That seems like a decent strategy for the US. I could see something where when theaters start to come back, they'll just play stuff like Endgame, Joker, Parasite, and maybe Onward, since people aren't going to head out to theaters right away. That implies that Soul will not be delayed. The big issue with your theory is the movie's audience. The vast majority of people who were going to see Onward are Disney fans who likely already have Disney+, and this isn't some mega blockbuster or massively hyped release that would make people on the fence about Disney+ want to get it. I'm sure maybe a few people will sign up, but I doubt it would be that much. And again, $20 for a family of 4 really isn't that expensive, especially families in big cities.

In a lot of areas, it's way more than that. Matinee tickets only go up to $10 here, and cost about $13-15 past 4PM. $20 rental isn't that far off from what evening tickets here cost. And if people are stuck at home with other people, that makes the $20 pricetag easier to swallow. And of course, in a few months, they'll drop down the rental price. This is basically just for people who want to see a movie first thing.
