Purple Minion

Mexico Box Office | Planet of the Apes is king with $6.4M OW; good holds for Garfield and Challengers

Elvis, Maverick, Black Phone and -to a lesser extent- Everything Everywhere really showing staying power for adult-oriented titles. Great legs for all of them:

  • Elvis: x3.3 from opening. May finish with a x4.5
  • Maverick: x4.4 from opening (sans early previews) / x8.4 from early previews. Longer staying in the Top 10 than every single summer blockbuster
  • Black Phone: x5 from opening. Shall near a x5.4-x5.5
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once: x4 from opening (sans limited release) / x19 from limited release

Bullet Train opens to an OK $3M.

Totals: Minions 2 $36.8M, around 750M, passes the first movie and very close to Incredibles 2 , Thor 4 $27.5M, may not reach 600M lc; Super-Pets $4.3M, will it even make 100M lc?

Super Pets dropped 39%.

Don't be so dramatic....

A 39% drop from a poor OW is not good. For an animated movie based on a popular franchise, in the middle of school holidays, in one of the most children-friendly markets in the world! Even The Lorax did 127M lc with 2.8M audience ten years ago.

  • Meh for Bullet Train, quite lackluster. Let's see if it legs for the rest of the summer break.
  • Indeed dissapointing for Super-pets; will go above $5M but below Smallfoot, Space Jam, Lego Batman and even Storks.
  • Impressive for Rise of Gru; it still has fuel to past above Multiverse of Madness. It shall cross $40M; becoming only the third title to surpass the milestone this year. Both 2015 and 2019 have the record with the most $40M+ grossers (4) and with Wakanda Forever and Way of Water coming out later this year the record could be either tied or broken
  • Elvis is now Baz Luhrmann's biggest hit in the market both in lc and admissions

Distributors and exhibitors are joining to offer La Fiesta del Cine which will try to get people back into theatres offering several discounts between Sept 5 and Sept 7. Those which include:

  • Traditional 2D tickets for $29 lc ($1.5 USD)
  • VIP tickets for $69 lc ($3.5 USD)
  • IMAX, PLF, 3D, 4DX for $49 lc ($2.5 USD)

It'll seek to take advantage of runs from titles like Nope, Dragon Ball Super, After 3 and the re-release of No Way Home. All chains will participate and they're hopeful it works so they can replicate it next year.

On the other hand, Dragon Ball Super is seeing the worst pre-sales for a DB title. Can't really tell which way is going to go since is a heavily fan-rush and presale heavy franchise.

@Carlangonz, @Purple Minion, How does One Piece Franchise perform in LATAM (Mexico)? Any info about RED?

Up to a few years ago it was quite small and releases were pretty limited and only came within selected anime festivals. It has exploded in recent years so I can see a full theatrical release but couldn't say how high it could go atm

Following an antecedent for being pioneers, Morelia-based chain Cinépolis introduced VIP and reclinable seats way back in the 90s, following Avatar's success were the first chain to introduce 4DX into Americas in 2011 and Mexico had most of its screens with digital projection and reserved seating by late 2011.

Now they're looking to become world's first major chain to have laser projection in all 100% of its market presence. Currently 1,300 of their worldwide screens have got this technology with mexican theatres accounting for just over 1,000 of these projectors. Of course they're seeking for Mexico to be their first country with such technology in a wide coverage. They're really focused to make the switch in most of their screens before The Way of Water releases.

Country's top location, Forum Buenavista already has successfully completed the transition.
