  1. Walt Disney Animation Studios. Also thinking about the acting in Prometheus, I rather liked most of the actors. Rapace, Fassbender, Theron, Elba, Spall, and Pearce all did fine in their roles. It's just that the roles were poorly written.
  2. If WDAS was doing the Prometheus sequel, it would dramatically improve its chances of being good.

  4. Today's movies: Tomorrow, When the War Began - It doesn’t quite get to the psychological horror of being forced to take part in a war that the book has, and doesn’t ever address the xenophobic undertones, so it’s pretty much an Australian Red Dawn without being overtly racist. But the action’s pretty good.Fist of Fury - The dubbing job is atrocious, but nobody’s really going to watch it for that. Bruce Lee’s spectacular martial arts at play more than makes up for the film showing its age in other ways.Yobi, the Five-Tailed Fox - Why the fuck were there aliens? Someone really wanted to make a Miyazaki-esque film but didn’t have quite the talent to pull it off. It needed a few excess elements trimmed. Like the aliens.
  5. Oh, certainly. There are some really spectacular bits in the film. It just falls apart as a whole.
  6. This. The character motivations never make any sense. And they're poorly conceived: we're supposed to be following a scientific mission, but nothing in the setup or the actions makes that seem at all plausible. They might be the stupidest scientists shown on film... and considering there was a movie where Denise Richards played a nuclear physicist, that's saying something. Plus the pacing is incredibly bad. It might not be the worst of any film I've seen, but it's close. There are multiple times when it's apparent that they suddenly remembered that "oh, yeah! this is supposed to be a sci-fi horror film" and then up and kill a bunch of characters. There were only two scenes in the entire film that were remotely scary. One was the abortion. The other was the two guys in the relic with the worm thingy. (And that was predicated on them being monumentally stupid.)
  7. Oh, Stranger than Fiction is a good choice. I'd forgotten about that one.
  8. I'm mildly curious about how this goes. There were things enjoyable about the first, but it remains one of the most disappointing and infuriating films I've seen, purely from a construction standpoint. It was like... lots of stupid things, but not enjoyably stupid like in a Michael Bay film. Good visuals, though. They really delivered there.
  9. Today I watched: The Long Goodbye: Not bad neo-noir, but I felt like it lost itself a bit at times. Flyboys: I'm pretty sure there was a good movie in there. The dogfight scenes are pretty enjoyable. However, they apparently wrote, filmed, and edited together about three films to make this one. It could have done with cutting out about an hour of the bloat. Madagascar 3: I really don't like Madagascar, but this one is pretty fun overall, despite feeling a bit disjointed and episodic. Points for perhaps the best use of Katy Perry possible.

  11. This confusion is why it's always best to set a deadline of 11:59pm of a given day.
  12. Seeing Man of Steel made me start laughing so much it caused problems with my workout.
  13. Spirited Away's run is so bloody ridiculous. It might be the most impressive single-market box office run ever.
  14. As we saw in the discussion on the overrated films list, there is a massive misunderstanding about overrated and underrated and what they mean. But I suppose that's going to be an ongoing debate. I wonder if I should have submitted a list. I mostly didn't because I couldn't decide what placement to put everything at.
  15. Just about everything seems to be coming in above estimates.
  16. I was looking at population numbers and realized that the US+Canada is about 15 times the size of Australia in that regard, so plugging that multiplier into Frozen's 31m (US) would give it an equivalent of about $465m. And while that's not quite as crazy as Korea's number, it's pretty massive. From the past several posts, I've gotten the sense that numbers bigger than that are, while not exactly common, not rare either. So do Australians go see a lot of movies, or are the ticket prices relatively high? (Or both, I suppose.)
  17. I wonder if this might be another performance like The Golden Compass. Pretty much killed in the US due to the controversy about it, but cleaned up overseas to be quite respectable overall.
  18. Jerry Bruckheimer? Arguably there was a period when the productions for Bad Boys, PotC, and National Treasure franchises all overlapped.
  19. I think a lot of it isn't so much that Lego is underperforming in most markets, but rather that the US and UK markets are vastly over performing. To be sure it isn't quite doing as well as it should in other markets, but in those cases it's more like down 10-20% rather than the US or UK where it's doing about 60% or so better than expected. If the US gross was heading for 150m the OS gross would be seen as "could be better, but it's okay".
  20. It's interesting that Japan is one market (maybe the only market) that hasn't apparently suffered from ticket price inflation.
  21. Even if he's available, it's a terrible idea to have him direct both ST and SW. They franchises need to start looking different from each-other, not more similar. This is especially true now that a new SW film is going to come out.
  22. I wonder... did Son of God suffer due to God's Not Dead? Is there competition among Christian films.
