After being disappointed by Nausicaa, I was worried I'd see this as a "minor" Miyazaki.

 

On the contrary, Castle in the Sky is an exhilarating adventure that's up there with the other major Miyazaki films I've seen. The plot and themes may be a bit shallower than with Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, but Miyazaki spins a much better yarn here than he did with his previous movie.

This is great, caught it in the cinema last year, lovely film and one of the best Ghibli films I've seen.

This is low key one of the best movies in Miyazaki's career, maybe even the best.

On that note, this movie's runtime is surprisingly long, lol. Past the two hour mark, along with Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and The Wind Rises. It certainly feels shorter than it is, though, unlike Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. Not to say those two movies are bad. They definitely are not.

Interesting characters, and Miyazakis deep love for everything flying, make for an engrossing mix. What starts as a fun, character-driven romp gets pretty serious and big towards the end.

from what i recall this has an insanely fun first half but kinda loses me towards the end.
