gladiator1
Michael fassbender and Ryan Gosling really? What does A-list refer to exactly? and Adam Sandler Lol come on..... I like his old films and him in it but does that make him an A-list actor? or is this just all opinions? His long streak of success easily makes him an A-lister. TLK
I fully agree with that article. Unless an actor/actress can OPEN a movie on their own without any help they are not A-list in terms of Box Office. How is Denzel paid 20 mill for a film that has the potential to make no more than 100 mill with very little overseas money? Why are studios that stupid? Denzel's movies usually make around $170-200 million worldwide and they do good home media and TV business internationally. Here is another way of looking at it. Pick any movie that Denzel has done in the past decade, replace him with an actor who makes $2 million and then try to project how much that movie will make. Safe House ? Unstoppable ? The Book Of Eli ? These are generic action movies that don't even make $75 million worldwide these days. If Denzel is more than doubling the total take of the movie then he is worth an additional $18 million. A Marvel Fanboy
The True Box Office A-List Actors Denzel Washington Brad Pitt (Here because of WWZ) Will Smith Tom Cruise Leonardo DiCaprio Adam Sandler (Star is in decline) Matt Damon George Clooney ( A bit over-rated but he chooses difficult movies and he carries them on his own shoulders) Actresses Angelina Jolie Jennifer Aniston Melissa McCarthy (Jury is still out on her long term marketability + She has very little appeal internationally) Sandra Bullock (She has held A-list status for only 4 years out of her 20+ year career) Maybe I am forgetting a couple of actors but this is more or less the complete list of actors who have a track record of carrying movies without any help (good co-Actors, great reviews, awards recognition etc.). Ben Stiller should be there if there is to be another comedy actor. Cameron Diaz is A-lister too. Clooney has little box office power internationally and he can not guarantee DOM either. So not A-lister.
4815162342
I think McCarthy needs a couple more strong outings she headlines (and no bombs she headlines during that period) before she can be considered to be approaching the A-list. The only films she has headlined have been this year and only 2. Both did great, but two hits in one year does not make an A-lister.
baumer
I think McCarthy is the very definition of A-lister.
The Futurist
Your definiton of A List is a bit restrictive. It also mean being in demand, having the possibility to choose. By your definition, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, Jlaw, Anna Hathaway, Jessica Chastain are what ? Actresses looking for a job ? Same for Fassbender, Cumberbatch, Christian Bale etc etc Being a movie star goes beyond being able to open a movie on your own. That is the super elite and for each generation, there are very few of them. The Cameron Diaz number given by The Hollywood Reporter seems cucko to me. If she really got 42m, I really wonder how the hell Fox made a dime with the movie. The movie was a fine success but Ted or Hangover it wasn't. She lowed her paycheck to $1M so she can get a 20% share of worldwide box office. The studio also made millions through homemedias.

A Marvel Fanboy
The 21 Surprising Hollywood Actors Whose Names Sell Movies Overseas Robert De Niro, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Keanu Reeves top the list of stars that international buyers — and audiences — love to see in Hollywood movies. In addition to usual suspects like Tom Cruise, Bruce Willisand Matt Damon, sales agents say the names who matter overseas include somewhat surprising rising stars MichaelFassbender, Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as well as aging stalwarts Robert De Niro, Liam Neeson andJohn Travolta. Actresses with foreign sales value are far fewer and include Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett,Angelina Jolie, Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson. "It seems like a lot of people, but it's not when you are all going after the same people," says The Solution's Lisa Wilson, a veteran sales agent. Fancyarcher
Joseph Gordon Levitt? That’s funny. Only Looper has done well overseas (and even then it wasn't overly impressive). A Marvel Fanboy
Eight-Figure Endorsements: Who's Getting Them in Hollywoodhttp://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/beyonce-brad-pitt-jennifer-lawrence-625404 Predictably, A-listers are the most-prized targets on Madison Avenue. Although every deal is unique, one top commercial agent says he's seeing more eight-figure paydays than ever before. Long-term relationships have become a key way to optimize revenue, says another endorsement agent who, when it comes to beauty deals for his top female talent, only fields multiyear offers. Charlize Theron struck gold with her gilded J'Adore ads, spinning her initial three-year deal with Dior (reportedly worth $5 million annually when she signed in 2004) into an iconic partnership nearly a decade later. The fashion house might hope its new arrangement with Robert Pattinson works just as well, as it is paying him at least $12 million to represent its Dior Homme fragrance for the next three years.
