2017 40M OWs - 23 down, 1 to go! (It's Time For The Year to End.)

Recommended Posts

So 2017 will at least tie the record as The Last Jedi will make close to 40M or more than that on Thursday previews alone.

As for the 2nd one, I doubt Pitch Perfect 3, coming off a 70M opening 2nd movie and on a holiday weekend, falls below the mark. Jumanji also has a shot, given the positive wom it's supposedly been getting. So yeah, this record is probably goin' down, baybay.

Would The Post count if it got to 40M on the weekend it expands?

@Poe Blankeron Could you answer this?

If The Post makes it to 40M on its expansion, it'll be counted for 2018. We've reached this crisis before with American Sniper and the decision was made that wide releases count for the year of the weekend it takes place in.

So, unless Jumanji breaks out big time, this ain't happening. Pitch Perfect 3 was its biggest hope and that's definitely not happening now. And Jumanji's Friday is very similar to - but technically under - Sing's (whose 3-day opening was 35M), so that is too an uncertainty. Although last year, Christmas Eve fell on Saturday, so Jumanji has a shot for a great enough Sat bump that it may push its opening over 40.

Other than that possibility, this club is dead :(

So close, and yet so far.

Predictions for next year:

1. Fifty Shades Freed

2. Black Panther

3. Ready Player One

4. New Mutants

5. Rampage

6. Infinity War

7. Solo

8. Deadpool 2

9. Oceans 8

10. Incredibles 2

11. JW 2

12. Ant-Man and the Wasp

13. Hotel Transylvania 3

14. M:I 6

20. Ralph 2

22. Aquaman

23. Mary Poppins Returns

I'm a little shaky on a couple of them, but if there's one or two breakouts in the mix (The Post, Wrinkle in Time, Nutcracker), maybe it'll be broken next year?
