Star Wars Tuesday - 37.3M (Tele/baumer bet for Wednesday drop is on page 24...much to learn one of them still has)

A movie slips even slightly and it's a loser, it goes up and it's hailed it as the second coming.

I just figured out a good portion(at least a quarter portion) of you are like a crowd at a tennis match.

may break another record - best TUE gross ever. Heading to high 30s tonight. Shd beat $35M TUE opening day of 2012 Spidey.

woot. Sounds like its trending up from 36-38.... I mean to be 36 or 37 is mid 30s, not high. So is the range now 37-39?

I'm going to flock to the dark side for a second and agree with the minority: by definition 30 hours is not a single day. For all intents and purposes TFA opened on Dec 17. I don't know how to logically view it otherwise.

Well, here's how you can:

I agree this recording of previews figures onto a films official opening day does seem to cause confusion. It wouldn't be too bad if all film lets say had there previews on a Thursday, and then added onto Friday. But some films have more than 1 preview day.

A good example of this is here in the UK, where a major British newspaper had an article stating that SW7 had failed to beat the opening of Spectre, but the reality is that SW7 had previews on a Thursday, whereas Spectre had previews going back all the way to its Monday evening opening after the premiere.

As you have said when one looks at the record book for SW7 opening on Fri it will show some $120 mil, whereas in practice it was only some $63 mil.

I think the preview BO should be recorded separately, as just like a normal days gross.

Virtually whole world with couple exceptions (like Domestic/UK) do record previews separate and are not part of OD/OW(exceptions are midnight+), however even though locally the territories do it and record correctly for record books etc the INTL  OW total will always be inclusive of any previews, so if territory had previews night before, the weekend before ,whenever.

When the film has its official Opening weekend the international report will include those previews as part of OWE even though locally it was never recorded/reported that way.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is on pace to overtake Jim Cameron’s “Avatar” as the highest-grossing film of all time globally, just four days after it opened in the U.S. and most of the world.

That might seem premature, but what a four days they’ve been for Disney’s blockbuster, the J.J. Abrams-directed seventh entry in the iconic sci-fi film franchise launched by George Lucas in 1977. On Monday, the film’s $40 million haul put an exclamation point on an incredible opening weekend, in which it shattered records with the biggest domestic, foreign and worldwide openings. Its current worldwide total is more than $610 million.

If TFA made $20 million in previews nobody would even be discussing whether or not they should be counted with Friday. This has been going on for years now and all of a sudden its a problem.

Normally, I would agree wholeheartedly. The only issue I see is the portion(lol) that came from the marathons which had to be going on for hours before and cost way more than even the most expensive ticket. That is definitely skewing Friday. I just wish I had hard numbers on how much those marathons did so I could analyze their impact.

I don't see how this beats Avatar WW. Sell more tickets, sure, but earn more dollars? I dunno. The exchange rate and 3D share differentials seem like it would be too much to overcome.
