I think people tend to forget how massive Shrek 2 really was:

35 Black Panther BV $652,558,996 2018 1984^
36 Shrek 2 DW $652,247,500 $441,226,247 2004

Considering Shrek 2 sold a TON of cheaper priced kid tickets, its admissions number is likely still a lot higher than Black Panthers's.

That's not really fair. Lower prices helps with sales.

It's the basic principle behind supply and demand.

This 2004 was a great time to sales tickets.... Shrek 2 did a massive 581.6m in 2018 dollars, it would have probably did more with higher ticket price (and would have probably been in 3D), but would have not necessarily sold as much ticket under those conditions.

Also there was no Vudu, Hulu, Netflix streaming, Amazon streaming, golden age of tv, Redbox, omnipresent facebook, omnipresent smartphones, etc.

The market is much more competitive now.

lol the people trying to defend Shrek 2, TDK, and even JW. BP is going to top them all in ticket sales very shortly.

Not so much defend as put some perspective to it. And considering the increasingly fractured entertainment marketplace it only makes Panther look better.

I still think Shrek 2 is one of the best Animated Movie Sequels and is Top 3 of Dreamworks' Best Films. A little bit sad that all these years later Dreamworks has yet to make a film that made more money than any of the Shrek films unadjusted in North America.

EDIT: Though I guess maybe Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda had more admissions than Shrek Forever After
