  1. that's a good opening for the UK. £5.2M opening. httyd2 apparently opened to £7.8M but I cant remember if that had previews. certainly difficult to believe that the movie according to BOM only had 3x multi. edit: apparently it was a Thursday release, so assuming there were no other previews thats £7.8M four day. That is a bit of a drop.

  3. it is just a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 right? Is a "directors cut" version a different film from the theatrical cut? Is a TV cut a different movie?
  4. For sure, it seems to be very apparent that when you milk a series of loads of animated shows, you sacrifice some box office dollars. Kung Fu Panda for instance, at least worldwide kfp2 held well and increased from kfp1 by 50M. Between the second and third film, had 80 episodes of TV and two special shorts all featuring the main characters from the movies. And then kfp3 fell by 120M Madagascar on the other hand, it had the Penguins show. The show never featured the main characters but instead had minor supporting character from the movies. Over 100 episodes between Madagascar 2 and Madagascar 3. What happened? The 3rd movie increased, significantly. Look at other series like Ice Age and those movies all kept up tremendously on the previous instalment. (excluding the final one that bombed). Ice Age didnt have TV shows. though it had a few spin off specials featuring Scrat, but nothing with the main characters. If you look at that, an explanation could be -- the abundance of TV shows can help / not hinder the films at the box office, if the shows/specials are spin offs. Spin-offs keep you engaged with the brand, but not actually consuming the main thing youre there for, and holds something back for the film. If you put the main cast of characters in your TV show and continue it the same as the movies, then you are burning through audience demand and theres less reason to see it in the cinema when you see (as far as a kid is concerned) exactly the same thing at home. With Dragons, its a continuation of the films, with the main characters from the films. They even keep the voice actors. That being said, httyd2 had a big jump on the first one at BO, internationally. So it's difficult to tell. But yes, I do believe that the way you treat your franchise and how separately you keep the TV shows from the films, will affect the performance. On the other hand... it probably boosts the popularity of the TV shows when you have the main characters.
  5. Bear scene was good. watched the film with my parents and my mum was too scared by the bear that she couldn' watch the rest of the film.
  6. directors relationship with animated films is very different from that of live action films. directors names are often ignored with even the most popular and highest acclaimed animated films. Can you even name for me, for example the directors of the lion king? (the highest grossing animated film) can you correctly guess even how many credited directors for the lion king there are?
  7. Annihilation really didn't click with me. Had no idea wtf the point of the finale was. In interstellar it didn't particularly resonate to me but at least I understood what they were attempting. No clue with annihilation. I liked some of the production design tho.
  8. by weekend #4 the second film had grossed 11.85 million dollars by weekend #4 the third film has grossed 20.16 million dollars granted, this one has much weaker legs, but I'm guessing that is to do with holidays. regardless - I dont see how you can spin the numbers I just said as being "way less".
  9. it's really hard to say, all three have been really well received by the audience. my inclination is that it will drop again. Theres an inherent difficulty in animated/family sequels that have longish gaps between films. If a 10 year old boy loved the second one, then he's now 15 and a grumpy teenager who doesnt care for stupid kids films. The awkward teenage years get in the way. We've seen the same with Kung Fu Panda which had an identical 5 year gap. On the other hand, its been 10 years since the first one, so at that point you've skipped over the teenage years. Maybe I am talking out my arse but that's how I feel. I know 5 years ago when I was 17 i did not want to watch HTTYD. But now age 22 I am very happy to. It helps that March is clear of serious competition until 29th when Dumbo releases. Also think it helps greatly that it has a strong ending. Peaking at the end of a film gives a huge boon to reception and WOM.
  10. Is that one of those daft "rides" where your seat moves and you watch a video? I remember going on a star wars one at Disneyland maybe idk 10 years ago and it was shite.
  11. 3D really worth it do you reckon? I will probably watch it again. I dont like 3D generally speaking. Why should everything be made dark, especially from quite a colourful animation like this.
  12. I was talking about Chinese audiences.... Just a thought. Part of the reason Hollywood films make a lot of money in China is because of their budget - they get to see films of a scale that only Hollywood can make. But if they have their own nations films on the same scale, why would they bother seeing the latest hollywood movies? China audiences clearly prefer their own movies to American movies (in the same way American audiences way prefer American films to Chinese films). I mean theres a reason why wolf warrior got to $900M and no import film has ever reached even half of that. And so big HW films could start losing out hundreds of millions of dollars from china. This is why I think we are leveling off // plateuing with China grosses. as demand for big budget films increase, so will the supply from Chinese studios.
  13. Okay but what if Christopher Nolan has already filmed this in secret and has a super bowl trailer tonight.
  14. I see, thanks. Just a case of unlucky timing.
  15. Not sure why they didn't release it earlier. Would have likely won. And helped it's box office. If it's eligible for next year's awards it will have been forgotten about by then.
  16. you mean Hollywood animated films? just CGI ones? cause obviously theres shit ton of incredible looking 2D foreign movies and even a lot of 2D disney films.
  17. what a non article. It lists only four names, two of which have only been in one nolan movie. Why would they be considered his favourites...? especially as there are plenty other actors who've been in more than one Nolan film. - Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Anne Hathaway
  18. That -25% upside drop on superbowl weekend... Excellent.
  19. But... Showgirls is great. Thanks for the recommendation though now I'll watch it
