Dreamworks is having a terrible time lately. Wasn't Fifth estate the worst opening of the year? They really should have opened Delivery man last weekend.
You're totally right, and you were predicting a lower OW than most people here. I think 150m? It's in line with the rest of YA movies released in November. In fact it still has a chance to break the "november OW record"%
really? Theyve had IMAX in the marketing pretty claerly. Jena Malone and Sam have been pretty up and front as the new characters. You havent been paying attention if you didnt know about that. 180-200m was never a realistic opening for this movie considering:
Number 1-it wasnt in 3d
number 2- its a sequel
number 3-Its in November
Lionsgate put on an excellent marketing campaign, IMO. Fangurls expecting 200m were delusional, plain and simple. Bye.
Midnight/Preview numbers dont tell the story of the opening weekend, they're mostly just for record books. Catching Fire didnt set a new record but that's still fantastic number.
I think it pretty clearly indicates that Hollywood execs and these boxoffice predictors dont care about researching films for women, black or hispanic. Yes they do go to the movies and its not surprising. If anyone thinks only white fanboys are giving superhero films these big box office revenues then they're delusional.
That makes alot of sense. Still studios arent losing any money by making these mid-budget films. More risk is involved with potential franchise starters or sequels. So i dont see why there shouldnt be more balance in the market, it's clear there is a place and audience for these films.
It makes you wonder why they make so few these days.- the 90s and early 00s were filled with them. (Menace 2 Society, House Party trilogy, Friday trilogy, Waiting to Exhale, Set It Off and a whole bunch of others.
The first movie is a cult classic and it has a cast full of black actors that are rarely seen on the big screen. I for one am happy to see other films with black leads break out besides Tyler Perry movies, because his films are so one-note and only caters to the religious crowd.
I think BO will depend mostly on Oscar prospects but it should do well on Christmas regardless. People seem to like Affleck as a director more than an actor.
