  2. A quick heads up that Disney's actuals for the past two days will be appearing on the website shortly.
  3. Some food for thought... Granted, Spider-Man 2 didn't have Independence Day fall on its second day or 3D grosses, but The Amazing Spider-Man only trails it by 8 percent after two days. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I think there's anyway in the world it could maintain anything close to the same type of pace going forward. But when it comes to midweek openers in general, I think it's best to wait at least until Friday's gross is in before trying to pin down exactly where a film is headed long-term, as things can still change a lot (good or bad) in these cases once the weekend hits. Independence Day not behaving like it did back in 2007 only adds to the uncertainty at this point IMO.
  4. Unless they revised in the last half hour or so, $23.4 million is the number Sony sent out earlier today. Also, they are now including $850,000 from the pre-midnight Canada shows on the opening day figure to revise it upwards to $35.85 million.
  5. A quick heads up that because of the holiday, many/most of the numbers the studios report today will technically be estimates instead of exact actuals.
  6. Don't know if this is the right place for non Spider-Man Tuesday discussion or not, but studio estimates for Tuesday are in for Ted and Magic Mike.Ted: $8.40 m (-4%)Magic Mike: $5.45 m (+9%)Because of the holiday, many/most of the numbers the studios report today will be estimates instead of exact actuals.

  8. Not trying to take anything away from Magic Mike's midnight performance at all, but I am personally much more surprised by the Ted #. Regardless of what happens the rest of today, would expect Ted to hold up at least somewhat better than Magic Mike on Sat and Sun just from the demos and walk-up business.

  10. The last two Wednesdays were clearly inflated from being in between Tue and Thu NBA Finals games. I would expect non-holiday Wednesday drop-offs to return to the usual 2012 standards now.In turn, would also expect holds to be better in general today than they were the last two Thursdays. Balance to the force.

  14. One of the things that left the greatest impression on me is the engineers view of humans being a mirror into humanity’s mass view of androids and xenomorphs (especially if mankind plays a larger role in the creation/evolution of xenomorphs later on). The creator growing tired/afraid of its creation, in part because the creation (at least in some ways) becomes as great/strong as or greater/stronger than its creator. However, I do wish this had been a bit more developed than it ultimately was within the script, but I do feel that it is a key theme that is meant to be there.Overall, I just really dug this. The first half of Alien has always been my favorite part of the series by far, so maybe I’m just biased going in, but I absolutely loved the look and feel of the film (would recommend it on these aspects alone), I found it incredibly eerie throughout (which doesn’t happen to me much anymore) and I love that it isn’t trying to explain every little detail in a nice little package with a bow on top (whether it's intentional or lazy screenwriting is up to each individual viewer I guess). Major props to Fassbender and Rapace. Will likely be the first film I re-watch in theatres this year and can’t wait for a sequel. My two cents.A- (9.0/10)
  15. I don't have time to post the grosses, but go back and check how the daily holds for Hangover 1 and Get Him to the Greek compare to other films in the marketplace during June 9 - June 11, 2009 and June 8 - June 10, 2010.
  16. For certain films, usually older male skewing ones, the NBA Finals have hurt the Tuesday and Thursday grosses and helped the Wednesday gross in between (when there's no game). It's not so much that so many people are watching an NBA Finals game, but for that targeted audience they have no game one day in between two days of games. The first week Tue-Wed-Thu holds of The Hangover and Get Him to the Greek were examples of this.
  17. In all likelihood, Prometheus is getting hit from the NBA Finals harder than other films (as well as game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Saturday). Now if it has a relatively bad hold today in between Finals games, then it may be time to panic a bit.
