Jake Gittes
Quote more appropriate to the imagination than to reality Yeah, that describes what happens in this movie very well.

It is rib-achingly funny, desperately moving, it has complex and empathetic characters, its music is terrific, its cinematography is beautiful, all the acting is astounding, and it has an amazing sense of world building. I don't know how anyone would dislike the film unless they just hate drama films. Easily one of the best movies released this year. The marketing doesn't do it justice.

RichWS
I've been waiting for this to open in Brooklyn this weekend to see it. BEAT THAT.
Jake Gittes
Speaking of which, a good point someone made is that, while the movie is called Brooklyn, we spend like half of the NY-set screentime in a kitchen of a boarding house. Aside from the Coney Island scene, there's little to no insight into what that specific area of the city was like in the '50s. Meanwhile, J. Lawrence and S. Bullock are warm and approachable. Well, at least the personas they present are warm and approachable, Maybe that's why the latter two have had so many hit films while the former two have not been able to fully turn their technical talents into full-fledged box office clout. Funny you made this comparison, I think of Lawrence and Bullock as movie stars, but Ronan and Kidman I would think of as real actresses. Anyway, I watched this last night and its such a beautiful movie. Ronan is fantastic and its already on her way to having a Cate Blanchett/Meryl Streep type of career. I liked Emory Cohen in The Place Beyond the Pines, and he was really good in this too, I hope he gets more roles
