Or it may just mean China can support more movies at once. Not that every movies is gonna gross that much more, that still depends on demand.

Yeah.... movies just can't keep increasing indefinitely.Though I think 225-250M should be achievable.

TF4 won't increase that much as people expecting.

Very much agree with this

IMO, not before 2016 at least. Its not going to stop increasing within next a few years.

You will have to digg deeper to know exactly what is happening.

First question is, why IMAX is cooperating with Huayi? Apprantly Huayi is the most powerful non-state run film producing company. But that is not enough.

Obviously, if all major Hollywood IMAX movies (around 20 in 2013) can get released in China, the IMAX corporation would have no need to make/convert local IMAX films. Just release the Hollywood IMAX ones, and that would be enough for IMAX, the theaters and movie goers. The thing is, there will always be blackout periods for foreign releases and many big Hollywood movies couldnot get into China due to a variety of reasons. And what the IMAX will have to do is making local IMAX releases during these periods. Thus Huayi becomes their first choice.

The problem is, however, some local films, almost all IMAX releases except CZ12 so far actually, dont have the necessity to do IMAX at all. Pure money grabs. The audience dont feel the need either. And attendances are much lower for these local IMAX releases than most Hollywood ones. In current Life of Pi VS Back to 1942 case, apprantly IMAX corp. and the theaters, especially Wanda cinemas, must have lost a couple of million dollars. Yet they still did it. You know, a no choice's choice, at least better than nothing.

What is hilarious is, almost all these non December Hollywood blackout periods are caused/produced by Huayi Brothers. Yet the IMAX would have to play nice with them, as long as Huayi still is the most powerful figure (China Film is not counted) in China's film industry.

Originally, local IMAX films are not a bad thing. However, with more and more local movies go for IMAX, it means less and less Hollywood IMAX films, which not only bothers most movie goers, but also causes further problems to China's already extremely crowded and abnormal release schdules.

Update:

Now what ? The Hobbit fans in China yesterday dropped the news that the Hobbit IMAX version would not be released due to the Huayi/IMAX exclusive agreement on Huayi's IMAX film Chu Mo on Weibo. And that caused huge boycotts and dissatisfaction towards Huayi's Chu Mo that eventually Huayi decided to give the agreement an up. It means now Hobbit IMAX can possibly get a go in China after all, sharing screens with Cho Mo. And according to Huayi, their agreements with IMAX will not be exclusive from 2013, which means the same tragedy that happened to Life of Pi IMAX most likely will not happen again.

Greats news !

The Hobbit IMAX is a go ! :D

Wait a moment.

Yesterday there was an uncomfirmed rumor out, and fans were crying and protesting on the internet. Then Huayi is SO scared and gives up their IMAX rights..... ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

Obviously there's someone spreading fake rumor. Rumor is just rumor.

No rumor, dude... all that was serious. We need to wait and see however. Still a long way to go before Hobbit opens and lots can happen. It could turn out like: Huayi claims their agreement with IMAX is not exclusive but somehow Hobbit IMAX still couldnot get released. Such circumstances could happen to any future IMAX release. You never know.

So you believe the whole Fans Frightened Huayi thing?

You probably would never see IMAX hobbit if what happened last few days didnt happen. And even after all this, it doesnot necessarily mean we will definitely see IMAX Hobbit. Not until there is an official press release about IMAX Hobbit from WB or China Film.

If the official reply from Huayi is ture, then that is rumor. We'll see.
