Yeah I think I remember Chasmmi saying anyone who chose nut job anywhere will get that counted as abstain, around the time of the 'always time for lubricant' SOTM.

The first year I ran the winter game 2 years ago, I believe Blankments was in 17th place with just the top 15, 10 and OWs to go. He ended up winning the whole thing. (I was 4th and ended up about 12th  )

 

Filmovie was in a similar position in the 2014 summer game and came through to win.

 

Despite this, I am kind of thinking now that the winner is likely to come from the top 9 unless somebody absolutely nails something that nobody else got (top 15, top 10, top 7, The Price is right SOTM etc)

Let's assume I earn 25k this weekend and my score would be 910k. All darkelf would need to do is earn 63k and he'd be tied with me. The chances of that happening are very slim as darkelf would have to get all of Parts 1 and 3 and one question from Part 2. If Damien got everything correct he'd be 1k behind me! It's definitely possible that next weekend I could be in 3rd; I'll already be losing 5k because I abstained from SOTM 11.

While I agree that WrathofHan's had a good comeback, its worth remembering that most of the points in the competition still remain to be earned. The leaders right now are at 800+k, but the final winner of the entire competition will probably end up with something like 2.5-3M points. That overstates things a bit, as some things are already set (TFA has probably had a strangle hold on the #1 spots in each category since the day it opened, and even moreso today) but per Chasmmi's request, we aren't going to start adding stuff like that up until after the deadline so its technically still up in the air.

 

Also worth noting is that while there are a lot of points still to come, a good chunk of those points are going to be gained by everyone. Everyone picked TFA to win everything, and it did, so while that's a bunch of points still to come, it'll be points that don't do much to move people farther apart or closer together. So, on the one hand, there are individual bonuses still to come that people could get which are, by themselves, bigger than the gap between WrathofHan and Telemachos. So WrathofHan's lead isn't safe in the slightest. On the other hand, some of those big bonuses will be scored by multiple people and the top few people will probably mostly be people who manage to score big on most of those big bonuses. As a result, they'll tend to have fairly similar scores and even small scores matter.

 

So, at the end of the day, a 200k lead isn't big enough to feel safe *and* every 1,000 can definitely matter in the end. Its the best of all worlds!
