Avatar: The Way Of Water

 

Mexico’s sneaks are at $1.5M and Brazil’s at $1M for a total $4.4M across the whole Latin America region. Despite only being previews, The Way of Water was No. 1 in all Latin American markets on Wednesday. In the main, 55% of box office for the region came from 3D and other premium formats.

Hey! I've come back from the dead to report on this cinematic event. And because I still remember the 3-5 Billie meme.

 

Avatar 2 had a very strong start in Latin America, but in South America specifically, is hard to overstate how absolutely awful the release date and calendar configuration are.

 

Going to the movies in Christmas day or New Year is not something that south americans do (I think Mexico doesn't have that problem), cinemas are either closed or people asume that they are closed. That's why the Christmas-New Year window is one of the biggest blackholes box office wise. On top of that, this year both 24-25 and 31-1 fall on Saturday-Sunday, depressing the most lucrative days. You can check Rogue One holds in South American countries to see what can be expected. 

 

It's true that it benefits from Summer Holidays (in fact, it already does), but it faces strong competition from Puss in Boots. Avatar also has the problem that premium formats like IMAX are very rare and that is way too long for kids. This is especially a problem in the southern cone (Chile-Argentina-Uruguay) where most of the business is driven by families, which are likely to prefer the shorter, animated film for a summer movie. Unless WOM it's through the roof, Avatar 2 will lose a lot of its screens to Puss in Boots due to the depressed holds.

 

So, beware if you are expecting out of this world legs in South America, it truly faces an incredible uphill climb! 

 

BTW: The Chilean opening is really good $2,345,003, IMAX record. RO multiplier gives 7,3M USD.
