I'm not surprised with that R.I.P.D number but good grief. Whoever approved that concept for this kind of budget was insane anyway. I don't think even with a good script and solid reviews this could have ever recouped the massive budget it had.
Still think it ends up right around Purge. WOM won't be that bad but I also don't think it's going to be as incredible as some people think and WOM doesn't really matter OW anyway.
I personally think it's a bit overhyped. It has a lot going for it and is a solid entry in the genre but overall I felt like it was much more tame than I was expecting. Had some really cool aspects, in particular the opening credits and the acting was phenomenal. Vera Farmiga is great in whatever she's doing. I definitely prefer these kinds of old ghost stories to torture porn/gore and this is easily the best horror film in the past year or so (though I'm not sure that's saying too much).
Not willing to praise it as highly as some of the others because I thought it was slow to start and it didn't hold its intensity throughout but definitely worth checking out. I think audience atmosphere has a lot to do with it as well and my audience laughed at several parts that kind of killed the mood. So in my opinion, a solid B+.
I would say that a 250 million gross after a 56 million OW suggests well received. That along with a 32 million OD for an animated film sequel.
I don't think treating a RT score like a test grade is very accurate either. I guarantee this gets an A cinemascore so that's a flawed way of looking at it. With the general audience and families this film was well received there's really no denying that.
To be fair, this opinion is in the minority. I'm not discrediting it, I'm just saying the original is one of the most well received animated movies in the past 5 years. I say see it asap.
Competition aspect makes sense, but a movie with Tatum and Foxx in the dead of summer should have been able to match OHF. Similar storyline sure didn't help anything, but mid 20's is pathetic.
I don't know. This movie isn't aimed at an audience that shows up for midnight/late night previews. I think it makes sense. Even if it goes down to 40, this is doing exactly what I thought.
I think it's a good movie. Solid B. But I couldn't agree more the last part. Brave, Cars II, and this have, for me, all missed that spark that the Pixar greats have. I don't think this touches Monsters Inc on any level.
I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. The story is really interesting and like someone else said I just kept thinking 'i can't believe kids really act like this'. Soundtrack is fantastic. When a filmmaker understands both movies and music it can work wonders and it really takes the film to another level. The cast is great, with Watson and Chang as standouts.
I don't feel like the film didn't say anything I think it just did it in very subtle ways. But I do think more examination of the characters during the repercussions of what they did would have made others like it a bit more.
As always, beautifully shot. Coppola has a knack for very clean, polished camera work and I have to say I think it always works.
I would give it a B+. I enjoyed this more than Spring Breakers if that gives you any idea.
WWZ truly is a testament to 1. how popular the zombie genre is right now and 2. how star power does still exist when they're given the right vehicles. That 51/49 split is ridiculous for this type of film. I for one, thought this was going to be a bomb of the summer (along with AE). Not because it even looked terrible it just had everything going against it with all of the damage control from Paramount and Pitt.
Caught Monsters University and Bling Ring today. Monsters was definitely enjoyable and had some cute moments but overall it just didn't live up to the standard Pixar has set for itself. Missed a lot of the wit of some of the stronger entries in the brand. The Bling Ring was a lot of fun and just a cool story to watch. Have a massive weak spot for Watson but I thought she nailed it. It's typical Coppola but in my opinion that's not a bad thing.
