IMAX Expands Partnership In China With Five-Theatre Deal

This agreement follows the earlier eight-theatre cooperation and brings Omnijoi Cinemas' total IMAX commitment to 13 theatres, which includes a theatre currently open in the city of Suzhou and another that is slated to open in the city of Nanjing, Zhejiang Province in July. Today's deal brings the total number of IMAX theatres open or contracted to open in Greater China to 225, 92 of which are currently open.

China Box Office Reached 1 Billion

Overall box office revenue from the first 5 months of 2012 crossed the $1B mark, reaching about 6.6B yuan (or 1047M in US dollars), increased nearly 67% from the same period of last year. Foreign films account for about 65% market share, or 4.3B yuan, mostly taken by Hollywood releases, out of the 66B yuan. Admissions in first 5 months also see a big increase to roughly 180M. Meanwhile, by the end of May, film screen numbers reached about 11,000, 9,000 (81%) of which is digital projector packed, in more than 3,100 theaters.

Biggest grossed film in the first half year is FOX's Titanic 3D re-release with mighty $155M, followed by Paramount's Mission Impossible 4 with $107M and Disney's the Avengers ($87M).

Obviously, this June filled up with crap local films. With biggest Hollywood release, Prometheus, canceled by Sarft, June looks could not match last year.

My predicted top gross for major Hollywood releases:

The Hunger Games 200M yuan $31M

Madagascar 3 200M yuan $31M

The Pirates! Band of Misfits 80M yuan $12.7M

Mirror Mirror 80M yuan $12.5M

This Means War 60M yuan $10M

Athena 20M yuan $3.5M

Overall box office in June of 2011 increased more than 130%, even the second half of June was in the protection month of last summer.

If the growth of overall box office in June of 2012 could be negative, I won't be surprised.

Free competition is too far away for China's film market. :(

I say 100-125 mill

firedeep says 150, others 100, and you 100-125, so I can imagine where it will finish. I only can say :blink: . And I see I'd better get used to these numbers because they do nothing but rise
