I am wondering because similar sci-fi movies like Gravity, Interstellar, and Martian have done well, and I am wondering if something similar with the Arrival? It'll be showed at the Busan film festival today but it doesn't seem to have a commercial release date yet. But you're right, the market is very open to sci-fi themed movies right now and with good WoM it could easily break out.

Can someone tell me how Don't Breathe is doing there and give me grosses in dollars? thanks It was just released two days ago. I'll give you the admissions and gross i dollars Pre-release: 43,283 ($335K) wed: 61,271 ($432K) Thu: 71,116 ($499K) Not a bad opening considering the age limitation and the genre. Horror flicks hardly ever open big. Ratings are in the mid 8s out of 10 on Naver which is pretty good for a horror film. It could increase during the second week if it gets good word of mouth.

Not all sci-fi b/c some like Star Wars and Star Trek movies have not done well at the Korean Box Office, but this category of Sci-Fi movies I mentioned have done well and I feel like Arrival fits into that category. On an absolute scale, TFA didn't do badly at all. It just did poorly when compared to other territories but the star wars/star trek brand is close to a non-entity over here so it makes sense. But yeah, films like star wars and star trek are basically space operas with little to no relevance to scientific facts and themes which is the difference I think you're alluding to between the sub-genres. picores
That's like a 50% bump for Peregrine from last Friday.... Is WOM through the roof or what?

I think the early online reviews were averaging in the mid 9s out of 10, it may have dropped since then though. It is pleasantly and surprisingly big though. I have students who have gone to see it as their first family trip to the cinema since Civil War. Burton is popular here though.

chasmmi
So 'Tim Burton's Xmen' may well outgross the actual Xmen in Korea. This has a shot of becoming the 2nd highest grossing Hollywood film of the year. We shall see hold it does next weekend.

It is doing surprisingly well, Asura totally failed to deliver and Peregrine's stealing that momentum. still not sure about #2 (current #2 is Zootopia with 4.7M adm. after Civil War's 8.7M) but top 5 (3.1M+) is definitely a possibility. would have to see how it faces well against Lucky and Inferno first, then Doctor Strange.

Rsyu
Pretty bad for Inferno, considering Da vinci code and Angels and demons did pretty well in Korea. Ratings on Naver is pretty decent though (low 8s), maybe it'll have some legs
