Monsters University surges on Sunday thanks to a ton of sold out shows. Good for Despicable Me 2. Tales from the Dark 1 loses out on a 4-day admissions win over Despicable Me 2 due to weaker Sunday nights for horror films. Blind Detective has progressively gotten worse with each day this week. After yesterday's decrease, World War Z was bound to rise today. That along with Man of Steel's big decrease allowed for a swing of 1,500 admissions from Saturday in favor of World War Z.

Bluebomb, did it get the animated OW record because it's behind in admissions to TS3?

Yes, it did. It's official. Admissions were not reliable this week. Monsters University kept losing admissions in the middle of the day so I'd take this weekend's admissions with a big grain of salt.

Monsters University could hit the half-billion global mark by August after another strong overseas performance brought in an additional $30.8 million to its overseas total. The Pixar film has grossed a cume of $236.4 million from 45 territories, around 86% of the overseas market. The current global cume is $474.2 million. Monsters U opened this weekend in the United Kingdom to $5.3 million and in France to $3.7 million. Monsters University broke the box office record as the biggest animating opener of all time in Hong Kong and posted the sixth biggest opening weekend ever in the territory. Taiwan is showing similar success, making Monsters University the second biggest animation release of all time in the country with $6.5 million. The top overseas markets for Monsters University are Mexico ($36M), Russia ($20.3M), Australia ($19.2M), Japan ($18.8M), Argentina ($17.5M), Brazil ($15.4M), Spain ($11.5M), Germany ($11.2M). Monsters University opens in Iceland next weekend, Italy on August 21, and China on August 23.

No figure given but actuals should come out within the next few hours anyway. If it's the 6th biggest opening of all time, then it might have made 3.3m. Of course, I'm still not sure how the HK MPIA counted Kung Fu Hustle's opening weekend gross because that had sneak previews.

I voted MU with "Yes on OW, No on total" over TS3 in the poll earlier. Looks like that is the likely case, but I'm rooting for it to have the legs to surpass TS3, seems very unlikely but as long as it's over 10M, that is great.

Thanks for all the updates Bluebomb  :)

How do you lose admissions?

Usually at night after theaters are done for the day, they will empty their entire lineup so all admissions are gone from the server. The site sometimes does not catch this and admissions get lost.

But as for losing admissions in the day, I'm really not sure about that one.

July 11 Weekend Actuals

1. Monsters University - $3,275,215 [$25,410,000 HK] (opening weekend actual)
2. Despicable Me 2 - $2,527,625 ($566,000 2nd weekend; [-49%])
3. Tales from the Dark 1 - $480,777 (opening weekend actual)
4. Blind Detective - $1,483,578 ($345,000 2nd weekend; [-49%])
5. Man of Steel - $4,169,744 ($149,000 3rd weekend; [-83%])
6. World War Z - $5,310,462 ($148,000 4th weekend; [-67%])
7. Now You See Me - $3,464,690 ($64,000 5th weekend; [-61%])
8. Midsummer Formula - $641,895 ($33,000 3rd weekend; [-81%])

Liar Game Reborn - $5,026 (opening weekend actual)

Top 8 films: $5,060,000 (NEW July weekend record)

Everything was underestimated with the exceptions of Now You See Me and Midsummer Formula. This is the biggest July weekend on record. No other July weekend has taken in 5m total.

I checked and Monsters University loses to The Dark Knight Rises' OW ($25.48m HK) by less than $10,000. So since Monsters University has the 6th biggest opening weekend, it beats out Kung Fu Hustle's OW as well.

Now, this weekend, Pacific Rim is blasting its way through HK.

Not good at all. The 7 PM showtime moved a lot from yesterday but the day is still only 5% sold on 1 screen. Contrast that with Monsters University where it was about 40-50% full on opening day at this same time at this theater.

Great number for Monsters University. It's off only 18% from its red hot opening day. Despicable Me 2 holds magnificently. Tales from the Dark Part 1 saw a huge drop from opening day. It lost 40% of its Thursday admissions which indicates that it's extremely frontloaded. It will not reach 1m. Good for Blind Detective. Not bad for World War Z.

First off, a slight correction. Monsters University actually grossed more than what was reported. It made $3,324,339 ($25,789,538 HK), besting Toy Story 3's opening weekend ($25.7m HK). It also took care of Monsters Inc. in 4 days, brushing MI's $3,322,848 ($25,777,970 HK) total aside. In addition to those records being broken, it also scored the highest single day for an animated film with $1,022,197 ($7.93m HK [vs. 7.87m for Toy Story 3]) collected on Sunday.

Iron Man 3 Dominates Hong Kong Box Office in First Half of 2013

...
For the first six months of the year, the combined box office gross in Hong Kong was $98.65 (HK$765 million), a 1.43 percent increase over the same period in 2012. There were 153 movies released in theaters during this time, but only 19 of them were Chinese-language films.

Onto this week...there's a hotly contested battle going on at the top.

7/18 PRE-SALES: A couple of places have Pacific Rim out in front but the majority have Monsters University well ahead. It's scary to see how well Monsters University is doing. At some theaters, it is doing 4:1 or even 5:1 Pacific Rim sales. One theater even has Monsters University doubling Pacific Rim's entire sales for the day with just its morning show. (And Pacific Rim isn't even doing that badly at that theater.)
