  1. TIFF premiere is today. Warner Bros Pictures ‏@wbpictures 2m #Gravity star #SandraBullock has arrived! #TIFF13 #Premiere pic.twitter.com/kh9cvGKgtm
  2. Weinsteins have won the auction and they are committing at least $27 million with $20 million going for P&A. I think LGF would've been a much better option because they know how to open a movie. Maybe "a song" will be this year's Silver Linings Playbook. http://www.deadline.com/2013/09/toronto-can-a-song-save-your-life-strikes-chord-with-bidders-hitting-high-notes/#utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter 2ND UPDATE: After an all night auction, The Weinstein Company is nearing a deal to acquire U.S. rights to the John Carney-directed Can A Song Save Your Life? TWC is now in exclusive negotiations and I’m told they are tying down a deal that will land at around a $7 million minimum guarantee for U.S. rights with a P&A commitment of at least $20 million. They are working on the final numbers in what is a very strong deal for the film backed by Exclusive Media and Sycamore, and Exclusive is nearly done auctioning off the remaining foreign countries. There are going to be a lot of tired deal makers roaming around Toronto Sunday, as CAA, UTA and WME were all in the mix making all of these deals, with several bidders in the mix until the wee hours. These kinds of auctions don’t happen that often anymore, but John Carney made an exceptional movie with breakout potential if it is handled right and I’m not surprised so many distributors sparked to it the way they did. Coming in, it looked like Can A Song Save Your Life? and Bad Words would be the big money titles and they didn’t disappoint. Both went in big deals within hours of their premieres. There are still a lot of available titles and it will be interesting to see if the aggressive bidding continues with other pictures that premiere over the next few days. http://www.deadline.com/2013/09/toronto-can-a-song-save-your-life-strikes-chord-with-bidders-hitting-high-notes/#utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
  3. ^^ The auction is down to TWC and LGF.
  4. It is down to LGF and TWC as of 5 minutes ago. UPDATE: The bidding is still going, but it is down to The Weinstein Company and Lionsgate on John Carney’s Can A Song Save Your Life? The sellers have been trying to get to an $8 million minimum guarantee, and at 4:43 AM Toronto time, I have no idea when this one is going to wrap up. But it will go down as one of the more memorable film auctions in recent Toronto Festivals. http://www.deadline.com/2013/09/toronto-can-a-song-save-your-life-strikes-chord-with-bidders-hitting-high-notes/#utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
  5. The movie is getting a lot of praise and $7 million is a pretty hefty asking price for an Indie movie. The fact that there is a bidding war at that price tells me that the early reviews are spot on. I think the best case scenario for the movie is to be bought by Lionsgate/Summit and get the December 13 release date next to Hobbit. I don't think TWC or other smaller indie distributors will be able to release it this year.
  6. Can a song save your life ? and The Railway Man are getting good reviews at TIFF. I think Nicole Kidman and Keira Knightley may be stronger candidates this year than expected.
  7. I think Casey Affleck's voice is also holding back his career. He is a better actor than his brother but it leaves him with fewer options as that's not a voice of a Hollywood leading man.
  8. Brad Anderson - He has directed some of the cult hits of the past decade and no one knows who he is. The Machinist Transsiberian Session 9 Next Stop Wonderland The Call (Halle Berry) He has also directed TV episodes of The Wire, Treme, Boardwalk Empire,Fringe etc.
  9. Kid friendly movies do very well on DVD and home media. They don't have any problems selling domestic and international TV rights either at a good price. There are different profitability standards for kids movies and R-rated movies.
  10. Her situation is very similar to Amy Adams. She is a good actress but both of them should stop chasing Oscars. People have had great careers without ever coming close to winning an Oscar and others have crashed and burned after winning one. It isn't that important.
  11. Ron Howard ‏@RealRonHoward 9h Heart of the Sea coming to life now on back lot tank pic.twitter.com/8Yh4cMsdZG
  12. You can't just ask people why they're white.
  13. Actually, Amy Adams has signed on to a really good role in Big Eyes. That's the sort of role that can win her an Oscar next year as long as she can hold her own against Christoph Waltz.
  14. Rachel McAdams is proving herself to be a very versatile actress and that's not a bad thing. If she gets some awards recognition in the next few years she may very well end up with a better career than Meg Ryan.
  15. James Franco's Oscar campaign - "Consider This Shit".
  16. Obviously I have not seen any of the leading performances this year but I have a tough time seeing Amy Adams win for American Hustle. The movie seems to be a Christian Bale show with good supporting roles for Cooper, Renner and Lawrence. I don't think Amy Adams will have enough juice to take on Bullock , Cate Blanchett and others this year.
  17. I don't think Clooney will get nominated. His role is supposedly very small and he has a much bigger fish to fry this awards season. He is the director, producer and co-lead actor in The Monuments Men.
  18. They should move this to December if Oscars are a real consideration. A movie like this (style over substance) will always face backlash and the less time you give for backlash to start the better off your movie will be in Oscars race.
  19. The supporting actress in 12 Years A slave is getting huge buzz. She may very well snag a nomination. If the movie is strong enough in the Oscar race then I'd say that a Supporting Actress nomination is almost a given.
  20. I have my doubts about Wolf Of Wall Street, American Hustle and The Monuments Men. There is almost no buzz for the first two outside of a razzle-dazzle trailer each which always makes me suspicious about the quality of the movie (see Les Miserables). The Monuments Men looks like something that has been beaten to death too many times to be taken seriously in the year 2013.
  21. I think Angelina Jolie has the right of first refusal on every Hollywood movie featuring a 30 year old actress.
  22. Any contest with thousands of voters eventually becomes a beauty contest and she is well-liked in Hollywood. I think that if her performance is better than her TBS role then she is the favorite.
  23. 1. Timing matters. Blanchett's movie was released in June/July. This will be an October release. 2. This appears to be a Sandra Bullock show. That's always a big plus in the Best Actress category.
  24. I have been skeptical about the concept of this movie for a very long time but good for Cuaron if he has been able to pull it off. It can only mean good things for big budget high concept movies. People are also praising Bullock and I think that she is now a legitimate front-runner for Best Actress.
