We are approaching the holidays yet the box office has not picked up at all. Cumulative admissions were at about 110,000. The average of the same weekend over last 5 years was 158,000 admissions. The lowest a November weekend ever got in the last 5 years was 122,000 admissions. This weekend has established a new low, mostly due to the the failure of 'The Girl in the Spider's Web', which opened 62% lower than its predecessor. Other openers also disappointed. In the meantime, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' out-performed 'The Nutcracker' over the last 7 days, but mostly during weekdays. The weekend numbers were very close, with only a 776-admission difference. This was not as close as last weekend's photo finish between the same two films (424 admissions). They are the only two films of the last 8 years to have achieved a photo finish twice between themselves. Animated films ('A Wizard's Tale', 'Smallfoot') had the best holds. The latter will get close, and could surpass, 100K admissions, as will 'A Star Is Born' which is now near 90K admissions. 'Halloween' had a steep drop which makes it safe to say that it will miss the aforementioned milestone. Next weekend, everyone is praying for a wind of change in the box office, as the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise releases its second film. The first one opened to 58,176 admissions. Anything less than 45,000 admissions for the second one is bound to set off many alarm bells across the industry.
  2. Weekend 01–04/11/2018 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 The Nutcracker and the Four Realms 28,168 – 28,168 1 2 Bohemian Rhapsody 27,744 – 27,744 1 3 Halloween 14,968 -43.1% 61,601 2 4 Zimna wojna (Cold War) [Polish–French–British] 7,728 -17.0% 22,255 3 5 Hunter Killer 7,365 -28.4% 25,264 2 6 A Wizard's Tale (aka Here Comes the Grump) 6,741 -19.3% 16,116 2 7 Smallfoot 4,279 -27.0% 78,619 6 8 A Star Is Born 4,150 -19.4% 84,475 5 9 Venom 3,657 -46.3% 201,086 5 10 First Man 3,380 -62.6% 45,037 3 Source: http://www.grandmagazine.gr/ngine/article/4255/box-office-monomaxia-karuo8rausti-kai-rapsodias-gia-tin-korufh http://freecinema.gr/greek-box-office-they-rocked-you/ The box office has still not escaped the doldrums. Last year, each November weekend saw one film open to about 60K admissions. This time it took the combined admissions of two openers to approach that number. In total, 123,684 admissions were sold at the box office this weekend. The race between 'Nutcracker' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was quite tight. The latter was ahead on Thursday (5,636 admissions) and Friday (5,048 admissions) but the prior managed to sell enough over Saturday (12,126 admissions) and Sunday (11,496 admissions) to make up the difference. The 'Nutcracker' fared much better than the majority of recent Disney fantasy live-action films. However, it was far off from any of the high-profile ones such as 'Alice in Wonderland', 'Beauty and the Beast', 'Maleficent' or 'Cinderella': Fantasy live-action by Disney (since 2008) Title Opening weekend Release date Total Multiple Alice in Wonderland 83,183 Thu 4 Mar 10 243,710 2.93 Beauty and the Beast 57,900 Thu 16 Mar 17 183,750 3.17 Maleficent 45,705 Thu 29 May 14 164,394 3.60 Cinderella 44,917 Thu 12 Mar 15 138,850 3.09 Into the Woods 31,788 Thu 1 Jan 15 77,196 2.43 The Nutcracker and the Four Realms 28,168 Thu 1 Nov 18 – – Oz the Great and Powerful 21,936 Thu 7 Mar 13 80,104 3.65 The Jungle Book 20,488 Thu 21 Apr 16 83,007 4.05 Disney’s Christopher Robin 14,174 Thu 6 Sep 18 33,624 2.37 Alice Through the Looking Glass 13,083 Thu 26 May 16 35,538 2.72 The BFG 11,951 Thu 30 Jun 16 33,588 2.81 Pete's Dragon 11,240 Thu 20 Oct 16 43,294 3.85 'Bohemian Rhapsody' has fared quite well for a music biopic. It has far outgrossed films like 'Ray' (2005) and 'Walk the Line' (2006). 'Straight Outta Compton' was not even released in theaters. It has also done well compared to 'A Star Is Born', which opened a month ago to 18,542 admissions and has had incredible legs, having reached 84K admissions in pursuit of the 100K-admission milestone. A wide range of holdovers had small drops, the best being 'Cold War', whose total nevertheless remains insignificant. One exception is 'First Man', which topped the box office 2 weeks ago but has had sharp drops since then. 'Venom' has made it to 200K admissions and is headed for 210-215K admissions by the end of its run – right around 'Deadpool' and 'Civil War' numbers. Next week, 'The Girl in the Spider's Web', the sequel to 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', will be released. The original opened to 49,810 admissions and finished its run with 192,799 admissions. Let's see if the sequel can revitalize the box office.
  3. Weekend 25–28/10/2018 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 Halloween 26,321 – 26,321 1 2 Hunter Killer 10,291 – 10,291 1 3 Zimna wojna (Cold War) [Polish–French–British] 9,315 – 10,483 1 4 First Man 9,039 -53.5% 35,923 2 5 A Wizard's Tale (aka Here Comes the Grump) 8,351 – 8,351 1 6 Venom 6,816 -52.8% 193,744 4 7 Smallfoot 5,863 -32.7% 73,510 5 8 King of Thieves 5,627 – 5,627 1 9 A Star Is Born 5,151 -36.8% 77,278 4 10 Peppermint 3,356 -59.8% 18,271 2 Source: http://flix.gr/news/box-office-25102018.html In Greece, 'Halloween' was far from the sizzling success it achieved in American cinemas. It opened far worse than any film of the 'Conjuring' franchise but it was on par with 'The Meg' from earlier this year. It also opened better than previous instalments of the 'Halloween' franchise, such as 'Halloween' (2007), which sold 6,700 admissions in Athens, and 'Halloween II' (2009), which sold 5,500 admissions in Athens. 'Hunter Killer' was the only other film to open above 10K admissions, although 'Cold War' made it past said mark when including last weekend's previews. 'Venom' will devour 200K admissions as early as next weekend. 'Smallfoot' scored the best hold of the Top 10. Overall, it was another very quiet weekend, despite the national holiday. October tanked and so 2018 has fallen further behind 2017, 2016 and 2015. It is now trailing 2012 too, by 1.3%, and, without a 'Bond' sequel, a 'Hobbit' film or a 'Star Wars' film, 2018 is on a trajectory that will most likely miss 10 million admissions.
  4. Weekend 19–22/10/2018 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 First Man 19,439 – 19,439 1 2 Venom 14,428 -59.1% 179,227 3 3 Smallfoot 8,710 -31.7% 66,761 4 4 Peppermint 8,345 – 8,345 1 5 A Star Is Born 8,145 -51.7% 67,554 3 6 Bad Times at the El Royale 7,990 – 7,990 1 7 Alpha 4,367 -56.7% 19,559 2 8 Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation 4,048 -5.7% 219,988 15 9 The Old Man & the Gun 2,817 -65.9% 32,461 3 10 Colette 2,658 -53.2% 11,207 2 Sources: http://flix.gr/news/box-office-18102018.html http://freecinema.gr/greek-box-office-first-man-is-actually-first/ The box office continued its downward trend typical of any period that follows a big opening. It barely scored six digits, with 100,242 admissions. However, 'Venom', did not manage to retain its lead. 'First Man' was ...first. Overall, it is still an unimpressive opening and quite low for a first-place finish (although far from the lowest). Holdovers like 'Venom', 'A Star Is Born' and 'Man & Gun' plummeted. However, animated films did well. 'Transylvania 3' is making history, having spent 15 consecutive weekends in the Top 10. I don't have data about films that may have achieved this in the past. I'll try to see if there are any. 'Smallfoot' is also climbing the ranks slowly and is still in pursuit of the 100K-admissions milestone. It will need 20% drops from now on, although next week's holiday may boost it: schools are closed on Friday due to a national holiday.
  5. I didn't know where else to put this comment so here it goes: Back in August I predicted that Disney films that are now in play would push the studio's yearly total to $6.4B WW. It has actually reached $6.55B WW so far. It will comfortably surpass Universal's $6.9B gross (2015) for second-best. Disney currently holds the worldwide record with $7.6B. Three films remain: Nutcracker, Ralph 2 and Poppins 2. It looks like it can make about $1B from these three by the end of 2018 (NB: not from the three films in total, but only by the end of 2018). Making that into a range: $0.8–1.15B leads to a projected total of $7.35–7.7B. At the higher end of that range, Disney still has chances of breaking its own all-time record. The likelihood of this will become clearer as we approach the end of the year.
  6. Weekend 11–14/10/2018 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 Venom 35,306 -47.1% 145,600 2 2 A Star Is Born 16,857 -9.1% 49,846 2 3 Smallfoot 12,756 -13.4% 56,445 3 4 Alpha 10,092 – 10,092 1 5 The Old Man & the Gun 8,260 -28.9% 26,603 2 6 Colette 5,684 – 5,684 1 7 Down a Dark Hall 4,660 – 4,660 1 8 Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation 4,294 +2.5% 215,689 14 9 The House that Jack Built [English-language Danish–French–German–Swedish] 3,967 – 3,967 1 10 Blinky Bill the Movie 3,124 +7.8% 6,481 2 Source: http://flix.gr/news/box-office-11102018.html The weekend saw the top triad remain the same as last weekend. Openers were weak, while holdovers exhibited rare stamina. Starting with the weekend's winner, 'Venom' comfortably retained its lead. What was unexpected though was its solid 47% drop. That was in the same league as 'Marvel's the Avengers' and 'Wonder Woman'. All superhero films that dropped less than 50% on their sophomore frame had a multiplier of at least 3.2x. That would send 'Venom' to a 214K-admission total – good for the year's 5th place. Anything higher than that could push it past 'Deadpool 2' to rank as the second-best superhero film of the year, behind 'Infinity War'. Not bad at all. 'A Star is Born' stayed in second place and held spectacularly well. Can it top 100K admissions? It undoubtedly will if drops stay this small. 'Smallfoot' is capitalising on the empty animated market and could also be aiming for a six-digit total. 'Transylvania 3' has now stayed in the Top 10 for a whopping 14 weeks (15 weeks including previews). Its admission total is far from record-breaking but it currently ranks 4th on the yearly chart and could even reach 3rd place. No opener merits analysis. An honorable mention goes to 'Alpha' for topping 10K admissions. Next week seems to be very quiet, with 'Venom' probably threepeating at the top. For an updated 2018 yearly chart, click here.

This was exclusively thanks to 'Venom', in which Tom Hardy continues the theme of playing roles that involve covering his face in some way. For a solo superhero film, it has done quite well, opening lower than 'Deadpool' but higher than 'Hancock', 'Iron Man' (61.4K admissions) and 'Doctor Strange' (58.2K admissions). It was also far off from its archenemy, 'Spider-Man', but no one was expecting it to go that high: Superhero openings (since 2003) Rank Title Opening weekend Total Release date 1 Spider-Man 3 159,000 366,987 03/05/07 2 Avengers: Infinity War 129,549 363,402 26/04/18 3 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 122,428 276,311 24/03/16 4 Captain America: Civil War 101,800 215,155 05/05/16 5 The Dark Knight 100,000 339,520 17/07/08 6 Avengers: Age of Ultron 94,250 224,334 30/04/15 7 Deadpool 2 82,773 221,147 17/05/18 8 Spider-Man 2 82,300* 385,700 07/07/04 9 Deadpool 77,774 217,832 18/02/16 10 The Avengers 75,755 242,565 26/04/12 11 The Dark Knight Rises 74,530 346,585 21/08/12 12 Venom 66,795 66,795 04/10/18 13 Iron Man 3 66,278 206,006 25/04/13 14 Hancock 64,603 129,239 18/09/08 15 Justice League 62,658 158,596 16/11/17 *3-day (Fri-Sun) opening 'Venom' is probably going to finish around 180,000 admissions. The 200K-admission milestone is possible but not probable at this stage. It will greatly depend on its legs but the 3x multiplier required to achieve that is uncommon among superhero films. 'A Star is Born' and 'The Old Man & the Gun' both topped 10K admissions and, when taking into account 'Smallfoot', it is the first time in 7 months that at least 4 films top 10K admissions in a single weekend. 'Hotel Transylvania 3' is back in the Top 5 and has broken a record (since 2015) for the longest stay in the Top 10: 13 (consecutive) weekends. It should get to at least 15. The previous high was achieved by 'Home' and 'La La Land', tied at 12. When taking into account its preview weekend, it has spent 14 consecutive weekends in the Top 10 and 12 weekends in the Top 5. 'The Nun' is now the second-biggest release of 2018, behind 'Avengers: Infinity War'. At the moment, the only contender to take its place is 'Transylvania 3'. 'The Nun' has surpassed all previous instalments of the 'Conjuring' franchise by far and should finish very close to 250K admissions.
  8. Have 'Incredibles 2' or 'MI:6' surpassed the 5 billion yen milestone yet?

Total admissions were around 90,000 admissions, a further drop from the previous weekend's 98,264 admissions. An animated film was the only film to sell more than 10,000 admissions. 'Smallfoot', which was boosted by last weekend's previews, still failed to attract a significant number of followers, although animated films are known for their staying power rather than strong openings. No better example than 'Transylvania 3', which has crossed 200,000 admissions and is showing no signs of slowing down, after a 30% boost. 'The Nun' is days away from topping 'Deadpool 2' for the year's 2nd place. That being said, the Drac Pack is now seriously in pursuit of 2nd place too. 'Johhny English 3' crashed on its sophomore frame and is unlikely to reach 100,000 admissions. With only a quarter of the year left, 2018 has fallen further behind 2017 and 2016, trailing them by 6.2% and 10.1% respectively. It is 1.2% behind 2015, but that year was boosted significantly in its final quarter by films like 'Hotel Transylvania 2', 'Spectre', 'Star Wars 7' and the year's winner, 'Worlds Apart'. It looks like 2018 will finish below previous years, around 9.5 million admissions. For an updated 2018 yearly chart, click here.

The original had opened to 15,000 admissions in April 2003 and finished its run north of 150,000 admissions (the exact total is unknown but this is the admission total on the last weekend before dropping below the Top 10). The sequel, 'Johnny English Reborn', opened to a significantly higher 40,740-admission weekend in September 2011 but was also more frontloaded, resulting in a final total of 151,449 admissions. The threequel will be lucky to cross the 100K-admission milestone, by the look of things. No other openers did notable numbers. Meanwhile, 'The Nun' has crossed 200K admissions and seems poised to become the 2nd-biggest film of the year. It may even do so by next weekend. 'The Equalizer 2' is looking at a final tally of 50K admissions, which is significantly lower than its predecessor's 76K-admission total. The weekend before the last, 'Hotel Transylvania 3' achieved the unprecedented feat (since 2015) of remaining in the Top 5 for 10 consecutive weekends. Add in the preview weekend, on which it ranked second, and that makes it 11 weekends in the Top 5. It has also matched 'La La Land' for the longest stay in the Top 10: 12 weekends (when including the preview weekend). It is likely to break that record as it also crosses the 200K-admission milestone – clearly remaining unaffected by the arrival of 'Smallfoot'. It is by far the most successful film of the summer (June to August). 'M:I6 – Fallout' is days away from topping 'Rogue Nation' and is headed for about 150K admissions in total. 'Ghost Protocol's' total remains out of reach. Cumulative admissions were around 100K admissions (give or take) in what has clearly been the weakest September since 2014. No wonder, if you take into account that there hasn't been an 'Inside Out', a 'Minions', a 'Dory' or a 'Despicable Me 3' to boost it.

It took it only 11 days to top all previous films of the 'Conjuring' franchise. Interestingly, it had a hold identical to last year's 'It'. If it follows the same trajectory as that film, it would reach 205K admissions. However, that film dropped quite heavily after its 2nd weekend. This one needs to hold only slightly better to become 2018's second biggest film, ahead of 'Deadpool 2' (221K admissions). This seems doable. If it continued to drop by 54% from now on, it would get to 230K admissions. 'The Equalizer 2' opened 20.4% lower than its predecessor (22,288 admissions). That film finished its run with 76,181 admissions, a number which the sequel can only achieve with an unlikely 4.3x mutliplier. 'The Predator' performed even worse as a sequel of the once popular 'Predator' franchise, which has seen every new film decline from the previous one: 'Alien vs Predator' (2004): opened to 16,400 admissions in Athens (nationwide opening unknown) 'Alien vs Predator – Requiem' (2007): opened to 10,600 admissions in Athens (nationwide opening unknown) – 35% drop 'Predator' (2010): opened to 9,570 admissions nationwide – 34% drop in Athens. Reached 25,294 total admissions. 'The Predator' (2018): 11% drop nationwide 'Fallout' is still leading 'Rogue Nation' by 9K admissions at the same point in its run but has fallen behind 'Ghost Protocol', which, boosted by the Christmas holidays, had reached 144K admissions by its 3rd weekend. 'Drac Pack 3' is continuing its impressive run. It is poised to top 200K admissions and 'Toy Story 3' very soon. It is close to surpassing other recent animated films such as 'The Secret Life of Pets' (208K admissions) and 'Ice Age 5' (215 admissions). 'Christopher Robin' had a sharp drop, while 'The Meg' will definitely miss 100K admissions, and maybe even 90K admissions.
  13. It is $7M away from topping Iron Man 2, which would only make it the second worst first sequel of the MCU. Not bad though for an ant... Let's face it, this was never gonna be mega-hit and it didn't need to. But it's surpassed its predecessor by about 20%. More than what most sequels achieve.

It was by far the biggest debut of the franchise, as seen in the table below. If it follows the trajectory of the most frontloaded film of the fanchise so far, 'Annabelle' (3.1x mutliplier), it would still make 236K admissions, enough to rank second for the year. However, even a 2.7x multiplier would be enough for it to get past 200K admissions so I'm gonna bet this milestone will be crossed soon. A safe lead for the moment, even though it is hard to predict its final total. 'Christopher Robin' opened among the ranks of 'Alice 2' (13,083 admissions) and 'The BFG' (11,951 admissions). Thanks to a significant boost, 'Hotel Transylvania 3' has topped its predecessor, as well as 'Cars 3' and Shrek 3', among other animated threequels. It is therefore looking poised to cross 200K admissions by the looks of it and it may even top 'Toy Story 3'.
  15. Maybe weekday figures from last week were underestimated. I dunno, sometimes it makes me wonder as well...
  16. If you discount Italy and Germany, Toy Story 3 was only $10M ahead at the same point in its run (OS weekend Aug 27-29), when all the Scandinavian countries were released. TS3 made $35M in Italy and Germany combined so a $650M total for I2 is doable.

Therefore, the first weekend of the new season (which may start in August) is usually reserved for one of the most high-profile releases of the year, especially since very few franchises dare to release a film in the middle of the summer and with good reason (they usually don't get the best results). This year, the lucrative spot was occupied by 'Mission: Impossible – Fallout', the latest chapter in a two-decade long franchise. It definitely did not disappoint, and given that it is actually one of the more enjoyable instalments in the series, it may achieve a good multiplier. However, cumulative admissions overall were very weak (103,918) – the weakest for the first September weekend since 2011, when 'Captain America: The First Avenger' led a weekend that sold 102,190 admissions in total. And no wonder cinemas are so quiet – there is a film released 8 weeks ago in this weekend's Top 3... So here is a comparison of 'Fallout' with the rest of the Tom Cruise franchise: Mission: Impossible Title Athens OW National OW Release date Total admissions Mission: Impossible II – – Fri 27 Oct 00 368,464 Mission: Impossible – – Fri 15 Nov 96 228,832 Mission: Impossible III 65,500 98,900 Wed 3 May 06 209,927 Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol 31,140 46,440 Thu 15 Dec 11 185,264 Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation 31,378 41,749 Thu 27 Aug 15 139,695 Mission: Impossible – Fallout 39,107 52,700 Thu 30 Aug 18 52,700 After reaching a peak with its second outing, the franchise has been in steady decline, a trend that 'Fallout' is aiming to reverse. Should it have good holds from now on, it could certainly aim for a total above 200K admissions and maybe even give the original a run for its money. However, that is quite unrealistic. 'M:I5' had a 3.3x multiplier while having to deal with competition from 'Inside Out', 'Ant-Man', 'Minions', 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' and 'Maze Runner 2', among others. This one has far less competition from high-profile franchises, so it should at least match that multiplier, which would lead to north of 175,000 admissions. Reaching 'Ghost Protocol's' total is not out of the question but it will have a tough time reaching 200K admissions. 'Dunkirk' managed to do so a year ago, after opening to 53,457 admissions, so we'll see... Looking below the top spot, 'The Meg' [UPDATE: had a standard 52% drop. Yesterday, it was mistakenly reported that it had sold 90,597 admissions so far. That is extremely unlikely since it means its Monday-to-Wednesday total would add up to more than its two first weekends (51,868 vs 38,739 admissions). I think the other source (grandmagazine.gr) has a more accurate number which I have updated above (60,068). The film will probably miss the 100K-admission milestone.] 'Drac Pack 3' has capitalised on the absence of animated fare and could even reach 200K admissions, if the holds keep being so strong. 'The Children Act' and 'Sueño en otro idioma' had good, but not great, per-screen averages (596 and 708 admissions, respectively), but admissions for most films have been below a level that would merit an... honourable mention.
  19. August BO somewhere around 6.8–6.9B yuan. Down about 7% from last year. Summer BO 17.4B yuan. Up 7% from last year. http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1118125.shtml
  20. I know rankings are not proportional to commercial success. All I'm saying is that it's funny.
