It'll be very interesting to see how they sell this both at Cannes and here. Hasbro and Discovery Family are kind of cagey about acknowledging the adult fanbase, but they're clearly aware it exits. The show's campaign kind of straddles the line between the usual cringy girly-girl style and the sort of Disney XD/Cartoon Network mix of action imagery and metahumor.

Maybe they will do like Disney did and indirectly market it to the Bronies in the same way Disney marketed Zootopia to furries.

Would be amusing to see how a bunch of little boys at Cars 3 or Captain Underpants would react to a trailer for this

I'm wondering if Captain Underpants is still being made. There has been no development news since a long long time.

There was a recent study from Kidscreen, and My Little Pony had one of the biggest differentials between girl audiences and boy audiences.  The scale goes from 0-1000 and while MLP had a 736 score among girls, it had a 324 score among boys.  That is more than a 2:1 ratio.  From that data, we can already anticipate the jeers from boys when they sit through a trailer for this movie in 2017.  It also shows a big upcoming marketing challenge for Hasbro and Lionsgate.  MLP is starting with half the audience a standard animated feature film would have, because there won't be many boys that will be willing to watch this movie, and unlike the next property down from MLP, Disney Princess, MLP does not have the marketing advantages Disney would have.  So this movie is likely going to need one specific audience to turn out in order to be profitable.
