  1. Ok, I've added in the +1 bonus point to Premium George, Sheikh, WrathOfHan, Infernus and myself for helping with scoring (which will explain the weird decimal points after our scores), I haven't found any more typos and no one has pointed any out to me in a bit. So, time to repost the SoTM + QotW + Weeklies current score standing: 1. WrathOfHan - 2,348.001 2. ZeeSoh - 2,223 3. Wrath - 2,145.501 4. Sheikh - 2,141.001 5. 2. 2008 actually wasn't a bad year for movies. It wasn't a great year, but In Bruges, Gran Torino, Milk, The Wrestler, Blindness, Burn after Reading, Benjamin Button, are all movies that seemed interesting at the time, and then stuff like Quantum of Solace, Taken, and Hancock are things I normally would have seen and are at least semi-iconic in their own ways, yet I missed 'em all.
  3. Huh. Looking over the lists, 2008 appears to have been a year in which I didn't watch very many movies. My list is going to suck. Will send in my list, such as it is, shortly. Edit - There. Entered. Looks like I've seen exactly 15 movies from that year. Some pretty bad ones made my list. Edit2 - Did no one else see Be Kind, Rewind? It was one of the very few good movies I saw that year.
  4. Dammit. I forgot to update my placeholder guesses. Argh. Of all the weeks...
  5. Action Point is coming for you. It might not have enough to stop you on its own, but its going to try. edit - as a general reminder to everyone (I know you know this well) the pre-season is the single biggest source of points. Han’s 200k lead looks big now, and its significant, but there are individual bonus awards that people will get which are worth more. Han has a good lead, and I wouldn’t say it’s anybody’s game (ChD isn’t going to win), but there’s a lot of drama to come.
  6. I think its pretty remarkable that despite total scores in the 2,000,000-range, a single bonus point is, atm, an actually significant tie breaker.
  7. Also good points. ChD was the only one left out of SoTM 5 (-5k), and AndyLL, ChD and captainwondyful were left out of SotM 1 (-10k). But 4 people were left out of SotM 2 (+30k), captainwondyful, SchumacherFTW, ChD, and Deja23. Those are now corrected as well. I'll give it a bit in case anything else turns up, then I'll re-post.
  8. I'll double-check. Edit - Yep, you're right. I had a typo. Put down that s/he got 11.5 for SotM 2 instead of 111.5. Simionski's score is 100k higher than I put above.
  9. And, it occurs to me that if I build off Sheikh's fine work on the weeklies (hopefully that's ok), we can add those totals together, and get a combined score. Again, formatting is awful so I'm just doing the grand totals to avoid anyone wanting to stab their eyes (or me). Thanks to Sheikh and Infernus for the excellent scoring work. Worth noting that some of the scores, even after all this, are really, really close (there's a tie for 5th!). Sure, the totals are in the millions, yet when it comes to placements even 5k points here or there on individual questions almost always ends up mattering in the end. Weekly + SotM totals: 1. WrathOfHan - 2,348k 2. ZeeSoh - 2,223k 3. Wrath - 2,145.5k 4. Sheikh - 2,141k 5(t). aabattery - 2,114.5k 5(t). Infernus - 2,114.5k 7. Jake Gittes - 2,088k 8. chasmmi - 1,953k 9. Simionski - 1,951k 10. Fancyarcher - 1,922k 11. Deja23 - 1,921.5k 12. kayumanggi - 1,895k 13. MrPink - 1,853.3k 14. baumer - 1,831k 15. bcf26 - 1,802.6k 16. JJ8 - 1,731k 17. glassfairy - 1,688.5k 18. That One Guy - 1,534k 19. 24Lost - 1,492.3k 20. MovieMan89 - 1,464k 21. Empire - 1,387.5 22. Panda - 1,154.5k 23. grey ghost - 1,058k 24. Chewy - 865.5k 25. captainwondyful - 842k 26. Kalo - 679k 27. Druv10 - 406k 28. The Dark Alfred - 361k 29. Premium George - 343.5k 30. Slambros - 289k 31. Tree - 244k 32. Telemachos - 237k 33. Spaghetti - 118k 34. AndyLL - 97k 35. ChD - 55k 36. SchumacherFTW - 47k 37. Mike Hunt - -63k
  10. SotM Totals Ok, I've added up all the SotMs plus the Weekly Question scores and I've got a total. I've fiddled with the formatting but I can't make it anything less than hideous, so I'm just posting the totals for everyone. I'm happy to send the spreadsheet to anyone who wants to look at the numbers. Here they are: ZeeSoh - 826k WrathOfHan - 789k Wrath - 788.5k bcf26 - 772.6k Jake Gittes - 735k aabattery - 714.5k chasmmi - 672k MovieMan89 - 671k Fancyarcher - 668k Infernus - 635.5k That One Guy - 627k Sheikh - 593k Simionski - 577k Deja23 - 549.5k Panda - 525.5k kayumanggi - 500k MrPink - 481.3k baumer - 480k glassfairy - 431.5k 24Lost - 427.3k Druv10 - 406k grey ghost - 399k JJ8 - 383k Kalo - 276k Empire - 250.5k Chewy - 244.5k captainwondyful - 170k Telemachos - 167k Slambros - 93k The Dark Alfred - 71k Spaghetti - 42k AndyLL - 38k Avatree - 28k SchumacherFTW - -6k Premium George - -9.5k Mike Hunt - -127k
  11. SotM 1 - The Regionals 9 countries (UK, Australia, Russia, Germany, France, South Korea, Japan, Brazil, Mexico). Pick a country, then guess then top 3 movies in that country (for the game period) along with predicted gross (in that country, in $US) for each movie. Correctly guessing movies wins points, getting movies in the exact right spot is worth even more, and you can gain or lose points based on how close you got on the grosses. UK, Australia, and to a lesser extent South Korea were really popular, but they made up the middle of the results. 1 person predicted for each of Mexico, Russia, Germany, and Brazil. Those four people turned in the 2 very best and the 2 very worst scores. No one picked France or Japan. The primary bete noir for most contestants was Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which was in the top 3 for every country, except the UK and Australia. It came in 4th in both of those countries, and *everyone* who predicted for the UK and Australia included it. Also, as you might have expected at this point, predicting Solo was bad news. On to the scoring. And we begin with a special spotlight on the performance of Druv10 who predicted for Mexico. Druv10 got all 3 movies correct (A:IW, I2, JW:FK), and in the right order. But not only that, Druv10 nailed the totals almost perfectly, getting within 2.5% on A:IW and JW:FK, and within 5% on I2 (about $1M away from getting within 2.5% on I2, so it was close). Druv10 - 355k - If Druv10 had been $1M closer on Incredibles 2, it would have kicked in another *260k* bonus points, bringing the total to 615k. But, it was not to be. Druv10 will have to live with a paltry 355k. Honorable mention to Jake Gittes who predicted Russia, and got all 3 movies right and in the right order. Not nearly as accurate on the grosses, but it was still enough to bring in a ton of bonus points. Jake Gittes - 220k Now, everyone else: ZeeSoh - 85k (best score among the people who picked South Korea) Chasmmi - 70k JJ8 - 60k (best score among the people who picked Australia) MovieMan89 - 60k bcf26 - 55k Panda - 55k Simionski - 50k glassfairy - 45k Infernus 45k Mike Hunt - 45k (tied for best score among the people who picked UK) Wrath - 45k (tied for best score among the people who picked UK) The Dark Alfred - 45k 24Lost - 40k Chewy - 30k Premium George - 30k Fancyarcher - 25k grey ghost - 25k kayumanggi - 25k aabattery - 20k Avatree - 15k Kalo - 15k MrPink - 15k Sheik - 15k Telemachos - 15k That One Guy - 15k WrathOfHan - 15k Empire - 10k SchumacherFTW - 5k Spaghetti - 5k baumer - 0 Slambros - 0 (Germany) Deja23 - -40k (Brazil)
  12. Scoring SotM 1 now, which will wrap up the SotM's. After that's done, I'll post a ranking total for everyone's results on the SotM's (plus QotW's). A couple notes on SotM 1 so far. Its kind of annoying to score since you need to keep track of the totals for a bunch of movies across a bunch of countries, but its totally worth it for two reasons. First, I get to do a bunch of math in my head and that's always fun. Second, I got to score what may have been the most dominant performance I've ever seen on a SotM. You know how there was the one SotM where Han got 150k and everyone else got like 30k or less? Han wishes he was even close to this result. And the real kicker is that, as impressive as the result was on its own, if one of the guesses been just a *little* closer, the score would have been much higher. Edit - Wow. Someone else just totally crushed it as well. Not as dramatically as the first person, merely as dramatically as Han won the prior one.
  13. SotM 7 - Screw going low, Go high and go for glory!!! 10 questions. The challenge was to see how close you could guess the answer to each, without going over. The closer your answer, the more points you got, but if you were over by even $1 or 0.001%, you lost points instead. Additionally, your raw score was increased by a mulitplier based on how many questions you got right (and the final score was then rounded up to the next 1,000 if necessary). I'm going to say up front that, now that I've scored it, this SotM was magnificent (and I say that despite having done middle-of-the-pack myself). The combination of sliding scoring plus the multiplier allowed multiple approaches to potentially work really well. You could guess aggressively, racking up a really big raw score if you did well (more than making up for the penalties on the ones you missed) but it would hurt your multiplier. On the other hand, if you played cautiously, and did well, you'd likely end up with a much smaller raw score. But your multiplier would be much better and that would even things out. For example, bcf26 guessed conservatively and had a mediocre raw score of 77k. But bcf26 was also the only person to get a positive score on all 10 questions, earning a 2x multiplier and a respectable final score of 154k. On the other hand, Sheik guessed very aggressively, getting big scores on multiple questions and getting the 3rd best raw score of 125.5k. However, Sheik got 4 questions wrong, resulting in a 1.25x multiplier and a final score of 157k (after rounding). Two totally different approaches, evenly balanced in the scoring. The whole Sotm was like that. It was fun to score. Questions (I'm rounding here, but for the actual scoring, I took it to the dollar, or 1/1000th of a percent): 1. Infinity War DOM gross? $678.8M (everyone got either 40k or 50k for this) 2. Book Club DOM gross? $68.6M 3. Tag OW? $14.9M 4. Ocean's 8 2nd weekend drop%? -54.4% 5. Jumanji 2 DOM minus Solo WW? $11.6M 6. Ant-Man & The Wasp DOM divided by DP2 DOM? 67.2% (only 5 people didn't miss this) 7. Black Panther DOM minus $700M? $59,566 (the question that was the overall biggest negative to scores. More people got the Antman/DP2 one wrong, but the ones who got it right did well. A lot of people got this one wrong, too and no one did well on it. I got 1,000 for it, and I was the only one to get more than 500) 8. Number of weeks Hereditary spent in top 12? 4 9. $1.5B minus JW:FK WW total? $199.1M 10. I Feel Pretty DOM minus Life of the Party DOM? $4.1M (possibly the most boring question in terms of results. 2 people got it wrong, 15 people scored 500, and the other 4 scored 1k, 1k, 1k, and 3k. Meh.) Scores: Deja23 - 199k ZeeSoh - 186k chasmmi - 180k WrathOfHan - 175k Fancyarcher - 158k Jake Gittes - 158k Sheik - 157k bcf26 - 154k MrPink - 142k 24Lost - 134k Simionski 129k Panda - 128k baumer - 120k Wrath - 117k MovieMan89 - 108k That One Guy - 91k aabattery - 85k glassfairy - 71k JJ8 - 62k Premium George - 49k Infernus - 27k
  14. Great timing! I was going to start on that one in like an hour. If you’re doing more, let’s coordinate our efforts. I’ll probably do 7 next, unless you’re already working on it.
  15. Hmm. I got a slightly different answer than POTUS, perhaps I'm doing it wrong? Anyway, by my (possibly questionable) math, it wasn't literally a tie, it was just really, really close, depending on how many digits you go out to. Boxx93: 81.9067 TalismanRing: 81.8733
  16. SotM 4 - Weekenders Easy! Pick the top 3 weekends of the summer in order. Points for picking the right weekends, more points for getting them in the right spots, even more points for getting them all right, and penalties for getting things wrong. Also, you could predict the DOM gross for the weekend as well, but you didn't have to. Abstaining from the whole thing was worth 3k, failing to answer at all was a -5k penalty. I only listed scores for people who participated (so people who may have earned 0 points participated, they just ended up with a score of 0). As friendly as the scoring was for SotM 5, it was equally unfriendly here particularly if you decided to guess the gross totals. Spoiler alert: the squeamish might want to cover their eyes. Unless, of course, you got everything right... The top weekends were (including every weekend anyone guessed, just for completeness): 1. April 27 - Infinity War - 306M 2. June 22 - Incredibles 2 + JW:FK - 271M 3. June 15 - Incredibles 2 - 261M 4. May 18 - DP2 - 203M 5. July 6 - Antman&Wasp - 179M 6. May 25 - Solo + DP2 - 176M Guessing April 27, either June 15 or 22 (but not both), and May 25 was really popular. Depending on whether you got the spots right was the difference between 30k and 15k, which covered most respondents. For the few not in those two groups: you might have done *great*, you might have done tolerably, and there's a chance it went very badly indeed. Scoring: WrathOfHan - 150k (got everything right, in the right order, racking up maximum points. probably did not find this hard) Kalo - 30k Avatree - 30k Deja23 - 30k Fancyarcher - 30k Infernus - 30k MovieMan89 - 30k MrPink - 30k Panda - 30k Sheik - 30k Wrath - 30k ZeeSoh - 30k aabattery - 15k baumer - 15k captainwondyful - 15k druv10 - 15k grey ghost - 15k kayumanggi - 15k Spaghetti - 15k Telemachos - 15k Chewy - 3k SchumacherFTW - 3k Slambros - 3k That One Guy - 3k The Dark Alfred - 3k bcf26- 0k chasmmi - 0k glassfairy - 0k Simionski - 0k AndyLL - -50k Jake Gittes - -86k Empire - -91k Mike Hunt - -179k JJ8 - -195k Premium George - -221k
  17. More SotM scoring. SotM 5 - The Overs and the Unders 8 movies were given, and you had to guess how each would do relative to its BO.com predicted total. You were guessing if the actual total would be more/less/half/double what the prediction was. Almost everyone was on-board with the format. A couple people had issues but in one case it was easy to tell what they meant, in the other case they got the same score either way. The scoring was pretty generous, which was good because most of us sucked. Not a single correct Double or Half guess was made among the lot of us. Abstaining was 3k, but no one abstained. Not answering cost you a 5k penalty, though you could abstain on individual movies or questions. In the scores below, I'm only including the people who actually answered the questions. To review, the movies (along with: BO.com predict - Actual - correct answer, numbers in millions) were: Overboard - 39 - 50.3 - Higher Life of the Party - 54 - 52.8 - Lower Book Club - 25 - 68.6 - Double (or Higher) Action Point - 42.5 - 5 - Half (or Lower) Adrift - 34 - 31.4 - Lower Tag - 43 - 54.4 - Higher Show Dogs - 25 - 17.8 - Lower Breaking In - 34.8 - 46.5 - Higher Also, there were 10 questions. You got bonus points equal to the number of movies you guessed correctly in the previous part times the number of questions you got right in the second part times 1,000. The questions (along with correct, and sometimes surprising, answers) were: 1. Lowest Grossing Film - Action Point (24Lost was the only one to get this right) 2. Higher Grossing Film - Book Club (0 people got this right, not even Baumer who championed that movie from day 1) 3. Will any make top 20? Yes (Book Club, others might have gotten there, too, but I stopped looking once Book Club made it) 4. Will at least one Double its predict? Yes (Book Club) 5. Will at least one be Half or less its predict? Yes (Action Point) 6. Will the combined actuals be higher than the combined predicts? Yes (327M vs 297M) 7. In % terms, what will be best predict? Life of the Party (it BARELY beat Adrift. A surprisingly large number of people got this right) 8. In % terms, what will be worst predict? Action Point (Book Club missed by a lot, but not as much as Action Point. A lot of people got this one right, too) 9. Will at least 3 make more than 50M? Yes (4 did, in fact. Overboard, Life of the Party, Book Club, and Tag) 10. Will any have an OW under 5M? Yes (Action Point) Finally, the scores: Empire 80k MovieMan89 80k ZeeSoh 74k Wrath 70k Deja23 65k kayumanggi 65k bcf26 60k Kalo 60k 24Lost 53k Infernus 49k Premium George 48k That One Guy 44k chasmmi 40k Fancyarcher 40k grey ghost 39k Panda 37k baumer 36k JJ8 36k Simionski 33k Chewy 25k aabattery 21k MrPink 20k WrathOfHan 16k glassfairy 14k Jake Gittes 11k captainwondyful 5k Sheik 0
  18. I did pretty well on everything EXCEPT Searching which I both underestimated AND didn’t think would get previews. Be interesting to see if it can blow a big enough hole in my score to take me out all by itself.
  19. More fun with SotM's. SotM 7 looks like there's a real chance of fiddly numbers changing, so I'm skipping it for now and moving onto... SotM 6 - A tale of 4 blockbusters 4 movies: Avengers:IW, Deadpool 2, Solo, and JW:FK. 6 numbers: 200m, 150m, 100m, 75m, 50m 25m. You were supposed to pick which movies would have *a* weekend (didn't have to be OW) that was closest to each individual number. The movies were ranked on closeness to each number, so each movie was ranked 1st through 4th for each number. The closer your pick for each number was to being 1st, the more points you got. The farther away, the more points you lost. Big drops between OW and 2nd week resulted in some weird placements. Abstaining was worth 3k, and wasn't a bad choice this time around. Spoiler alert: Solo, on the other hand, was almost always a bad choice, as it was 4th for 3 of the 6 numbers, plus 3rd for another. Also, the fairly popular 75m - DP2, 50m - Solo, 25M - A:IW sequence was pretty damaging, as all 3 of those picks came in 4th. Here are the scores: That One Guy - 55k (I did this one first, and was like "Wow, I shouldn't have abstained." Turns out, that was the top score) Empire - 45k Infernus - 22k JJ8 - 22k aabattery - 12k captainwondyful - 12k 24Lost - 3k bcf26 - 3k Deja23 - 3k grey ghost - 3k MovieMan89 - 3k MrPink - 3k Slambros - 3k The Dark Alfred - 3k Wrath - 3k WrathOfHan - 3k Jake Gittes - -21k kayumanggi - -23k Premium George - -23k baumer - -25k Fancyarcher - -25k glassfairy - -25k chasmmi - -35k Sheik - -35k Avatree - -48k Simionski - -48k ZeeSoh - -60k Incidentally, I have the spreadsheets from all these SotM's. If anyone wants them, just let me know.
