  1. Sing just came off a 20M weekend, PiB had a much stronger Monday comparatively.
  2. Kids movies are never particularly strong on weekdays. I worked at a movie theater for seven years, and without fail, kids movies only had marginally better attendance on Tuesdays than other weekdays. Factor in the fact that ticket prices are cheaper, and you’re not going to see these massive increases often.
  3. I really really liked PiB but Pinocchio absolutely deserves it. I'd even have Turning Red in 2nd place. PiB in third.
  4. Release Trolls the first week of November. The first film went up against Dr. Strange on the same weekend and did well.
  5. Between this, M3GAN, Cocaine Bear, Violent Night, and Knock at the Cabin, I love that Universal is going all out with balls to the wall concepts.
  6. I really hope they lean into the campiness more in the sequel. Saw this again with a crowd this weekend, and people's reactions to the few really fun and campy scenes in the movie made it honestly a better watch the second time around.
  7. Some nice milestones that are looking (at least semi) likely. Avatar crossing 650M will be sweet. Last time that happened twice in the same year was 2018, and before that... I'm not sure? 700M is a possibility too, which would be the first time ever I'm sure. Violent Night is going to cross 50M. Really nice sleeper-hit run for that film. Glad to see it! Menu probably won't reach 40M, but the fact it came close is pretty awesome, especially in this environment of moviegoing. Puss in Boots will probably reach 120M or so, which after its opening weekend is a great recovery! Whale will cross 10M which... bleh if this was 10 years ago. But in this environment, that's a win. Go Brendan! Otto will probably have a decent run once it expands into wide release. Hoping for a 50M total for that film, would be nice to see older audiences finally coming back to theatres for "traditional" older fare, not just the once-in-a-generation events like Maverick.
  8. M3GAN locally suggests about 7.5M true Friday. But this is coastal Canada, which usually underindexes slightly for horror (Black Phone bombed here, but Smile actually did pretty well).
  9. Honestly 3-4M for Otto would be pretty great. Could see close to 10 next weekend which, for adult fare in these times, would be pretty solid. The book apparently sells really well still, which my friends who work at (Canada’s version of Barnes n Noble) have attested to.
  10. Invitation/Black Phone opened in the summer, when IMs are weaker. January horror should have better holds throughout the weekend than that.
  11. 8M+ lol but Canada has been overindexing like crazy so I'm not sure what that would translate to.
  12. Twice lol. Basically kicked off the torture porn craze of the 2000s, and the demonic haunting craze of the 2010s.
  13. I really have to say I’m surprised at the reviews. My earlier comments I wanted to keep vague, but really what disappointed me with this was how generic and straightforward this was. Other than the scenes we saw in the trailer, there isn’t much that was campy about this, and it felt overall like a slightly tamer Child’s Play (2019). There’s some humour, but it’s not THAT funny. There’s some wit, but it’s not THAT witty. The “dancing M3GAN” scene from the trailer plays very well in the movie, and given how straightforward the movie was I can see some audiences really liking it. But maybe this was just a reverse Malignant for me (with that film, I expected a straightforward horror film and got a batshit crazy… whatever that was and it was glorious. Here, I expected a batshit crazy feature and got more of a straightforward killer doll movie). It isn’t “bad” but I really didn’t think people would love it as much as they are. Oh well, maybe it’ll play better on second viewing. I do hope it’s a hit, I want more original movies making money at the box office, so if this can make 30M+ this weekend I’ll be extremely happy. Good for Blumhouse.
  14. I kind of am lol. Now that the embargo’s lifted, I can say a bit more. No spoilers, but I’ll tag it just in case people want to go in with no opinions from others.
  15. Wow, good for them! Movie definitely looks sleek, so they definitely got their money's worth.
  16. Ugh, this was a slog. No momentum propelling the story forward, and whenever there did seem to be a little bit of intrigue, it quickly vanished amidst scenes that were overlong and lacked focus. Didn’t really have a problem with any of the acting, it was just everything around it that was a chore to sit through.
