Weekly China Box Office Preview: “Go Away, Monster Hunt!” - Inspirational Comedy Set To Knock 'Monster Hunt' Off Its Perch

Bai Baihe (also in Monster Hunt) plays Xiong Dun in the film adaptation of Go Away, Mr. Tumor! and director Han Yan recounts her life story through dreamscapes meant to represent the illustrator's vivid imagination; see the trailer below to get an idea of what we mean. Early reactions have been very positive calling the film heartbreakingly funny and Ms. Bai’s best performance since her debut in Love Is Not Blind ($56M). The film grossed $2M from sold-out Saturday night previews and we expect its uplifting theme to strike a chord with Mainland filmgoers, earning $150M+ by the end of its runMr. Tumor's box office total will also benefit from premium-priced IMAX ticket sales.

Not good, its keep dropping.

Monday $~6.21 yuan

Today $~6.42 yuan

Yea I think this means that if a movie was expected to make 100m USD in China, now the max would be 96m.

It probably means movies like MI5 and Minions will make 4-5% less than their ceiling projections

ie MI5 in the 190s instead of 200s, and Minions in the 90s - low 130s instead of the 100-150s.

We should probably revise our projections for Minions, T5, IO, MI5, Antman and Pixels and lower them a bit.

I have heard news that this drop in exchange rate is a currency devaluation ordered by Chinese government. We should not discard more punctual drops. To put into perspective the grosses from now, it is quite better to see figures in local currency instead dollars. That is the best possible comparison. Another thing is if we want to see spectacular OS/WW figures, but the truth is that Chinese people use Yuan, not Dollar.

Edit: with current exchange rates, top 10 changes in this way relative to Monday (approx figures. Correct me if I am wrong):

1. F7: 390 - 376

2. Monster Hunt: 337 - 325

3. TF4: 318 - 307

4. AoU: 236 - 227

5: Jurassic World: 229 - 220

6. Avatar: 216 - 208

7. Titanic: 210 - 203

8. Lost in Thailand: 204 - 197

9. Journey to the West: 201 - 193

10. Breakup buddies: 188 - 181

It will definitely impact the new movies going to play in China and am thinking we need to re-think how MI5, Minions and other films will do there and lower the ceiling a bit for them.

For example if MI5 is exected to do 200 million, now it will probably make 192m etc

We should wait to see if drops in currency continue or it has already finished. If we were thinking in $200m for MI5 before this change, we should say something like 1.2-1.25 billion Yuan. When the film is released we will be able to "traduce" that number to dollars with a more accurate figure.

For the record, before this drop, $100m was more or less 625 million Yuan.
