Does anybody know how long a movie like star wars will stay in an Imax screen in HK?

It won't stay in IMAX much longer. Deadpool will grab all the screens on Feb. 11 but CNY comes before that and theaters will use their IMAX screens for the new openers. Star Wars 7 will stay in IMAX for 2 more weeks max. Whether it lasts another week in IMAX depends on its performance this week.

Monday-Wednesday admissions

The 5th Wave won in admissions on Monday but it lost to The Revenant on Tuesday. The Revenant has seen its daily admissions drops increase from -12% on Monday to -17% on Tuesday. This is an encouraging sign since this was when the awards effect started to take place last week. Meanwhile, The 5th Wave has been losing admissions against Ip Man 3 this week. Ip Man 3 was behind about 1,100 admissions on Monday but went under 1,000 on Tuesday. Both Ip Man 3 and The Revenant were the only 2 films of the top 5 to increase with Wednesday's pre-sales from Monday's pre-sales. Ip Man 3 has also seen its week-to-week holds decrease as the week progressed from 30% on Monday to 27% on Tuesday. Wednesday is expected to come in under 25% week-to-week.

There's no real frontrunner for the upcoming weekend. The Revenant has the edge in screens with a couple of theaters adding it this week to their lineup but any one of the openers or even Ip Man 3 could surprise and take #1 this weekend with admissions on the low side.

Deadpool has been moved to February 9 (2nd day of Chinese New Year) from February 11. The move is decent and this allows Deadpool to amass money in the CNY period but I question why it is opening on the 2nd day rather than the 1st day of CNY on Monday?

I have no idea what FOX is doing. They should go back to their original schedule with Deadpool out February 4 and Alvin out February 11, screw worldwide synchro.

Hope this move is throughout Asia not just in Hong Kong. China has officially killed it by not allowing its release.... so 4th Feb will be better throughout Asian region.. But 9th Feb is great too,MUCH better than 11feb. Mermaid will be in trouble, 1 day to earn before Fox moves in.

Chipmunks still on 4th Feb with the Good Dinosaur? not shifting? Good dinosaur will kill it....

Fox needs local analysts in Asia lol.

Mermaid won't be a big film in HK. It's geared toward the mainland audience.

The Good Dinosaur should be the bigger animation of the 2 but it won't do amazing business like Minions or Toy Story 3 or Monsters University. Alvin will survive just fine against Good Dinosaur.

10th is a Holiday in HK, but not in SG or Msia, so Deadpool might not be making that move here because it will only have 1 day holiday difference.

Would you say that 2016 is the most competitive Lunar New Year Box Office fight in Hong Kong? As in compare to 2015 Lunar New or 2015 Lunar New Year.

Nope. 2015 is much stronger. You had the new openers + Kingsman's 2nd weekend fighting for screens all week.

House of Wolves had the most walk-ins today and that booked its ticket to #1. It was close but Dirty Grandpa snuck past Revenant for #2 in admissions. Revenant and Ip Man 3 had decent holds. Terrible hold for The 5th Wave. Weak for The Big Short.

TigerPaw, to expand on my above comment, 2016 does not look all that strong except for 3-4 openers. I don't believe in either Mermaid or The Monkey King and the holdovers look drab. That should mean bigger grosses for Deadpool, Good Dinosaur, Alvin and the Chipmunks and From Vegas to Macau.

Huge race up top with 3 films in the running for #1 this weekend. Dirty Grandpa led all releases despite a 1,000 admissions deficit from House of Wolves. House of Wolves was not far behind but will be the 3rd place grosser barring a miraculous jump this weekend with frontloading expected to occur. The Revenant finished in 3rd place on Thursday but will be in the hunt for a 2nd week at #1. Where it finishes this weekend will depend if it experiences another weekend surge like last weekend. Ip Man 3 had a pretty good hold. It will pass 7m on Friday and is looking at a 7.5m finish, just a few hundred thousand behind Kung Fu Hustle for #1 local film all time. The Big Short disappointed slightly but with Oscar nominations in hand, this could see a big increase this weekend. The 5th Wave crumbled on its 2nd weekend. The terrible word of mouth accelerated its decline and this could be looking at less than a 2 multiplier when its run is done. Ten Years keeps on impressing and will pass $500,000 on Friday and will make back its production budget of $600,000 by Wednesday at the latest. Anniversary had a weaker decline with no gimmicks to trot out this week. It will clear 2.5m by the end of next week.

Surprising that Star Wars 7 did not even make the top 10 in gross even with it ranking #8 in admissions.

Another close finish although Dirty Grandpa led at the start of the evening on Friday unlike Thursday where it just nipped Revenant at the end of Thursday. House of Wolves is really frontloaded while The Big Short is gaining some traction. Decent hold for Ip Man 3.

If RT scores is any indication of WOM, then Dirty Grandpa is even worse than 5th Wave. Rotten Tomatoes scores are mostly stable now, and they are highly co-related to Word of Mouth in most cases(With the exception of artistic or award winning films which may not have commercial value). So if this is the case, its legs won't be strong.... It will crumple worse than 5th Wave, reviews are saying it is the WORST De Niro movie..

BTW Ip Man 3 rotten tomatoes rating is also out, because it is premiering in 90 theaters in US, and its at a solid 83% which is higher than Revenant's 82%. The only thing stopping it from exploding in North America is the weather, where 30 of its 90 theaters actually closed due to the Snow Storm and people are hiding in their house and unwilling to travel(due to limited theaters) to watch it.

Anyway, something fun for you:

Haha, seems like Donnie is going to break out into Hollywood even before Rogue One or CTHD2, and regardless of Ip Man 3's North America box office results, because he has been appearing on a lot of talk shows, including Extra, Access Hollywood, Hollywood Today etc. (The Hype and Publicity is much more than The Grandmaster in 2013)

Fingers crossed that he is the next representative of Asia and Hong Kong, he speaks excellent english and has worked hard over 30 years and definitely deserves to get out of the shadow of Jackie Chan and Jet li.

Dirty Grandpa is enjoying very good word of mouth in HK. In fact, it is the highest rated movie of the week along with The Big Short and tied for the highest rated movie of the winter so far. It should play extremely well next week.

So Ip Man 3's score went up which is very good to see. Donnie Yen seems like a humble guy. I wish him all the success in the world. He deserves to be known for more than just his fighting/martial arts.

Very cold weather is affecting ticket sales. With Sunday and Monday expected to be the coldest days in a long time, admissions will suffer and that will put holdovers in jeopardy when it comes time to schedule Monday night/Tuesday morning. There will be some leeway at the top but the ones in the middle such as Ip Man 3 and The Big Short might be the most affected.

5 Ip Man 3 $215,000 -44.6% $7,145,000
Well, it was a close weekend but I don't think anyone expected Dirty Grandpa of all movies to come out on top. Dirty Grandpa is riding very good word of mouth with a strong 4.4/5 rating from users. It is tops along with The Big Short among new releases for highest reviewed movie this week. The Revenant had a pretty good hold. The increasingly larger drops this weekend are a slight cause of concern but for now, it is doing well. It will bank around 2m by Sunday and with Oscars likely upcoming, this will see an upswing next month provided that it still plays well enough to get past the Chinese New Year massacre. House of Wolves is the first real local comedy for HK moviegoers in a while and the empty marketplace along with starpower from Francis Ng and Ronald Cheng took it to #3. The Big Short was a slight disappointment this weekend as The Revenant stole the spotlight from it despite its own Oscar nominations and strong performances from the cast. Although The Big Short is playing extremely well in the financial district, more people were interested in seeing Leo or leaned toward a comedy this weekend almost everywhere else. Ip Man 3 rounds out the top 5 with a decent hold but its chances of passing Kung Fu Hustle or Shaolin Soccer look extremely grim. It will need a Hail Mary recovery the next 2 days to have any chance of sniffing Shaolin Soccer's gross.

Rough day for most films on Sunday. It looks like only Ten Years, Ip Man 3 and maybe House of Wolves are looking at an increase from Saturday. As temperatures dip to its lowest levels in ages, this will be an extremely tough and slow couple of days for almost all films.

At 6 PM on Sunday, these are the daily drops so far from Saturday's final admissions for the top 5

The Revenant: -27.4%
Dirty Grandpa: -26.3%
House of Wolves: -17.7%
The Big Short: -24.3%
Ip Man 3: -13.6%

Obviously, the cold weather is putting a huge damper on admissions as all of these holds should be 10% better at this point in time than what they are now.

All films dropped from their Sunday pre-sales daily holds unlike last week where 2 films had better holds with final numbers vs. pre-sales. Only Ten Years posted a better Sunday daily hold this week than last week out of all holdovers. 6 films dropped 17% from Saturday on Sunday vs. 2 last Sunday. The cold is to blame for all this mess. We should see admissions recover on Tuesday/Wednesday to normal levels.

So where is Ip Man 3's final total headed to?  Is it going to pass Shaolin Soccer?

No don't think so. It will finish with around 58m HK. All holdovers including Ip Man 3 were lucky this week did not have any solid new openers. Ip Man 3 will see more showtimes this week than last week because more than 10 theaters are adding Ip Man 3 back into their schedule or adding more showtimes on Thursday.

Good hold for Revenant. Dirty Grandpa had a nice opening. I believe that it was #1 this weekend over Revenant. Ip Man 3 had an OK hold but beating Shaolin Soccer or Kung Fu Hustle does not seem likely anymore. Not a bad debut for House of Wolves. Awful for The 5th Wave.
