  1. Is there a chance of Zootopia outgrossing BvS domestically? Next weekend, Zootopia could have higher # than BvS if BvS drops 70% (15.6) AND Zootopia drops 20% (16)
  2. I was hoping it could at least beat Iron Man 3, but 166 is still an excellent number. Question - Will any future DC movies be able to surpass $166 million opening? Personally I hardly see that happening.
  3. No BvS actual yet? Maybe executives are having emergency meeting to decide whether to fudge the number or not. The meeting probably cost $7.43 million
  4. Hateful Eight seems to have done fine considering: * run time. * violence (R-rating) * piracy/leak * western genre (it's a hard sell)
  5. It took 19 years for a non-Cameron film to pass Titanic. Wow. Congrats to Star Wars. How do the actual admission numbers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens compare to that of Titanic though? BOM has Titanic at 135 million and Star Wars: The Force Awakens at 80 million. Are these somewhat accurate numbers (+/- 5 millions error at most)?
  6. Total for Monday + Tuesday + Wednesday = $115 million? Quite funny to think that was the record breaking number for opening weekend in 2002.
  7. 110 is my guess. I guess by the end of next weekend, total should be around 450 or so.
  8. I was a doubter who predicted $127million opening weekend. Well, now it all makes sense. Nostalgia - What more can I say? Main plot kept secret - There were lots of mysteries surrounding the movie's plots and characters. This sure helped build anticipation. Millennials introduced to Star Wars universe - This is a big one. Updating the franchise to suit millennials' interests and tastes made huge contributions. The movie seemed familiar but felt very new and contemporary in the trailers. Furthermore, Disney perfectly calculated to have a female and black as lead characters. Franchise kept up - Another huge factor. The franchise was not left in the vacuum after prequels. Over the years, Star Wars-themed games, books/comics, animated series, etc. were released. This not only kept the fans involved in the franchise, but also introduced Star Wars to new generation. Months of news coverages - These days, we don't have to find the news. News comes to us in the form of Twitter feeds and FB posts. At least once a month in 2015, there have been feeds/posts about Star Wars news. This probably helped the millennials get interested in the franchise. That being said, I am still surprised by the movie's record opening. Only several people around me (FB friends, real friends, uni friends, friends' friends, Twitter followers, etc.) were interested in the movie. Not "excited", but only interested. Furthermore, these people didn't even see prequels in the theater (most were in high school when Episode 2 and Episode 3 came out) Even my friends' parents were somewhat skeptical about new Star Wars movie. At this moment, I am still rounding up who saw the movie during the weekend, but it turns out quite a number of people actually went to see it. Heck, even people who NEVER saw any other Star Wars movies went to see Force Awakens. Congrats to Star Wars! Well deserving champion of the galaxy
  9. MJ2 seems like it will reach 250 soon. Nice.
  10. Yay! #1 for four straight weekends for Hunger Games. I don't care for the movie though. Probably never gonna see it, but I liked this franchise enough (until Catching Fire) to want to see the franchise go out with a bang though it won't reach $300mil.
  11. I want Mockingjay 2 to take #1 4th time. I haven't even seen the movie though...
  12. Yeah, a 2 year wait, a huge marketing campaign, and lack of split and I would've believed in a 200M OW Even as one film theoretically aided by Lionsgate's marketing blitz, J Law's another Oscar win, unfortunate event to a cast member, addition of 3D premium etc, I doubt the film would have done any more than $160 OW. Why? I don't know. For me, two Hunger Games movies were enough... It is not a world/universe that I would love to see more of
  13. I wouldn't say J Law's luster is wearing off. She was a top-billed actress in X Men Days of Future Past. However, she hasn't had variation in her roles. After Catching Fire, her exposure to the general movie-going audiences was Mockingjay movies and that X Men movie. American Hustle? She was barely in the movie. And the other movie with Bradley Cooper bombed. It could be tiresome to see the same actress do the same thing again and again every year. I think it could have a little bit if she had released a, for example, comedy film between Hunger Games movies.
  14. Hunger Games 1: the premise seemed quite appealing to most demographics. Even my mom went to see it... Other than that, I have no idea why it became a huge hit... Catching Fire: momentum from first movie + J Law's Oscar win. Mockingjay movies: it did not add anything too special to the premise other than "game is over." And from what I know, the book itself is not well-received by fans...
  15. Catching Fire was heavily aided by Jennifer Lawrence's Oscar win. I doubt Mockingjay as one film could have outperformed what Catching Fire achieved. However.... two Mockingjay movies will have combined total gross of approximately $600mil DOM. Wise decision on the studio's part
  16. Disappointing for me since I was hoping for 160-170. But I can't argue with the achievement that the entire franchise, or all 4 films, opened above $100+ million. That is quite incredible.
  17. Gattaca makes me cry. Even thinking about the movie makes me cry Make Way For Tomorrow also made me cry as well
  18. Was hoping the actual for Martian would go up... If it had IMAX, it surely would have taken the record
  19. Excited to see whether Martian can take October record... If that's the case, what a year! 6 months' records (Jan, Feb, Apr, June, Sept, Oct) broken in a single year! What's astonishing is that more records can be broken in the remaining 2 months
