And look at that PTA from Neon Demon … ugly, ugly. Next weekend: Weeell things are looking much brighter, Ice Age 5 hits theaters and should be good for an opening in the million-admission range! Other openers remain limited, High-Rise maybe the most interesting one. With the Euro2016 still dominating the evenings, expect another slow weekend for most everything except family stuff.

Aristis
I totally forgot Ice Age! The previous parts were huge here. The second one still holds the crown for the biggest Opening Week (3.612.053), which is crazy. With the fourth it began to sink though. Still, interest should be there. But I wouldn't be surprised if it would open to "only" 800k admissions - while I hope for a million of course. Soccer on Saturday could have a big impact, bad weather predicted as well. I hope it'll land on the bright side.

But let's hope, theaters sure can use the business!

IndustriousAngel
well if it DOES reach 800k that would be ok ... the lower end of estimates however (550k) would be quite a disappointment

IndustriousAngel
Hm, can't be football alone, Ice Age should make most of its money during the day - 2nd estimate from insidekino has it at the lower end of expectations, not even 700k admissions. el sid
Back again :). 54 minutes ago, Fullbuster said: Graying Germany, much less kids and teens than in 2012 Maybe a little bit ;). But I remember watching the sequel in cinema in the evening in a completely sold out cinema hall and the average age was around 25, no kids and also middle aged people in the crowd. I think the hype is not the same anymore. The last two sequels were well liked IMO but not such a surprise like the first one. I liked Ice Age 1&2 very much but 3 and 4 were only quite nice. Maybe I will see Ice Age 5 in theaters in the following weeks and maybe not. But of course football is a big factor not only today but also was on Thursday and Friday. The football match yesterday Wales vs. Belgium had a total of 14.42M TV viewer (5.45M of it were 14-49 years old). Plus there's public viewing and viewing in pubs or even restaurants, football combined with barbecues and so on... Maybe the next or the weekend after next (that depends on this evening) will show a better hold than expected. IndustriousAngel
What has to be considered, I think, is the steady rise in releases ... the market goes up and down but it DOES have its limits, and where in earlier years there were, say, 4 CGI funnies per year, nowadays we have 20 or more ; at least 10 of which go wide. (for 2015, there's at least 10 CGI kids movies that opened to >500 theaters, and I didn't even count Pixels ...)

IndustriousAngel
Well, a bestseller will still be a bestseller (best examples this year's Zootopia and last year's Minions) but you really have to deliver to draw the crowds in ... in earlier years, with 4 big releases, the kids had not much choice when their parents/aunts/uncles too them to the movies ... nowadays, there's always at least two CGI kids movies and one reallife in release, and sometimes more. This weekend, we have - additional to Ice Age 5: Jungle Book Zootopia Angry Birds Alice 2 and maybe Warcraft for the same demo ... and that's at smaller Multiplexes, bigger ones also have the smaller and/or older releases. And Sunday, there's previews for "Smaragdgrün".
