  1. It's cool that Asia, at least, is delivering and seems to appreciate the sheer spectacle. I wonder why it's decreasing everywhere else it seems.
  2. Good points all around. Of course it's going to be frontloaded to an extent, but I'm guessing the great exits in the US might extend to some overseas markets. Then again, WB is footing only 25% of the bill, so that is certainly helping giving us this Monsterverse with Legendary. I just hope it at least gets to 400M + and Godzilla Vs Kong blows up. But once again, another sequel in a franchise that decreases from the first or previous entry, it's happened quite a lot, and really, I'm thinking only Disney are immune to this (although TLJ decreased a lot, as expected)? The film is superior to Godzilla, and the logical part of me is puzzled that it would decrease, I guess the added spectacle is not enough, who the fuck knows what audiences want really? Lots of folks complain about Godzilla not showing him enough, not having enough spectacle, then KOTM delivers on this, and significant decrease. Um.
  3. Wat? Ready Player One opened at 181M and went all the way to 582M. I know Dark Phoenix is coming and Aladdin is competition too, but how in the hell wouldn't it reach 450-500M at the very least? Anyway, Europe disappointing, but China did well, so did Japan, hopefully it can hold well despite opening low in other markets. It's clear though that there is a cap to Kaiju films, even Kong ended at 580M+. I'm thinking maybe that Godzilla Vs Kong could perhaps get people even more excited and push to 600M+.
  4. Someone on the OS thread for KOTM says it's doing great in Japan, 9M+ opening weekend? Two people talking about that actually: Sunny Max:"3 Days OW Looking To $9 M+ Debut in Japan ... Excellent Start ... 3rd Best Western Film Start Of 2019 Year .." Cookson: 'KotM is killing it in Japan again on Sunday.. even after discount day. Could be looking at 40m+ there!'
  5. "Disaster", jesus, hyperbole much? Godzilla opened with 196M, this will open probably lower but still in the 160-170M range, it's not a disaster (and yes, I know it's making way more in China, but it's offset by the decrease domestically) at all. It's really puzzling that the film dropped in several significant markets, how can you explain that? I don't think you can except that Godzilla left a bad taste in some people's mouths? And that film was excellent. I thought the trailers had done the job, they are superb, Deadline's point about us having seen big monsters fighting already with Pacific Rim is DUMB as hell, there's nothing to it but there might be a cap as to how high the Monsterverse can go as we see Godzilla and Kong: SI both between 500 and 600M. The film is a pure crowdpleaser, it's superior to Zilla 14 and hell, look at the exits in the U.S, 4,5/5 from PostTrak audiences, 75% definite recommend and yet the film drops on Saturday, what the hell? It's awesome that the film is doing great in Japan and it'll probably end up between 500 and 600M in the end but this feels a bit like the Crimes Of Grindelwald drop from Fantastic Beasts, especially domestically. @Justin4125 Great post, agreed completely. It's a bummer because Edwards' approach worked, it's great, it just frustrated some folks. I'm glad that Godzilla Vs Kong is already shooting, so we got that one for sure and then hopefully more to come. The good thing though that WB also paid for 25% of the budget, this being a co-production with Legendary definitely helps if the Monsterverse has trouble going beyond 600M.
  6. It will do well but if it does less than Godzilla, it makes zero sense. It should have better WOM and legs for sure.
  7. Unless you believe the "Disney says no more Avengers films" thingy that was said very recently. Unless they just mean no more OG Avengers films, and just Young Avengers or New Avengers, etc.
  8. First, you can tone it down a little bit, two, I'm not seeing just what I wanna see, this was all over the place on Twitter, on Reddit, there's always been an Avatar backlash which is only natural and amplified with something massively successful, but it's definitely intensified with Endgame coming along. Endless and tiring, I follow many folks from the industry on Twitter and several of them had to defend Avatar when the timelines were just filled with hateful comments. There has been nothing of the sort from Cameron fanboys, and we're certainly much quieter than MCU fans. Hell, anything you see here on BOT, on the Avatar 2 thread is softcore, it's harmless stuff, there's very little aggressivity going on but that's also about how toxic fandom can be these days, there are always a couple of nutjobs and clowns who end up giving everyone a bad name. P.S: Nice stealth editing 😉
  9. I will defend Avatar any time of the day, yes, different factors but STILL, a lot of people purposefully dismiss Avatar's run as if it's no big deal when its legs were insane, absolutely insane. It's also amusing, let's be honest, that so many people have been trashing Avatar (and by extension, its fans) when Endgame made 1.2 billion and proclaimed it would either pass Avatar or do so easily, I remember that negative James Cameron hashtag on Twitter adopted by folks whose sole goal was to see Endgame destroy Avatar and show James Cameron ! "We'll show him !". I love both films, both runs are super impressive, Avatar's even moreso imo. I remember seeing the film day one, practically no one in the room, the weekend was completely packed, and so it kept going for weeks.
  10. No matter what Endgame made, Avatar's run will always be far more impressive (and I LOVE both films, Avatar has the edge though), it opened at 241M WW, 241 MILLION ONLY ! And it managed to make its way to 2.75 billion + (without rerelease). Endgame opened at 1.2 BILLION ! and will either fall short of Avatar or barely pass it. I mean, this is crazy.
  11. I've found many underseen and underrated films that got below 50 something on RT, the whole system is broken, read what Scorsese has to say about RT and he's just spot on.
  12. Godzilla 2014 holds up so well, a real sense of awe, a mood, an atmosphere, Edwards killed it, the flatness of some of the main characters isn't enough to derail the rest of the film, it's just a film that works with a real vision. KoTM should be that times 100 and what looks to be a more intriguing and cool story. That said, Godzilla 14 was imo the perfect introduction, we wouldn't be here without Gareth.
  13. Cameron had to approve every bit of casting, so if Gabriel Luna was cast, there's probably a reason. He's no Robert Patrick but I'm sure he'll deliver.
  14. Got complete faith in this with Kosinski at the helm, and the cast is amazing. Seriously, anyone who hasn't seen Only The Brave (not many people did alas), get on it right away.
  15. Just to give you an idea, a YT 1080p trailer is like 20-30 mb, a Pro Res trailer (that's still compressed) is 2.5- 3 gb.
  16. Dude, I didn't make a whole speech about not judging CGI off of Youtube videos for someone to use screencaps off a Youtube video to demonstrate that the VFX work during the T'Challa, Killmonger looks wonky. I remember thinking seeing it in IMAX and at home (on a 90 inch + screen, videoprojection) that it looks fine, it's not as polished as some of the rest sure.
  17. I love Sam in Salvation though and I remember a lot of reviews and folks mentioning him as a standout at the time. P.S: Even better quality version available here: https://tinyurl.com/y2xp9wdo
  18. I see what you're saying about Luna, we'll see but probably voluntary. Watching the video above from Collider, watch it when Frosty shows up, around 9 min, he explains super well how great the CinemaCon footage was when they got a look at longer scenes (obviously), and that it felt very much like something that followed T2. The teaser trailer is to sell it to the masses, I'm looking forward to the more story driven second one.
  19. Looks pretty darn cool so far, teaser trailer as said, Mackenzie looks fantastic, as she always is (seriously, anyone who hasn't seen Halt & Catch Fire, do yourselves a favor, one of the best shows around, Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy, Mackenzie Davis, Kerry Bishé, Toby Huss are amazing, the first season is a tougher watch for some, it really soared in season 2), the action looks darn cool. I wish it had more grit visually (SHOOT ON FILM FOLKS), but the mood, the locales, Arnold, Linda, Mackenzie, a dope new Terminator. I also love how the way the Terminator and Mac move, especially her, feels like a dance almost, very fluid.
  20. Okay, instead of taking shitty screencaps from a horrendous source (YT 1080p), watch the trailer here: http://www.hd-trailers.net/movie/terminator-dark-fate/ Apple Trailers, QT 1080p (that you can download on the link above), MUCH higher quality, much less compression than Youtube, it's embarrassing that studios debut trailers for their films on Youtube, I get why but it's disgusting to think that most people will see it this way and will be judging visuals off of that. Judging CGI work off of Youtube is a fool's errand, the compression is so crazy that it destroys the texture of the image and the VFX work. Gabriel Luna's CG double is still too CGIey for now, but I'm sure it's still being worked on. Other shots that looked iffy on Youtube (because, duh, Youtube) no longer look that way in higher quality on Apple Trailers. Seriously guys, do yourselves a favor next time, for any film, look for the trailer on Apple Trailers. Or you can sometimes find them with an even higher bitrate on thedigitaltheater, sometimes, if you're lucky, ProRes quality trailers can be found online (2.5 to 3 gb per trailer, Youtube in comparison is 20-30 mb in 1080p).
  21. I'd like to think general audiences are aware of the difference between "produced by" and "directed by" but you never know. I still think Alita would have made a lot more money if James had directed it.
  22. What's the big deal here? The film is doing very well, or had a lot of people gone with completely ludicrous, aka 1 billion + predictions after the first trailer came out or something?
  23. I LOVE Endgame (and worship Avatar) but indeed, it's crazy, shows you how insane Avatar is .
  24. Gosh, that first scene, they seem to have nailed it, very close to the book, as close as it gets. Really love what we see next, this seems like this might actually stick quite close to the book.
