Mexico Box Office | Joyful $68.4M Tuesday total for those pesky emotions

Recommended Posts

TS3 is #6 in admissions (14,826,134) but #4 in lc gross (777,482,842). 3D was still a novelty back then and allowed to charge higher ticket prices.

Bad new for SS, that'd be a quite low 2.4 Fri to Sun multiplier. BVS' was closer to 3, even after opening on a Thu (20% Thu to Fri drop)!

Weekend estimates (Screendaily, Deadline)

  • SS #1 with $10.4M 3-day OW (about 190M lc), so the drop wasn't as deep as anticipated. Wonder what was Cinemex's impact. In any case, top August opening weekend ever, highest opening weekend of all time for Will Smith and 2nd best ever for WB.
  • SLOP up to $14.7M, a $3M weekend (60% drop)... those low ticket prices keep impacting the gross.
  • Tarzan $13.7M total, #2 OS market.
  • Lights Out $4M total, top OS market.

Not sure, the animated movies are taking a bit hit this year with lower ticket prices. $20M may be doable if it doesn't collapse further.

Official weekend numbers. SS is the #10 highest 3-day OW ever and the #3 highest of the year behind CW and BVS. It's in the Top 20 of the year after just 3 days.

Mmm hard to tell. Mexico is (for better or for worse) immune to negative critics and nostalgia can still play a big card. However, female-driven comedies are not overly popular. The only recent comparisons I can think of are TMNT2 (over $9M), Goosebumps ($7M) and Spy ($4M).  My forecast would be closer to the reptiles than the other two.

Weekly figures. SS shows no signs of slowing down, adds another $5M from Mon to Thu (who knows what the total will be had Cinemex shown it), and it's in a great position to have a fab second weekend. Much of it depends on the strength of Ghostbusters and BFG, both opening today.

In other milestones, SLOP jumps over Zootopia and FD is literally two or three shows from reaching the coveted 10M audience threshold. Interestingly, SLOP has the lowest average price for animated movies this season: 37.5 lc against 45 lc for FD/IA5.

Weekend estimates (Screendaily, Deadline)

  • SS had a good 2nd weekend, repeating at #1 about $4.3M for $19.5M total. Can't image what the total would be with Cinemex. May challenge FD for the #3 yearly rank.
  • Soft opening by Ghostbusters, $2.5M at #2. It beat Spy by 77%, for what it matters.
  • SLOP OW about $2M for a $18.4M total. Another 1 million or so admissions, very close to IA5.
  • BFG barely registers with $1.4M OW, for a family movie it's not good at all, even if Roald Dahl is not known in this market.
  • Lights Out reaches $5M, #1 OS market.

Official weekend numbers. Easy repeat at the top for SS, having a similar track as BVS so far. High chance of reaching 500M lc with weak competition next weekend - was expecting more for Ghostbusters and BFG.

Both SS and SLOP enter the all time Top 40 in lc, see table below. Audience-wise, FD becomes the 21st movie to pass the 10M audience threshold; ticket prices for SLOP are back to normal, resulting in a 55% drop in audience vs 43% drop in gross.

35  371,356,228  The Amazing Spider Man 2 (2014)

36  366,034,428  Suicide Squad (2016)
37  359,431,756  Transformers 3 (2011)
38  348,372,103  Madagascar 3 (2012)

39  347,000,000  Deadpool (2016) <-- estimate

40  343,284,721  Secret Life of Pets (2016)
41  340,304,334  Nosotros los Nobles*  (2013)

According to a study by American Film Market & Conferences, horror and romantic comedies are the most popular movie genres in Mexico, and are watched in this market more than anywhere else (cue Conjuring 2 success). On the other hand, comedy, drama and documentaries have fewer fans.
