Gruesome. And it has one of the best film trailers period."
