  1. If that was the reason why, then why are things like Hotel Transylvania 2 hits? There are loads of poor quality animated films that do well. There are films by Pixar that most people consider to be poor, but they're still hits. Also, no one knows what it's like opening weekend, so that wouldn't explain the low opening.
  2. I think it's down to marketing; can't see any other reason which could be the cause. It's not like people are tired of family films or Pixar films. Perhaps Disney just thought it is such an easy sell that they didn't need to spend too much on marketing? Also it doesn't help that none of the trailers or ads show what the film is about. I've had more than a few adults tell me they were hesitant to take their kids to see it because they didn't know what it's about, specifically referring to the trailers.
  3. There are well over 30 films released each month in the US and it does fine.
  4. Maybe you should just watch it and make your own mind up for yourself?
  5. Oh, fair enough. And I didn't mean it would/could harm the story - I more was wondering whether it was a deliberate narrative choice that Tarantino wants his audience 10 minutes to stop and collect their thoughts before proceeding, if that was important to the way he wants to tell the story.
  6. That's fair enough, Halba - after all, Star Wars is a full 14 minutes longer. Ethan, why are we agreeing with each other today? It's not right, it's NOT RIGHT GODAMNIT.
  7. Dunno about you but with a 3 hours film there's a good chance I will need the loo at some point. I mean, I'd rather watch the film as a whole but at the end of the day, just being practical, I know I'll need to go to the loo.
  8. I'm glad that it caused a reaction among kids and parents, but it's only doing the same as movies like THE LION KING or BAMBI, having genuinely scary or upsetting scenes. "Kids" films should absolutely be tackling difficult subject matter like death and separation; this isn't new, I just think some parents have become a little too accustomed to innocent (for better or worse) films like FROZEN or MINIONS. And yeah, this is top 5 Pixar (though I'm not a huge fan of much of Pixar's work)
  9. Huh, gotta disagree here. Thor is fucking hot as hell but Liam is the better actor, by a mile.
  10. Doesn't DUMBO have a trippy scene? And the upside-down JAWS/shark scene was neat (in fact, I rather enjoyed the whole evangelical religious pterodactyl thing as a whole) but again not anything new.
  11. Yep, if you thought the domestic numbers were an underperformance, the overseas numbers are an outright bomb.
  12. It opened to like $29M in 92 markets which is pretty much the whole world. It's not making 150M OS let alone 500M. Tbh I wouldn't call it bold. Having oddball anthropomorphic animals in family films is nothing new. I don't consider the movie risky or even particularly innovative. Toy Story, Inside Out, particularly WALLE and even Cars are more "boundary-pushing" in my opinion. I just think it is a really masterfully told story, using visual and aural cues to trigger the emotional attachment you've developed to the characters and their situations. The strong child acting, the way it uses different textures and settings to push the story along, and even just the quality of the animation and score... it all culminates to a simple but beautifully made film.
  13. What about if it went into very limited release last year but then general release this year?
  14. Are there rules regarding which films are eligible? In terms of release dates.
  15. This movie is really confusing me. The performances are extraordinary. The way the film presents its characters and their relationship is wonderful. It looks astonishing, and using costumes to convey story is a successful neat trick. Everything about it is great... but... I didn't really like it. I have no idea why, I just didn't. It's totally baffling to me as it's so strange to see a film which I can see has so many strengths, but not enjoy it. I really can't pinpoint why. Maybe because I had been in the cinema for 12 hours by the time I watched it and I was just tired? I may try watch it again to see if I can solve my conundrum.
  16. Finally caught this today. Style>>>>>>>substance, it is pretty shallow, but entertaining enough way of spending 2 hours.
