The Smurfs (it's from Belgium) is a part of my youth, I like them, but this movie seems so bad...Happy to see it failing.

However I think the first one was ok :)

I grew up on it too. But the decision to change the movie to live action was a bad one.

Excellent for The Wolverine. It is assured of beating X-Men: First Class now and becoming the highest grossing X-Men feature film ever. 3.5m is a done deal.

In the battle for #2, The Smurfs 2 tried hard to pass Monsters University but Monsters stood its ground. Very good for Monsters University and nice rebound for The Smurfs 2 after that horrible Friday. We still need to see how Sunday unfolds before declaring who is #2 and #3. Right now though, The Smurfs 2 is still ahead due to a stronger Thursday and Friday.

SDU had the 2nd smallest increase of the top 10 but it is a very good hold. Looks like Pang Ho Cheung movies are review proof for now. It has a terrible rating but that is not stopping people from checking it out.

R.I.P.D. is also garnering negative attention from users hence the low increase today. Where Pang Ho Cheung gets a reprieve, this is more susceptible to negative reviews. It should start dropping heavily after this weekend.

Meanwhile, the lower increase for R.I.P.D. was good for Pacific Rim as it enjoyed a wonderful increase today. 4m will be no problem at all now.

Troubling hold for Despicable Me 2. On the surface, it is quite good but if you look deeper, its walk-ins have cooled considerably since Thursday. In fact, Doraemon has had more walk-ins than Despicable Me 2 the last 2 days. Besides that, it also was the only animation in the top 10 to not increase by at least 50%. This weaker hold, however, does not change the fact that it will gross over 4m.

The Rooftop had the lowest increase of the top 10 but that was to be expected given Jay Chou's rabid fanbase wanting to see this as early as possible. It will make over $100,000 this weekend.

Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum had a wicked Saturday. While Despicable Me 2 has seen its drops grow larger this weekend, Doraemon has done the opposite. $500,000 will happen now and it might even take down Doraemon: Nobita's New Great Adventure into the Underworld - The Seven Magic Users as the largest Doraemon picture in HK.

Secretly Greatly was boosted by strong reviews and had a very big increase today. It will beat Miracle in Cell No. 7's opening weekend and could make over $250,000 total.

Good for Monsters University. It won't break out from under The Smurfs 2 today but putting as much distance as it can will make a difference in final rankings this weekend. The Smurfs 2 increased nicely. Great for The Wolverine. Routine decrease for Pacific Rim. R.I.P.D. saw a big increase today because it had a very low increase with Saturday's pre-sales. SDU declined a lot. Today will be its largest drop of the weekend. Not good for Despicable Me 2. Doraemon has virtually caught up to it. Doraemon soared today. It might have its best hold today which is the most important since Sunday's are the time where it does its most business. The Rooftop did OK despite being only one of three to drop in pre-sales. Decent for Secretly Greatly.

August 1 Weekend Actuals

1. The Wolverine - $2,514,045 [$764,596 (-40.3%)]
2. The Smurfs 2 - $479,602 (opening weekend actual)
3. R.I.P.D. - $424,164 (including previews; opening weekend actual)
4. Monsters University - $9,312,281 ($72.23m HK) [$374,234 (-60.3%)]
5. Pacific Rim - $3,704,026 [$361,122 (-52.2%)]
6. SDU: Sex Duties Unit - $1,694,079 [$357,083 (-45.3%)]
7. Despicable Me 2 - $3,867,762 [$145,832 (-39.0%)]
8. Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum - $402,247 [$125,069 (-34.5%)]
9. The Rooftop - $113,454 (opening weekend actual)
10. Secretly Greatly - $86,380 (opening weekend actual)

Outside the top 10
Forbidden Super Hero - $103,140
Mood Indigo - $14,181 (opening weekend actual)

The Wolverine pushed hard on its 2nd weekend and came through with a spectacular hold. It will take down X-Men: First Class by next weekend.

The Smurfs 2 came up short this weekend, unable to grab its first #1 ranking here. This really disappointed in a summer full of animation hits. This should be able to get more than 1m here but 1.5m is a stretch.

R.I.P.D. was slightly below average but still managed to post a weekend over $400,000. This won't be crossing 1m.

Pacific Rim had a good hold, down 52%. 4m is upcoming next week.

Despite the horrible reviews, SDU had an outstanding hold. Although there was no local competition, it had to contend with widespread condemnation from users. There are 2 local movies coming out next week so it will have a hard time replicating this week's hold onto next week. 2m will be cleared.

Despicable Me 2 did not have the best hold this weekend but it still did relatively well. Although Saturday and Sunday fell harder than usual, this will leave with more than 4m.

Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum took everyone by surprise when it not only bucked the usual 60% decrease on its 2nd weekend for a Doraemon film but came through with the best hold of the top 10. This played to a wider base than most Doraemon films.

The Rooftop did not generate a lot of interest this weekend. Most was centered on The Wolverine and SDU. This might not make it to $250,000.

Secretly Greatly had a pretty good opening weekend and surpassed Miracle in Cell No. 7's opening weekend. There is still a lot of work to be done if it wants to make $250,000 but it has a really good head start with excellent WOM.

Now, on to Monsters University. The reason why I labelled it in red is because I think the total is wrong. There is no way that it did less than R.I.P.D. and barely edged Pacific Rim. It was already ahead of Pacific Rim by almost $13,000 on Thursday so the end result is Monsters University is ahead by $13,000 this weekend? R.I.P.D. was ahead of Monsters University on Thursday but Monsters University steamrolled R.I.P.D. on the weekend so it does not make any sense why it would lose to R.I.P.D. Most likely it was a typo and the correct total should be $9,441,207 ($73.23m HK), which would be $503,160 (-46.6%) for the weekend.

Fall begins with an interesting battle between Riddick and Red 2. Shield of Straw is looking to be this fall's leggiest foreign film. Before Midnight will be also be a film to watch given that its early special previews at Cityplaza and iSQUARE sold out within 1 hour. Growns Up 2 will be a major flop. The first one did really bad and it will have competition. It is being bookended by The Internship a week before and This is the End at the end of September.

The middle of September will feature the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday which is why studios and distributors are snapping up slots quickly. Sadako 2 is coming off a huge hit here with Sadako and it is widely expected to win that weekend. Call the September 26 weekend the weekend of the long delayed films. 3/4 movies on that list have been delayed by at least 1 month from the US release date. Elysium has the edge with IMAX but Runner Runner could pose a challenge.

The most interesting weekend of the fall season comes right at the beginning of October where 2 local releases go head to head. It will be Donnie Yen vs. Lau Ching Wan in the battle of superstars. But Gravity will be ahead of both of them due to IMAX and intense interest.

Winter begins with Ender's Game out and it should be a big event movie. Early marketing has fired off posters with HK's financial district being destroyed. Thor is unleashed the following week and then we've got The Hunger Games 2 two weeks later.

The Hobbit 2 will hope to reclaim the winter crown on December 12.

December 19 is going to be one of the most heavily looked at weekends of the remaining 4 months. 4/5 scheduled releases are family films and 3 of them belong to the animation category. Out of the whole lot, The Wind Rises is the most anticipated with it being Hayao Miyazaki's rumored final film. This will challenge as the biggest film of the winter. Hayao Miyazaki's last 3 films have made 2.5m or more. I expect it to make at least 5m. Something will have to move because The Wind Rises is surely going to be an event film this winter. The Monkey King has just been recently moved to December 19, however, it is unclear if that date will stick. If so, then I guess they are hoping for big HK star + holidays will = Journey to the West box office total.

One more family film will enter on Christmas Day. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 will hope to break 1m this winter. The first one was released on New Year's Eve and was a mild hit. Competition looks to be extremely fierce and until other animations gets out of the way on December 19, Cloudy 2 might not have a chance to get to 1m with this much competition scheduled.

Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon has been dated for 9/28 in the mainland, so that might be in the mix as well.
