Just saw 곡성 (The Wailing).

What a horrible little film.

I was actually worried about its chance of having been overpraised by the pretentious stans. hmm.. :mellow:

or about the possibility that I personally don't like it at all. like Kim Ki-Duk's films. No matter how much those film critics go all coo coo over him I just can't agree with his aesthetics or point of view or whatsoever. Feel neutral about Na Hong-Jin tho.

The critic score is ridiculous. The ending made no kind of sense whatsoever and some of the plot devices were downright baffling. Maybe I just didn't "get it" -_-

A far cry from his debut project "The Chaser" which I very much enjoyed

Just out of curiosity for my entry in the summer game, does CIVIL WAR still have a chance at crossing 10m admissions? I don't have a good grasp at how leggy movies tend to be in SK.

No chance at all.

CW legs have been atrocious and much worse than AoU, even with much higher ratings. I guess at this point Marvel has set fanbase and expecting great legs for sequels are out of the question. It'll interesting to see how big Infinity movies get with farewell of RDJ, Evans and Hemsworth.

yeah, no chance at all like @Olive said. I'm quite shocked too, even with the fact that Korean audience sometimes go cold turkey real fast.

compared to the north american market it's either more volatile or more leggy I guess, since the country is smaller and very heavily/easily affected by WOM plus the market has relatively less variety of options for the audience each week with the much extreme winner-takes-it-all nature.

The three dominant cinema chains have the almost complete control over the theater counts and they allocate like 90% of the whole screens of Korea to the one or two "big movies" and they change very rapidly and immediately based on the performance, while there's really no place for the mid-sized movies unless they prove themselves and show exceptional WOM/legs and play like a big player and join the big league. (i.e. About Time, The Intern, Begin Again...)

Take BvS for example, it opened to 1,600 screens but the bad WOM hit it and the screen counts immediately plummeted to 1,100 the weekend after, then to 540, 270, each weekend. Zootopia on the other hand, only started with about 580 screens but had a way more consistent run and didn't lose almost any of the screens by weekend 11 or something and even expanded at times after the good WOM. Think the theater counts peaked on its wkd 5-7, at around 700. Korea's favorite indie from the recent years, Begin Again, started with merely 180 screens then one and a half month later it expanded to 530.

so I think the Wailing really cut off CW's late legs.. It's the current go-to movie and the fact that it's a very controversial one got Korean audience very excited too. Because of a slight totalitarianism that we have here you just have to be up to date and join "the debate" everywhere you go, at work, on TV/the internet: "Haven't you seen it yet? I think this was this and that was that..." CW on the other hand was more like a unanimous crowd pleaser which ironically made it a little less interesting.

another thing about CW is that,

it seems many of the Korean audience couldn't relate to Captain's motive to support Bucky and thought Bucky was despicable to murder Tony's parents, even though it wasn't under his free will. Since patricide is like the biggest taboo here and obeying to parents/respecting the elderly is such an important issue people just couldn't root for Cap/Bucky anymore and the most of the reactions were like "poor, Tony.. I hate Captain now!"
