  1. Gravity is an outlier. I hope studio executives aren't stupid enough to read too much into its success.
  2. Musical/Comedy category may have worked in 1960s but it doesn't work now. True Hollywood musicals are few and far between. Not to mention that the era of highbrow comedy has been over for a while. It is just a completely worthless category made up just to attract a lot of Hollywood stars who wouldn't get nominated in any of the more standard awards categories. This isn't even the worst thing about Golden Globes. The entire awards process is fucked up with only 80 HFPA members determining all the winners. A lot of these HFPA members aren't even real journalists. They are just there and they get to influence Academy voting.
  3. 20% wednesday drop after a 10-11% Tuesday increase means that the movie is still burning off demand so I don't think Thursday will stay flat either.
  4. The movie looks good but this isn't a good trailer. Not many people who will watch this trailer will have any idea what the movie is about. They have a good cast but they need to sell the movie better.
  5. They buy movies for cheap. Most Indie movie domestic distribution rights get sold for something like $1 million or less. They don't spend any money on advertising and rely on "free" media - press junkets , TV interviews etc.. Prints cost is low as well if you are not releasing the movie in more than a few dozen theaters simultaneously. VOD (including ITunes) has been a gamechanger. It isn't that hard for well-received indie movies to make more than a million or two just from VOD these days.
  6. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Lupita N'yongo (Best Supporting Actress).
  7. I don't think Gravity gets any screenplay nomination but agree with the rest.
  8. 12 Years A Slave will probably get the most nominations. BP,BD,three acting noms, screenplay, costume, sound, editing, soundtrack etc. It may get as many as a dozen nominations.
  9. Gravity is the sort of movie that you can only truly judge a few years after its release, like Avatar. Anyone here remember Avatar hype ? Then it lost to The Hurt Locker and today very few people think it deserved to win either BP or BD. Gravity may be in the same boat 5 years from now.
  10. Prisoners' run has been a little disappointing considering the early hype and I think it will fall short of 65 million. The movie should still be profitable though depending on its overseas business.
  11. ^^^ Yep. Captain Phillips is getting only 50 IMAX theaters.
  12. Directing/Producing a major studio movie > Acting in a major studio movie. She has a solid acting career she can go back to if directing doesn't work out for her. She was the #1 earning actress on the Forbes list for the money she made from Maleficient so she is in about as much demand as any other actress in Hollywood.
  13. She is a big box office star but you can't call her the biggest star based on a movie that is getting superlative praise. Blake Lively could've opened Gravity to a pretty good number. The real test of a box office star is when they carry movies that no one else can. eg., Adam Sandler and his sub-10% RT movies for the past decade or Denzel with his critic-proof movies.
  14. Wait for Saturday numbers at least before talking about $300 million. I think the hype will make this movie frontloaded and this will end up doing much better in bigger markets,
  15. 50 million is the upper range. It can still end up with about $40 million.
  16. Woody Allen is one of my favorite directors but he has always been a bit of a douchebag when it comes to women.
  17. The guy and the girl saying together is the most unimaginative and unromantic conclusion to a romantic story/movie. There is a reason why Romeo and Juliet is considered to be one of the greatest romantic stories of all time and is the exact reason why Titanic was such an iconic movie.
  18. notfabio is also reporting the same thing but presales are over-rated for a movie like this. usual megaplex 81 gravity 5 runner 3 grace for tonight so far {nm} notfabio on Oct 03, 20:41 advance sales gravity 41 runner 4 hunger games 80 {nm} notfabio on Oct 03, 20:44 slower pace of advance sales for hunger games vs the first but still pretty good {nm} notfabio on Oct 03, 20:45 What about gravity? What are your thoughts? Seems rather light, or is it way too early to speculate? {nm} Oleg Max on Oct 03, 20:51 Oblivion was pretty light and I would figure a similar core demo so inconclusive at this point {nm} notfabio on Oct 03, 20:57 Real D is giving exhibitors a great deal if they program majority 3D performances this weekend {nm} notfabio on Oct 03, 20:59 The hyperbolic premium ticket sales numbers press is what they want {nm} notfabio on Oct 03, 21:00 do you have Oblivion #s by any chance handy? {nm} Oleg Max on Oct 03, 21:00 Probably less fanboy-ish and more WOM driven than most sci-if {nm} GMov on Oct 03, 22:44 Gravity is imax 3D heavy sales wise followed by 2D then Real D {nm} notfabio on Oct 03, 20:49
  19. It isn't even a primal fear. Maybe getting lost itself is a nightmare for most people but getting lost in space isn't something that has ever happened to any human being as far as I can tell.
  20. ^^^^ David O. Russell is great at getting the most out of his actors but he is an above-average director otherwise. I have never been wowed by any of his work so far. It doesn't help that he is a douchebag in real life.
  21. Nice posters. I am not really sure what to think of this movie. Trailer and posters look good but Sony isn't trying to create any buzz. They have been doing test screenings for the past few weeks but there hasn't been any information leaks as far as I can tell. I am only sure of one thing and that's Amy Adams is not happening this year with actresses like Bullock, Blachett and Dench shining in true leading roles.
  22. ^^^ I agree. Philomena may be flying under the radar for now but Dench may be the most compelling nominee this year which should count for something. AMPAS members like Blanchett and Bullock but they probably like Dench more so that's one more thing working in her favor.
