  1. Closer to 350M actually....3D didn't play a large role with this film. I think only 40% of the gross came from 3D, which is like 30% of the tickets...and that was on OW when 3D:2D ration is the highest. I'll always wonder about Potter's 400M potential if it was one 3hour+ film though....
  2. Quality has very little to do with performance when it comes to Potter. Afterall PoA and DH1 are the two lowest performers in the series. But anyways, COS, was the sequel to SS, a film that sold more tickets than THG and FotR....it was also more kid friendly and came out when Potter was still new and fresh in Hollywood. DH2 was the sequal to film that sold only 37M tickets and was the 8th film in the series. It took a nice increase over Part 1, so I can't really complain about its performance.
  3. 1. Sorcerer’s Stone: 55.9M2. Chamber of Secrets: 44.6M3. Prisoner of Azkaban: 40.3M4. Goblet of Fire: 44.9M5. Order of the Phoenix: 42.4M6. Half-Blood Prince: 40.37. Deathly Hallows Part 1: 37.4M8. Deathly Hallows Part 2: 42.6MLooking at the ticket sales of each Harry Potter film, it is evident that each instalment was a huge success that pulled in a large sum of cash. Still, I've never fully understood why DH Part 1 failed to reach 300M. After 6 films, EVERY SINGLE HP FILM had sold ATLEAST 40 million tickets or more...and this one failed to reach that mark...not by a few hundred thousand tickets either...by more than 2.5M! It's opening day was only marginally larger than HBP's od and within 5 days was already trailing the 6th installment by more than 14M (144 vs 159). It is considered by many Potter fans to be one of the finest films in the series, which led many people to think that it would have somewhat decent legs (helped by Thanksgiving and Christmas), but it only managed a 2.36x.Each new instalment released after GOF saw modest drops in DOM ticket sales, but DH1 was certainly steeper than the drops we saw with OotP and HBP...in fact it was the largest drop since COS! Looking back, I feel like DH1 should have easily sold 40M tickets. The series had proven time and time again that 40M+ tickets was assured, and the holidays combined with a general lack of competition should have helped the film go beyond that, which was the case with COS and GOF.So what happened? Was it just a bad market? The fact that it was a sequel to two mediocere Potter films? The fact that it was only half a film? Or was it simply Potter fatigue like we've never seen before? I think it's a combination of all 4....So what do you guys think? Did Part 1 underperform?
  4. I watched about 5min and wasn't too impressed. All i remember was that gollum looked like a brown blob....
  5. Well when Spiderman 3 came out I said that the record was going to stay for ATLEAST4 years....I was wrong....although if it wasn't for one tiny film, TDK, I would have been right. I'm going to make another bold prediction though and say TA will hold onto the OW record for ATLEAST 4 years. It's OW attendance is record-breaking (or at least near record breaking) and 3D inflated it like crazy. Even if i am wrong, I'm almost positive it will stay within the top 3 for half a decade, or longer....So i see the record falling sometime in 2015/2016, with a film opening to like 230M...then maybe a film topping that record in 2017 or 2018 with a near 250M OW? It'll be a long time from now, that's for sure....and it'll very likely be a 3D film.
  6. This is starring Emma Watson and the story is based on a novel by the same name. I wasn't really looking forward to this before but the trailer has certainly caught my attention. It looks really good....
  7. Titanic. I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this movie.I probably watched the film once a week for about 2 years back in the late 90's. I also really liked The Prince of Egypt....
  8. Ok, fair enough. And sorry I insulted you. I just get a little defensive about Potter....i didn't realize how rude i came across until i reread my post. And Noctis, I include curious moviegoers in my definition of "general audience", and there's very few of those when it comes to potter...with the exception of the first film of course.
  9. When did i go on a rant about how emotional and poignant the harry potter films were? I said they weren't exceptionally noteworthy and admitted the quality of DH2 was on par with TA. And I don't think mentioning important stats about Potter makes my post meaningless. Who cares if the series was on a downward trend. You guys think TA 8 would end up making 1.3b ww? No it wouldn't, because the quality of the films would decline, and the only people who would give a shit about the sequals would be die hard super hero fans. HBP made 300M dom and that was coming off just the hp fanbase....not general audiences. Take away TA's general audience and i'm sure its core fanbase wouldn't have been able to get the film past 200M.Also, Jessie, in the USA TDK adjusts to 590M. TA might be able to match it but I think we all know which film sold more tickets. WW they'll be about even....
  10. So you think hp will be forgotten about within a few years and that its success wasn't deserved? If it was one film, I could see your point, but it's not; the harry potter series has made nearly 8b worldwide and it is the most successful film franchise in history. That is a HUUGE box office accomplishment. Even ten years after the original came out the last film managed to make over 1.3b worldwide. The quality of these films aren't exceptionally noteworthy but neither is the avengers....it's simply another superhero movie, like spiderman and iron man were. It's much more forgettable than the dark knight and will sell far less tickets than that film.Harry Potter is the most successful book series of all time and the most successful movie series of all time. The avengers is just another superhero movie. But DH2 and the TA are about equal in overall quality and bo success if we just compare the two films.....both are in the 90's on RT and both will have a ww bo total of about 1.3 - 1.4b.....
  11. The Reader, The Lovely Bones, DH1...to name a few.
  12. People will remember it, and a lot of future blockbusters will be compared to it, but it won't really be remembered as a great film. It will be remembered as crowd pleaser that caught fire at the time and made way more money than it should of....kind of like shrek 2. That's all I'm saying....
  13. Wtf, how is TA winning? It's a decent crowd pleaser but come on! A few years from now nobody will remember this film...it's run is reminding me a lot of Shrek 2. It's going to make nearly as much as titanic in the USA....so undeserving.
  14. 1. Return of the King2. Titanic3. The Dark Knight4. Deathly Hallows Part 25. Avatar6. Toy Story 37. The Avengers8. Dead Man's Chest9. Alice in Wonderland10. Transformers 3
  15. Fri: 15.3mSat: 24.63m (+61%)Sun: 17.73m (-28%)3wk: 57.66So it will need a 3.5x from its 3rd weekend to reach 600M....hmmm....
  16. Pssh downplaying TA's success? That wasn't my intention at all, but i'm sorry if i offended you by putting it as the 5th most impressive OW. Some people are so sensitive about the films they loveAlso, i'm kind of disappointed with the responses I've been getting. TA=current largest OW of all time in $, therefore it's the most impressive opening in history? I was hoping we could dig a little deeper but okay.....
  17. Most impressive OW's 1. Spiderman: So I started following the box office around 2003. Although I never witnessed Spiderman’s OW record, it was THE film to beat for such a long time. By 2006, I still had never witnessed a film break the OW record and I remember thinking that the record was almost impossible to beat. 2. Spiderman 3: Mind boggling. I remember saying this record would not be beaten for AT LEAST 4 years….just like the first spider man. I guess if it wasn’t for The Dark Knight, I would have been right. 3. The Dark Knight: Still has the record for OW attendance, and beat Spiderman 3 only a year later….a feat I thought was nearly impossible. I think I was predicting an OW of 140M at the time….which was pretty huge for 2008. 4. Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest: The first time I witnessed a film break the OW record. This was such a fun film to follow at the box office. Terrible film, but still a huge financial success. It’s also the only film in 15 years to break the OW record that wasn’t a superhero film or book adaption. 5. The Avengers: Very much inflated from 3-D but it’s still the 2nd most attended OW of all time and the first film to make 200M+. 6. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: Well it took 4 years, but finally a film beat Jurassic Park the Lost World. I didn’t witness this opening for myself, but I remember the hype quite vividly. 7. The Lost World: First film to make 70M+ OW and held onto the record for nearly as long as Spiderman 1. 8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: Only 43% of the gross came from 3D, but it was still the reason why this film broke the OW record. It was the fifth largest OW at the time attendance wise (currently #7), but compared to the other films on the list, I have to put this as the least impressive. Most impressive OD's 1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: Even though this was inflated by 3D it still beat the OD record by a huge +25%. It is the most attended OD of all time and I don’t see any film topping it for a while! TDKR might be able to get to 85mil…. 2. Star Wars Revenge of the Sith: Beat the previous record by nearly 25% and was the first film to top 50m…and did it on a Thursday. No one expected it to be THAT big….. 3. Spiderman: Potter was the first film to make more than 30M in one day….a few months later Spiderman opens and does nearly 40m! 4. Star Wars Phantom Menace: Beat the previous record by about +24% on a Wednesday! 5. Spiderman 3 6. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest 7. The Dark Knight 8. The Twilight Saga: New Moon 9. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone 10. Jurassic Park The Lost World 11. Spiderman 2 Most impressive midnight grosses 1. Deathly Hallows Part 2: Even disregarding 3D this topped Twilight’s best midnight showing by a good 30%. It’s midnight gross as a whole day would stand as one of the largest OD’s of all time as well! 2. Star Wars Revenge of the Sith: This was the first film to pull in blockbuster numbers at midnight. It doubled the previous record, and held onto it for 3 years! 3. Spiderman: First in the series and it beat Star Wars….enough said! 4. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King: This was a 3.5 hour film released in December. Not exactly midnight record material…. 5. The Twilight Saga: New Moon 6. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse 7. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 8. The Dark Knight
  18. So it seems like every year or two the OW, OD and midnight records fall. Over the past 15 years we've had 8 films break the OW record, 11 films break the OD record and 9 films break the midnight record. All of these record breaking films made huge numbers for their time but how would you rank each of them based on impressiveness? For example most people would consider Stars Wars's midnight record of 16.5 mil to be far more impressive than Half-Blood Prince's 22.8M midnight record. Star Wars nearly doubled the record at the time and it took 3 years for a film to be beat it. Half Blood Prince beat the record by a mere 4mil and was topped only months later.OW record holdersThe Avengers: 207.4m Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: 169.1m The Dark Knight: 158.4m Spiderman 3: 151.1m Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest: 135.6m Spiderman: 114.8m Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: 90.3m Jurassic Park: The Lost World: 72.1m OD record holdersHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: 91.1m The Twilight Saga: New moon: 72.7m The Dark Knight: 67.1m Spiderman 3: 59.8m Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest: 55.8m Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: 50.0m Spiderman 2: 40.4m Spiderman: 39.4m Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: 32.3m Star Wars: The Phantom Menace: 28.5m Jurassic park: The Lost World: 21.6m Midnight record holdersHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2: 43.5m The Twilight Saga: Eclipse: 30.1m The Twilight Saga: New moon: 26.3m Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: 22.8m The Dark Knight: 18.5m Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: 16.5m Lord of the Rings: Return of the King: 8m Spiderman 1: 7mStar Wars: The Phantom Menace: 6m There really are no right or wrong answers. Some films held the record longer simply because of a lack of blockbuster films over a period of time. But i'm sure everyone on this board has had at least one experience where they came on a BO website and was absolutely floored by a number. That's what I want to hear about.....
  19. I find COS to be the most underrated HP film. It was probably too faithful of an adaption, but i remember as a kid I fell in love with it and nearly ten years later it's still a cute film. DH2 had more potential than any other HP film and I had huge expectations after the amazing Part 1...and it fell short IMO. I even had a few problems with the princes tale....not a popular opinion i know. And what are you talking about? GOF was a great film! It's the third highest rated film of the series on RT and was the first HP film to sell more tickets than the previous instalment.
  20. So it's year 2020, and a popular visionary film maker has just expressed interest in adapting one of the harry potter books - not the whole series just one book. Which book would you be most interested in seeing adapted for a second time? For me it's easily OotP. The longest book=shortest hp film at the time?? Makes no sense. The DA scenes were done all wrong, St. Mungo's should have been kept in, Snapes worst memory needs to be redone completely, the score was terrible, the climax was a let down, Grawp needed to be cut out and some of the lines were absolutely cringe worthy..."boys and girls are not allowed to be within 8 inches of each other"? WTF? Is that supposed to be funny? I'm not laughing....blah i hated that film....yes there were a few good scenes i.e. the dual between Voldy and Dumbledore, but for the most part it was a huge disappointment.
  21. Books 1. Deathly Hallows - A+ 2. Goblet of Fire - A 3. Half Blood Prince - A 4. Prisoner of Azkaban - A 5. Order of the Phoenix - B+ 6. Sorcerer's Stone - B+ 7. Deathly Hallows Part 2 - C+ 8. Order of the Phoenix - D
  22. Well I remember in third grade (2000) there were a few kids in my class who were reading the books but me and my "acquaintances" at the time thought we were way too cool for the series. I think I tried giving the first book a shot in fourth grade when the hype for Sorcerer's Stone was near fever pitch, but I never really got into it. Finally in 5th grade, my friend Leah got me interested in the series when she kept talking about how excited she was for Chamber of Secrets to come out. I got the first 4 books for Christmas in 2002 and was literally OBSESSED for a good 4 years. It was about the only thing I was interested in which didn't really do much for my social life. Finally around 2007 (age 14) I got a grip on myself and became less fanatical....although it has been a huge part of my life for almost the last decade.....
  23. DMC's OW was truely phenomenal. It's still the highest OW ticket seller for a non-superhero movie and well ahead of Shrek 3 for the highest OW that's isn't an adaption of a book/comic series....pretty crazy. And idk if we'll ever have enough evidence to prove that TA sold more/less tickets than TDK. It's certainly right around that range though.....
  24. According to BOM, 3D accounted for 52% of the OW gross. IDK how they came up with that figure since Sunday hasn't even finished yet, but assuming it's true and that the average 3D ticket is 30% higher than an average 2D one we get0.52*200.3=104.156104.156/(7.83*1.3)=10.310.3 + ( 0.48*200.3)/(7.83)= 22.57M TICKETSALL TIME OW TICKET SELLERS1. The Avengers: 22.57M2. The Dark Knight: 22.06M3. Spiderman 3: 21.96M4. Dead Man's Chest: 20.71M5. Spiderman: 19.77M6. The Hunger Games: 19.48M7. Deathly Hallows P2: 19.21M8. New Moon: 19.04M9. Shrek The 3rd: 17.6710. Breaking Dawn P1: 17.42MSo only 4 films have sold more than 20M tickets OW, 3 of which are superhero films. Another thing to note is that TDKR rises would have to sell about 25.58M tickets to break TA's OW record. That would be an unprecedented increase that I think is almost impossible to do.
