  1. Melissa McCarthy continues to be engaging, but this is such a scattershot affair that I'm surprised that it got released in its finished form. The screenplay, co-written by McCarthy herself, tries to balance between the type of humor the actress has become associated with and a character study, but it does so in a rather inconsistent manner that is unlikely to really satisfy either side. Still, the cast makes it a pleasant enough experience. McCarthy continues to prove her overnight transition from longtime character actress to leading lady has been welcome even though her "broad comedy" shtick is starting feel kind of rote, and she has an enjoyable chemistry with Susan Sarandon (always a pleasure), although I had to keep being reminded that she was playing McCarthy's grandmother (she would've been more believable as her mother instead). Beyond Sarandon, we find a wealth of talent in supporting roles, including Allison Janney, Kathy Bates, Dan Aykroyd, Toni Collette, and others. I really wish McCarthy and director/co-writer Ben Falcone (her husband in real life who has appeared in all of her films since Bridesmaids, including this film) had come up with a better project together than this forgettable effort but I guess it's nice that they got the opportunity at all. C+

  3. Movies always take a considerable dip on Wednesdays when new releases open on them.
  4. It's always been my belief that if you find yourself chatting with your friends on the Internet as you are sitting in a dark movie theater while a film is running, that's when you know you have an addiction problem. LOL.
  5. Even so, any time I'm at the movies I always turn my cellphone off. The world can wait for two hours.
  6. Wait a second: Baumer, you're texting/chatting with us as the movie is running? For shhhammmmmeeeee. I always turn my phone off when I'm at the movies.
  7. Into the Storm looks like Sharknado minus the Z-grade cast of people to laugh at (Tara Reid already playing the mother of a teenager? Time flies) or the ridiculously insane bad movie fun. And who wants to see that movie?
  8. Yeah, when was the last time they decided not to release a big tentpole or something over 4th of July weekend? I'd like to say 2001 when Cats & Dogs and Scary Movie 2 opened but I'm sure the latter was expected to do much better than it actually did.
  9. This love has taken its toll on meShe said Goodbye too many times beforeAnd her heart is breaking in front of meI have no choice cause I won't say goodbye anymore
  10. By the way, I think I read yesterday that the budget for Tammy was only $20M? It's going to end up making a profit by the end of this weekend so there is no way it can possibly be considered a flop.
  11. I mentioned this before but the marketing shift in tone for Earth to Echo was pretty funny and bizarre. Look at the two posters for the film for no greater evidence of this.
  12. Yeah, I think some (well, BOM only, really) thought this summer just had to have a big horror breakout just because The Conjuring was big last year and that Deliver Us From Evil would be a repeat, when that was an exception, not the rule. This has not been a good year for horror at the box office at all so far, so I'm not sure why they thought this would be different.
  13. A $6M opening day for Tammy is solid but that C+ score spells nothing but doom. Even Identity Thief got a B. Okay for Earth to Echo and Deliver Us From Evil (although man, BOM really overpredicted it in the summer predictions 2+ months ago), I guess. The horror movies this year just aren't really catching on with audiences at all.
  14. A C+ CinemaScore grade for Tammy seems...pretty ominous. And glad you enjoyed Begin Again, Boogie Nights. Gonna try and see it (instead of Jersey Boys) over this holiday weekend.
  15. OMG guys have you heard of these awesome bands called Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls or this awesome new home video format called DVD?! Gah! But really, I remember Titanic-mania like it was yesterday. Oh to be a junior in high school again...
  16. Did you ever see her Razzie acceptance speech? LMFAO she is the fucking best. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghS98BKy29Q
  17. LOL I completely forgot about All About Steve's existence. I'd love to see Sandra and BCoop make a movie, preferably a romcom, now that doesn't have a grotesque premise like that did.
  18. Into the Storm looks like an inevitable bomb and The Expendables 3 is limited in appeal (despite the PG-13 rating for this one), so that's two down. Let's Be Cops is opening in the We're the Millers slot, but starpower is zilch and it's opening after a summer filled with comedies so who knows.
  19. They always crowd August up every single year. 2009 showed that with the right movies it is possible for there to be hits in the month (despite the idiocy of putting two horror sequels on the same weekend). But the month is mostly treated as a dumping ground 90% of the time. I mean, just look at the movies opening in the second half.
