  5. Yeah, Aquaman wasn't a great movie, but it was surprisingly family-driven in pretty much every possible way and a lot of fun (which DC badly needed). My most serious complaint was that the sound track was so loud and percussion-heavy it literally gave me a headache. Non-seriously, Mira has annoyed me more and more the more I’ve thought about it, but its fine.
  6. I just saw the Holmes/Watson trailer before Mortal Engines last weekend (seeing that was kind of a triumph of hope over experience. I mean, it *could* have been ok, it just wasn't), and I'm actually getting excited for it.

  8. Hah, yeah. That moment was my kids' favorite moment of the movie, by far. To me it barely even warranted mention compared to the Vader appearance at the end of Rogue One, but to them it was only a half-step below.
  9. Hah, I know that feeling. When my older daughter was a toddler, she *LIVED* for the "Jolly Holiday" sequence in the original. We watched it so many times the DVD actually died which is the only time I've ever seen that happen. Its been a while now, but by the end, it was like an academic study piece. Almost in spite of myself, I learned a ton about acting styles and scene transitions and what-not, just from watching those scenes over and over and over (literally hundreds of times). I really appreciate the film, but liking it or disliking it almost feels besides the point for me.
  10. They did indeed. For me, the characters and dialogue were even worse than expected and I wasn't expecting much. Good life rule is that expectations can never be low enough.
  11. Generally speaking, I'd agree, but Mortal Engines is not the hill to die on. I went into it both wanting to like it and with low expectations, and still ended up disappointed. Visuals and world-building are really good, but the characters and plot are just dire.
  12. Yeah, it going from potential Oscar-darling to dropping off the face of the Earth was unusually abrupt. The WoM I've heard is almost Mother!-grade "WTF?!?!" which is *really* not what I was expecting.
  13. Word of mouth has been so weird this winter. Different people whose opinions I trust have variously told me Roma is clearly best pic of the year and that its mediocre. Then my wife just saw The Favourite and she had a near Mother!-grade reaction to it. Just weird.
  14. Does India have much of a tradition of animation? I can't think of a single Indian-made animation film off the top of my head, but I admit I don't know Indian filmmaking that well outside the usual Bollywood stuff.
