Elemental was a success in two clear ways. 1) It was a really good product. That’s the only thing a studio can fully control. It’s also not a given. Even for Pixar. 2) After the reviews were not completely raves and the sad OW, customers took to it. A 5x isn’t unprecedented but it is clearly strong. After years of Pixar being absent from theaters and Lightyear being a dud, people came out for it. Of course, Disney wanted more in dollars. A reasonable exec would also see Pixar has a strong pulse going forward.

Shazam and Green Arrow leaning scab. Green Arrow quoting Jordan Peterson for intellectual cred. They just want be to be sad. Stop making me sad. -
Flash now $207,016 behind Scream VI. Double features with Blue Beetle? Double features with Dune 2?

Checking in to see how “awareness” of the problem is going. I know people really did their part by going to see a movie. Kinda still waiting over here in the actual realm of child abuse to see any ounce, morsel or iota of actual difference besides conservatives hugging themselves about how much they care. Anyone want to string some sentences together about awareness? I’m aware some popcorn was sold. That’s cool, I guess.

Yeah, Marvels is clearly going to flop financially. Look at all the MCU movies that have flopped. It’s reasonable to think the next four or five will flop. It’s going to lose more than 60% of its ticket sales without including inflation. It’s really obvious. Also, Alabama football is going to go 2-10 this year. (Y’all need to find different words that describe a middle result.)

There’s saying that Nick Saban has peaked and will never win another national title. (Marvels will drop substantially.) Then there’s saying that Alabama is terrible and will not make a bowl game. (Marvels will be maybe near 60 OW and 175 dom even with good reviews?) A 60%+ domestic drop before considering inflation. That’s possible, but not sure there are that many movies, especially MCU movies, that have done that. Keep in mind that AM3 stayed somewhat flat in raw dollars from AM2 with terrible reviews. All the negative thoughts are connected to reality, but is a decent product really going well below AM3?

Yup, yup. This gets toward a basic point. What if CA4 and Thunderbolts are really good? I guess that’s just an insane proposition. Thor was a nothing property at one point. GOTG was a nothing property at one point. I remember this board after AOU was released. That was the end also. I don’t expect another crazy run like the 2017-2019 one. That’s not realistic. The last one grossed well over 2.5 billion dollars. Seems like there’s a way a billion dollar one can be a success. I don’t like the pseudo-Yankees fan position rooting for the MCU and Disney puts me in, but the venom is so strong and kinda weird.

This is fair. Things succeed or fail for reasons that are unpredictable. I continue to be baffled at the idea Disney is some disaster. All studios struggled with pandemic budgets. It’s easy to see all these execs are morons who don’t know what they are doing, but it seems odd that this problem is randomly affecting all of them in a huge way. (I’m on board with viewing corporate execs with skepticism or hostility because they are very greedy people.) I keeping looking at domestic grosses. Disney is producing popular movies. I’m not sure if that is really in dispute. That seems predictive of some future success.

The Disney Thread | Happy 90th to Donald Duck!

I despise both Coach and player in this analogy but the comparison is not exactly fair. If Brady stayed in NE and Belichick had left to take a middling team to a title… don’t know.
