  4. Think this is just a case of the official estimated holds being too high for Fast Six and that there's really nothing "wrong" with the Sunday hold if it plays out that way. Expecting the combined SUN/MON hold of Fast Six to be significantly stronger than the SUN/MON Memorial Day weekend hold of Fast Five (in its fifth weekend of release no less) seemed like a stretch to me. Also, BOM's daily # for Sunday was technically off from what Universal was estimating, because Universal bumped Friday up to $38.7 million, so their Sunday estimate was $28.3 million. For comparison, Fast Five in its fifth weekend pulled a SUN+MON / SAT ratio of 1.49 to 1. Universal's Sunday morning breakdown for Fast Six would place the ratio at 1.65 to 1.
  5. Don't know if these have been posted already, but here are this morning's reported daily grosses for Fast Six from Universal: Friday -- $38.7 mSaturday -- $31.5 mSunday -- $28.3 m est (-10%)Monday -- $23.7 m est (-16%)
  6. I haven't seen the daily breakdowns yet, so still a bit wait and see, but that $23.6M Monday estimate seems high at the very least.

  9. 8.5 / B+ for me, which actually makes it my favorite Star Trek film (just over First Contact and ST09). I haven't been the biggest fan of Star Trek movies in general, but am a much bigger ST TV fan, especially The Next Generation and the original series (though it has been a while now since I've really re-watched much from either series). More than anything, I felt like I was watching a ST TV episode (heh, with a very big budget) instead of a ST movie. Areas like the pacing, overall tone and feel, character interactions. And that worked for me. I also dig the alternate universe route more than something along the lines of a more traditional remake or reboot.

  11. I tend to think Disney is under-estimating Sunday a bit, but one thing to remember is that it's Cinco De Mayo today, which could limit grosses slightly (relatively speaking obviously). Last year Cinco De Mayo fell on Saturday for The Avengers. Way back in 2002 when the calendar lined up the same way, Spider-Man 1 fell 27 percent on Sunday, so Disney may be looking heavily at that this morning.

  20. Finally caught up with this today. Liked it a bit more than I was expecting going in. A number of very memorable (and sometimes very touching) moments (poor China Girl) throughout and thought Michelle Williams was especially good (pun intended I guess). For the most part I also think it captures the spirit of Oz. But, you can also throw me into the choir of those who weren't impressed by Mila Kunis at all. Not wicked, simply bad. Singling out a single performer negatively in a film is actually a pet peeve of mine, but in this case, umm yeah... Tone-wise, I also would have liked if the film felt a little more 1939 and a little less 2013, but I also realize that may be asking too much of a film of this size. B+ / 8.5

  23. The Monday after Easter is historically a very good day for family films. The Tuesday after Easter (today), family films tend to come back down to Earth a bit, while non-family fare holds up better. Pretty sure what happens is a lot of schools get Monday off, then some start back up on Tuesday, but the ones that don't tend to get the whole week off (as the drop-off for family films tends to only happen on Tuesday after Easter, not Wednesday and Thursday).
