They both may or may no be big hits but they have built in fan bases and might take away from people who are on the fence about Mena, unless of course it has big award buzz around it then it will be alright regardless. I want to see a 30-35m opening for Mena, and 4X multiplier which can happen with good reviews and award nominations/wins.
So this movie is supposed to open a week after Assassins Creed, and Passengers, and has The Dark Tower opening the week after it. Unless they anticipate some serious award nominations and wins that seems like a horrible release date.
220m on a 60m budget while having to change the release date and limit marketing because of a shooting is a good. Of course it was going to get a sequel even more so after the success it found post theatrical run.
A lot of good was created for Cruise among the online community with EOT and MI5. He gained a whole new audience from these last two movies. Mena and Jack Reacher 2 will be hits and expand his fan base even further. MI6 will be even bigger.
You have to think if they had the time they would have converted MI5 to 3d and probably would have made another 50-60m. Question is would that be worth it for them given the take china keeps.
Good torrent just leaked, any chance it had at making 700m or beating GP is gone now in my opinion. I'll be surprised if it reaches 200m domestically after the leak.
I was walking down along the street and I heard this voice saying, "Good evening, Mr. Dowd." Well, I turned around and here was this big six-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamp-post. Well, I thought nothing of that because when you've lived in a town as long as I've lived in this one, you get used to the fact that everybody knows your name.
Two people died on set today in a plane crash. Cruise was not on the plane having wrapped a scene prior in the day. A third person was seriously injured but survived. Sad news. http://deadline.com/2015/09/two-killed-during-mina-shoot-tom-cruise-alive-1201522272/
Going to finish with a very good 690-700m, if it had a better release date in China it would have made more. All I know is if MI6 is even pretty good then it will be a beast. 850-900m world wide.
It's not just about star wars. Why would you open a huge spy franchise just weeks after another one opens? That and star wars was good reason to move it. The movie is doing well, and in fact has gained a lot of good will among audiences, especially the younger crowd. Expect MI6 to be much bigger.
