Then again Lions for Lambs, Knight and Day, and Rock of Ages probably wouldn't have done well even without Cruise's bad PR. But Valkyrie, Jack Reacher, and Oblivion would've benefitted from not having that, I think.

Seems like the big Spring Breakers expansion wasn't really worth it.

Still an indie success.

For a movie that cost 3m, it was worth it.

The movie made more than all previous Harmony Korine movies combined.

TC is past his prime because he`s 50, everyone knows he`s 50 despite Peter Panish good looks, and yet he still plays characters who are obviously far younger than his age. That won`t endear him to his fans who grew just as old and new generations don`t care anyway because they have their own idols.

The Tom Cruise sci-fi epic "Oblivion" took in $13.2 million Friday and will easily capture the weekend box office crown.

Universal's futuristic adventure, directed by Joseph Kosinski ("Tron Legacy") and co-starring Morgan Freeman, is outpacing analysts' projections and is on pace for a three-day total of $38 million.

It's a solid debut for Cruise, too. The opening number is better than that of his two films from last year – "Rock of Ages" and "Jack Reacher" – combined. And it is his best since 2006's "Mission Impossible 3," which took in $47 million in its first three days.

Easily topping the Friday box office, Tom Cruise's Oblivion is now expected to clear a better-than-expected $38.5 million for the weekend.

That would mark one of Cruise's better openings in North America, although moviegoers only gave the movie a B- CinemaScore. Overseas, he has remained a much bigger star. Opening last weekend in numerous foreign markets, Oblivion has already earned nearly $100 million internationally.

adult male moviegoers are fueling Oblivion, which cost Universal and Elliot Inc. at least $120 million to produce.

Cruise's track record domestically has been mixed. Jack Reacher debuted to $15.2 million in December on its way to earning a so-so $80 million in North America. Conversely, Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol, opening to $29.6 million in December 2011, turned into a box-office monster, grossing nearly $700 million worldwide.

Sci-fi is a familiar genre for Cruise, who starred in War of the Worlds and Minority Report, both directed by Steven Spielberg.

Set in 2077, 60 years after Earth has been destroyed by aliens, Oblivion follows one of the last humans stationed on the planet as he uncovers a troubling secret. Kosinski's script is adapted from his graphic novel.

Universal decided to get a jump on the beginning of the crowded summer box office by openingOblivion now. The studio has gone aggressively after males by advertising during major sporting events including the NCAA's March Madness.
