I believe Nick had a partnership for a tv show last year which then turned into a partnership for the movie.

Fun fact - Paramount and Nick originally were going to do an all CG smurfs film described as Lord of The Rings meets Princess Bride back in the early 2000s but lost the rights in 2008

They did made a Smurfs 3 script and were trying to find a possible release date for it in 2014, so I imagine when they bought the rights from Paramount to make the first movie it was not a just 2 movies deal or anything of the sort.

Low result for Smurfs 2 probably made them never go through the third one and loose the right back.

But we must remember Sony did make the animated Smurfs Lost Village in 2017

#neverforget

With the long time it usually take to make an animated movie that could be that one.

Low result for Smurfs 2 and Smurfs 3 probably made them never go through the third one and loose the right back.

Sony likely let the rights lapse after The Lost Village underperformed. That movis being greenlit by an obsolete regime certainly didn't help matters, nor did Smurfs 2's big drop from the first film.

That script did actually leak out following the Sony hack.

Seems to be a mostly standalone thing akin to the recent Suicide Squad refresh. There are returning characters (in this case the two gray Smurfs from the second movie) but it otherwise largely ignores the previous movie.

Chris Miller (Shrek the Third and the first Puss in Boots movie) is directing: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/smurfs-musical-movie-1235164732/

Quote

Chris Miller, the Oscar-nominated helmer of 2011’s Puss in Boots, is set to direct Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation’s untitled Smurfs musical, which is slated for a Dec. 20, 2024 theatrical release. The studios plan to highlight the announcement this week at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.

Earlier this year, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation announced a partnership with Smurf worldwide licensors holders LAFIG Belgium and IMPS to produce multiple movies based on the Smurfs property created by Belgian artist Pierre Culliford, known as Peyo. This untitled musical, from a screenplay by Pam Brady (Team America: World Police), is the first of those projects.

Unless Avatar 2 stumbles hard, this movie's going to have a tough uphill climb against Avatar 3. Does anyone actually care about the Smurfs these days, let alone want another movie about them? The Bad Guys numbers for this one at best IMO.

had no interest in this but Chris Miller as the director is promising.

edit: DiscussingFilm had a tweet where they said Chris Miller (The Lego Movie) will direct the new Smurfs movie, but they have deleted it.

Starting to think it might be a differrent Chris Miller, the same guy who directed the first Puss in Boots https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1844237/?ref_=tt_ov_dr

edit 2: yes, it was Puss and Boots' Chris Miller. Oh well :sadno:
