  1. Hey, that's a Filipino movie! Our #2 for the year behind Iron Man 3 Lots of Filipinos in that area for sure
  2. I loved MI but Shrek deserved that Oscar, too bad the last 2 installments were not as good as the first two. And another open competition again this year, pretty exciting! A foreign title could sneak in if there's someone that will push it hard or overflowing critical reviews. MU is a lock nominee, I read reviews praising the lighting and other technical aspects so this will definitely be supported by the technical group. And while not as critically acclaimed as other Pixar films the reception is still good. I think The Croods deserves a nomination too. Maybe DM2 will sneak in as well since the box office is too huge to ignore and it got a decent reception. I agree if Frozen will have similar reception and box office to Tangled and WIR it could be the frontrunner
  3. The lion share of the box office still comes from Metro Manila as the provincial theaters are not as many and don't make as much (and they have lower ticket prices as well) so there's really a lot of room to grow for the country. Well Hollywood movies that is because certain local movies explode because they do well on provinces just see It Takes a Man and a Woman, it made that huge amount of money despite lower ticket prices (and no 3D premium) compared to Hollywood movies because of strong performances in the provinces
  4. Is Life of Pi still in theaters or is it finally done? What a great run Will OHF join Gnomeo and Juliet in the $99 million club soon?
  5. Yeah The Heat Yeah expected big drop for MU but still solid And OHF is so close with $99 mil
  6. The Heat is doing so well Happy for Melissa and Sandra!
  7. Before Midnight was scheduled to open here last July 3 but was moved to July 10 which is a very good decision since it's so competitive in the PH box office right now. Apart from DM2, MU, White House Down, World War Z and a local family movie are doing good as well. All movies had sell out at the theater I went to yesterday. Poor Bling Ring though, they were marketing it heavily on Emma Watson but it's not doing well and is now sharing screens even if it only opened last July 3. I wanted to see it but the missed the screening time I wanted to get to because of the lines in the ticket booth
  8. I'm going to rank the 4 animated movies I've seen this year: 1. The Croods 2. Monsters University 3. Despicable Me 2 4. Epic - Epic has the more developed story than DM2 but well the minions gags were just too fun so it edges out Epic. I like MU a lot but I'm a sucker for a good family-centric story so The Croods wins
  9. At first I thought The Minions movie is a silly idea but given how beloved they are by the audience (and for me they are the ones that kept DM2 from being a total dud) I now think it could really work. I was at the local theater yesterday and boy the lines were long. DM2 is a big part of that as it is behaving like a superhero/HP/Twilight movie here but it does not have the lion share of screens (90%+) like those movies so it won't open on the same level of those movies but it's still going to be huge. Animated flicks from Disney-Pixar/Dreamworks do well here but not really huge numbers (over 100 million pesos in gross) and the last really big animation movie here was Toy Story 3. Ice Age movies are solid box office performers as well but not long-lines-in -the-theater popular. I remember watching DM1 in half empty theater back then and The Lorax flopped here. The popularity of the minions is just so impressive, they even have features on local news! I never thought that they would be this BIG here in the Philippines.
  10. I was at the mall yesterday and long lines at the cinemas! DM2 is just like a superhero movie with all those long lines. If this had like 90% share of screens like the past superhero and twilight movies it would compete with their OW numbers. Anyway, there were sellouts too for Monsters University, 4 Sisters and a Wedding, White House Down and World War Z. The Heat and Bling Ring is just sharing a screen and they could not fill up half of the seats. Wanted to watch Bling Ring but the lines were too long and it won't be possible to make it to the screentime we wanted. The other local movie My Lady Boss has one screen for itself but no sellouts either. I feel like if there were more prints available (or contracts for those movies) I bet that theater would pull those movies out to add another one for DM2
  11. Agree! I didn't see this one in 3D but it felt like a good movie to watched in 3D
  12. Yes, the turnover of movies here is pretty fast. The most weeks a blockbuster can stay on a lot of theaters is 4 weeks so you don't usually see exceptional legs. Most movies make most of their gross on their first week

  17. “MONSTERS UNIVERSITY” GETS TOP HONORS, GROSSES P58.22-M IN 5 DAYS via press release MANILA, July 01, 2013 – Disney/Pixar’s comedy adventure “Monsters University” graduated at the top of Philippine box-office with honors as it amassed a sensational P58.22-million nationwide gross for its five-day opening weekend June 26-30. This was announced today by Victor R. Cabrera, managing director of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Philippines. “Monsters University’s” opening now represents the most successful launch for a Pixar title, outpacing the old record of 2010’s “Toy Story 3” at P55.6-million. Industry-wide, it nabbed the second biggest opening ever for an animated title, as well as the fifth highest bow ever for a Disney film – animated or live-action. In the U.S., the prequel to the 2001 blockbuster “Monsters, Inc.” was No. 1 for the second consecutive weekend, reaching a stellar $171 million through Sunday. The movie has so far earned just north of $300 million worldwide, including nearly $130 million from 37 overseas territories. Back in the Philippines, “Monsters U” rolled out in 132 screens, posting its largest receipts from SM North EDSA with P2.71-M, followed by SM Mall of Asia with P2.46-M and Trinoma at P2.38-M. 18. ^ Yes. I like it but I was disappointed with the third act. I read how the original 3rd act should have been and it's better storywise but it would have been a box office killer because it's so dark. But overall it's a good movie and very thrilling especially the zombies attack
  19. I'm really curious what OHF's final gross will be. It's so close to $99 mil but so far to $100 mil. And yay for MU and TH!
