However, its two-week total is higher than every domestic live-action film ever, thanks to the Friday start and the release being in the heart of Summer. The next week weeks will be very strong, especially when Obon Festival begins, and it's still very much on course to reach ¥8 billion ($70 million+) and become a #1 contender of 2018. >Mission: Impossible - Fallout has to settle for a second place debut, but its opening weekend is 11% higher than both Rogue Nation and Ghost Protocol. The sixth-entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise sold an impressive 450,315 admissions over the weekend frame across 638 screens. Since opening on Friday, its 3-day admissions reached 619,507 admissions -- 14% above Rogue Nation's 3-day admissions. The Mission: Impossible series continues to be one of the most consistent and successful franchises, and Fallout will very likely exceed the ¥5 billion (~$45 million) blockbuster milestone once again. >Incredibles 2 did end up underwhelming a bit, coming in slightly below the standard opening for a Pixar film in the market. The family superhero flick sold 331,697 admissions over the weekend frame on 432 screens. However, the film opened ahead of the weekend last Wednesday, and brought its 5-day admissions up to 750,000. It's still difficult to project where it's headed thanks to the rare Wednesday release, and its so-so weekend, but it should at least reach the ¥4 billion (~$35 million) milestone. >My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, for some reason, hasn't had its weekend frame figures released yet, so its weekend gross above is a placeholder until it's released (I'll also be using an estimated number of admissions for the weekend frame until that's released, too). Since opening on Friday, though, the original animated film based on the popular manga/anime sold an impressive 401,542 admissions. The first one-million moviegoers are receiving a manga tie-in a part of a giveaway, so 40.2% of those have been handed out after three days. >Kamen Rider Build: Be the One debuts in fifth place, selling 213,166 admissions over the weekend across 297 screens. The opening is a little above the typical Kamen Rider release in recent years, and topped last August's release by 4%. These films are always very frontloaded, holiday period coming up or not, and it'll probably just barely get above the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone. >One Cut of the Dead makes a very surprising appearance in the tenth place position. The critically acclaimed film had been playing at just 2 locations since opening in June, and due to regular sell-outs for weeks, expanded to 9 locations this weekend and did exceptionally well. There are now plans to expand it further following its ranking in the top 10, so this may not be the last time we'll see it charting. The aggregated top 10 ended up exceeding ¥3 billion, making it just the sixteenth weekend to do so since 1998 (chart edited a few posts up), but did ultimately come in lower than expected due to a couple openers debut a little lower than expected, and most of the holdovers experiencing harsh drops. We could see the day more than double Monday's estimates. A lot of urban theaters are close to achieving half-capacity for the whole day and it's only 4AM. Every Wednesday is Ladies' Day (women get discount tickets), but it's also the first of the month (national discount day, so everyone gets discounts), and we're in the middle of Summer. To take advantage of this day, Incredibles 2 and Sensei Kunshun are opening tomorrow ahead of the weekend. Then on Friday, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, and the latest Kamen Rider open. However... I don't believe any of the new films are going to take the #1 spot away from Code Blue. Incredibles 2 has very good pre-sales ahead of its first day, but Code Blue is beating it handily; and Mission Impossible 6 is very unlikely to beat it over the weekend. Wednesday (08/01)¥400 million ($3.6 million), 0, ¥2.490 billion ($22.4 million), Code Blue (Day 6)¥255 million ($2.3 million), 0, ¥255.0 million ($2.3 million), Incredibles 2 (NEW)¥155 million ($1.4 million), +02%, ¥5.305 billion ($47.3 million), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Day 20)¥85 million ($760,000), -01%, ¥1.390 billion ($12.6 million), Mirai of the Future (Day 13)¥80 million ($715,000), 0, ¥80.00 million ($715,000), Sensei Kunshun (NEW)¥65 million ($580,000), -10%, ¥1.815 billion ($16.3 million), Pokemon: Everyone's Story (Day 20)¥18 million ($160,000), 0, ¥18.00 million ($160,000), Blue Summer (NEW)¥17 million ($150,000), -31%, ¥404.0 million ($3.6 million), Bleach (Day 13)¥15 million ($135,000), -22%, ¥2.036 billion ($18.4 million), Solo: A Star Wars Story (Day 34)¥12 million ($110,000), -34%, ¥4.239 billion ($38.3 million), Shoplifters (Day 55) __________¥2 million ($20,000), -65%, ¥8.686 billion ($79.3 million), Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Day 111)% changes versus same day last week.Wednesday wasn't quite as strong as I was anticipating, but it was still strong as we get closer to Obon Festival in less than two weeks.Code Blue is showing no signs of frontloading that TV drama adaptations sometimes experience, and is definitely going to be a contender for the 2018 yearly crown now. I still believe Fuji TV's "expected" ¥10 billion total is too high, but ¥8/9 billion ($70-80 million+) is currently realistic.Incredibles 2 had a good first day, but I was expecting a bit more. There's really no good comparisons to other Disney/Pixar films because of the Wednesday release, so we'll have to watch how it performs on a day-to-day basis before making any good comparisons. If anything, its first day likely suggests it's not going to breakout, really, and will probably finish around the norm of a Pixar film -- ¥4/5 billion ($40/50 million). The first film grossed ¥5.26 billion, so if it can match/exceed that, it'd be a success... but it's very clear that Japanese audiences just aren't accepting of Pixar sequels. Aside from Toy Story 3, which benefited from Pixar establishing itself after the release of the first two Toy Story films, every Pixar sequel has dropped from its predecessor in the market. Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer lost its biggest amount of theaters yet on Wednesday, and it definitely felt the blow. I'll continue to track it for as long as I can, though, since it's the film Jurassic World 2 and Code Blue need to beat first, before possibly one another, to win the 2018 yearly crown.

Despite a typhoon affecting western Japan over the weekend, the film still sold an outstanding 810,918 admissions over the weekend frame across 439 screens, and sold 1,164,744 admissions since opening on Friday. Fuji TV announced that they expect the film to reach the ¥10 billion ($90 million) uber-blockbuster milestone, but projections from studios and TV stations are often very optimistic and on the very high-end of expectations for marketing purposes. However, they may not be far off the mark because of how well it did in the face of a big storm, and Monday's estimate is very impressive. It will probably finish around ¥8 billion ($70 million), but it could go a bit higher and enter the race against Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom for the 2018 Yearly Crown. Also, Code Blue makes the fourth film to debut above ¥1 billion in only seven months (most years have one, maybe two films do it in a year), a record number this decade and the most in such a short amount of time since the Hollywood blockbuster boon of 2002-2005. >Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom falls to second place, but still delivered an excellent third weekend hold, and is now trailing its predecessor by 17% (down from 20% last week) after three weeks in release. It will likely continue to gain on the first film since it has Obon Festival in two weeks, so a total of ¥9 billion ($80 million) is looking very good right now, which should be enough for it to win the 2018 Yearly Crown, though it's not certain yet. >Mirai of the Future held well in its second weekend, though did drop slightly more than Hosoda's Wolf Children (2012), 28% versus 24%. Of course, it's possible the typhoon may have impact it a bit. Its two-week total, however, is up 16% compared to Wolf Children, so I'd say it's aiming for a total between ¥3.5-4.0 billion ($30-35 million+). I know that's less than Wolf Children (¥4.22 billion), but I think the mixed-reception of Mirai will slow it down in the coming weeks. >Pokemon: Everyone's Story also held well, and continues to almost mirror last year's film day-to-day so far. It opened 3% behind last year's film, and its third-week total is trailing by just 4%. I don't really see why it'll suddenly change course, so I'd say a total over ¥3 billion is locked, and it should get very close to ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+).

Kurun and the Star of Life (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) WK4 10 (08) ¥16,021,200 ($144,000), -42%, ¥8,632,311,900 ($78.9 million), Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Toho) WK15>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom enjoys a strong second weekend atop the box-office, selling an additional 486,000 admissions over its second weekend, bringing its 10-day admissions above 2.4 million. It has fallen behind its predecessor, despite the much larger debut, but the difference in release dates makes it very difficult to accurately compare the two films on any level, really. Fallen Kingdom is doing very, very well, though, and is on track to reach the ¥8 billion ($70 million) milestone, and if the boost it receives from Obon Festival in three weeks is big enough, it could approach the ¥9 billion ($80 million) milestone. >Mirai of the Future, the latest animated-family adventure from acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda, settles for second place, selling a solid 295,828 admissions over the weekend frame across 456 screens, and an impressive 378,022 admissions since Friday. Its opening is 10% higher than Hosoda's Wolf Children which opened on this exact weekend 6 years ago, but did trail his previous film, The Boy and the Beast, by 40% (or 24% if Friday is taken into consideration). Overall, this is a good debut -- comparable to most other high-profile original anime films (excluding Miyazaki films) -- but not the breakout that may have been possible thanks to Hosoda and Studio Chizu's growing popularity. Legs this time of year are consistently strong for original animated films, so expect a total perhaps around ¥3.5 billion ($30 million+), but ¥4 billion ($35 million) is doable, as well. >Pokemon: Everyone's Story ends up falling slightly higher than the average Pokemon film in its second weekend, but its two-week total is only about 5% behind last year's film . It'll likely rebound as we get deeper into Summer, as the franchise typically does, and is still on track for ¥3-3.5 billion ($30 million+). >Bleach, the live-action adaptation of the popular 2000's manga/anime, bombs as expected, only selling 99,122 admissions over the weekend frame on 329 screens, and 132,525 admissions since Friday. It certainly wasn't expected to do very well, and it came in a bit above estimates, but opening to about half of what the live-action adaptations Fullmetal Alchemist and Tokyo Ghoul did last year is very disappointing. Simply put, this film came out way too late and isn't going to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone. >Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer achieved its fifteenth-consecutive week in the Top 10! It's benefited a lot in the past two weeks from the lack of openers -- and a film earning less than ¥20 million in the tenth place position is very low, especially for this time of year -- but a fifteenth weekend in the Top 10 is still a fifteenth weekend in the Top 10, and is incredibly impressive, regardless. The Summer Box-Office, so far, has been a little lackluster, but it's primarily due to studios putting more films in August this year. The first two weekends of August are very crowded, and contain several potential blockbuster releases, so expect a much more exciting Top 10 in a few weeks.

The sequel to Jurassic World, and the fifth entry in the overall series, dominated the box-office, becoming the fastest film since 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 and 2014's Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! to reach the ¥2 billion milestone in just four days. By comparison, it took Jurassic World seven days to reach the same milestone. Jurassic World 2 sold an incredible 833,190 admissions over the weekend frame across 1,002 screens (second highest screen count in modern history), and brought its 4-day admissions up to an astounding 1,453,273. This entry won't have nearly as strong of legs as its predecessor due to the release date difference of the two films, but even a standard performance for a blockbuster this time of year will easily get it to the ¥8 billion ($70 million) milestone, and it could certainly rival the first film with a total of ¥9 billion ($80 million), as well. It has very likely won the Summer Crown already, and will be in the running for the Yearly Crown. Pokemon: Everyone's Story performed very well, selling 440,242 admissions over the weekend frame on 370 screens, which bested last year's reboot of the animated film franchise by 0.9%. Its 4-day admissions reached an excellent 733,488. However, it did come in slightly lower in revenue, trailing last year's film by just 3.1%. This is very encouraging because a couple years back, the franchise was in a downward spiral. A total between ¥3-3.5 billion ($30 million+) is likely. The new strategy of releasing original Pokemon films that aren't apart of the TV anime definitely appears to have brought back a lot of fans to the theaters. Solo: A Star Wars Story did end up falling a bit harshly in its third weekend due to severe screen/showtime & premium format cuts), after all, and while it's still not performing particularly well, I believe total around ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) is likely. Certainly not good, but respectable given its performance elsewhere.Shoplifters continues its incredible run, and is going to exceed the ¥4 billion milestone very soon. Hirokazu Kore-eda's hit is now targeting a total over ¥4.5 billion ($40 million+).Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer continues to remain in the Top 10, now achieving a remarkable fourteenth-consecutive week there! I still believe it has the advantage of winning the Yearly Crown, especially now that it's still in the Top 10 with Summer beginning, but it'll be in for a close race now with Jurassic World 2. 2018 - Top Grossing FilmsGross ¥ ($) / Admissions [Days In Release] - Film (Distributor)¥10 billion ↨¥8.60 billion ($78.7 million) / 6.58 million [95] - Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Toho)¥7.50 billion ($66.2 million) / 5.05 million [E] - Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Disney)¥5.30 billion ($49.4 million) / 4.63 million [E] - Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island (Toho)¥5.13 billion ($47.8 million) / 3.67 million [E] - The Greatest Showman (Fox)¥5 billion ↨¥4.93 billion ($46.0 million) / 3.93 million [E] - Coco (Disney)¥3.88 billion ($35.1 million) / 3.17 million [39] - Shoplifters (Gaga)¥3.70 billion ($33.8 million) / 2.48 million [E] - Avengers: Infinity War (Disney)¥3.41 billion ($31.7 million) / 2.92 million [E] - The Boss Baby (Toho-Towa)¥3.20 billion ($28.5 million) / 2.54 million [F] - Destiny: The Tale of Kakamura (Toho)¥3 billion ↨¥2.80 billion ($25.0 million) / 2.23 million [F] - The 8-Year Engagement (Shochiku)¥2.50 billion ($22.8 million) / 1.53 million [E] - Ready Player One (Warner Bros.)¥2.11 billion ($18.7 million) / 1.45 million [04] - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Toho-Towa)¥2.01 billion ($18.0 million) / 1.81 million [F] - Yo-Kai Watch: Shadowside - Resurrection of the Demon King (Toho)¥2 billion ↨¥1.80 billion ($16.4 million) / 1.53 million [E] - Crayon Shin-chan: Kung-Fu Boys Ramen Rebellion (Toho)¥1.78 billion ($16.2 million) / 1.18 million [46] - Deadpool 2 (Fox)¥1.70 billion ($15.3 million) / 1.22 million [F] - Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Fox)¥1.69 billion ($15.0 million) / 1.22 million [18] - Solo: A Star Wars Story (Disney)¥1.64 billion ($15.3 million) / 1.41 million [E] - Chihayafuru: Conclusion (Toho)¥1.62 billion ($14.8 million) / 1.35 million [E] - Legend of the Demon Cat (Toho/Kadokawa)¥1.62 billion ($14.5 million) / 1.28 million [F] - Murder on the Orient Express (Fox)¥1.56 billion ($14.2 million) / 1.25 million [E] - The Crimes That Bind (Toho)¥1.53 billion ($13.6 million) / 1.24 million [31] - Recall (Shochiku)¥1.52 billion ($14.2 million) / 1.01 million [E] - Black Panther (Disney)¥1.35 billion ($12.2 million) / 1.04 million [E] - Laplace's Witch (Toho)¥1.26 billion ($11.3 million) / 1.06 million [E] - Kamen Hensei Generations FINAL: Build & Ex-Aid With Legend Riders (Toei)¥1.23 billion ($11.2 million) / 0.90 million [E] - Geostorm (Warner Bros.)¥1.21 billion ($11.0 million) / 0.83 million [E] - Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Sony)¥1.20 billion ($11.0 million) / 0.97 million [E] - Sakura: Guardian in the North (Toei)¥1.20 billion ($11.0 million) / 0.97 million [45] - 50 First Kisses (Sony)¥1.12 billion ($10.0 million) / 0.87 million [E] - Fullmetal Alchemist (Warner Bros.)¥1.11 billion ($9.9 million) / 0.89 million [E] - Peter Rabbit (Sony)¥1.01 billion ($9.5 million) / 0.79 million [E] - Tonight, at the Movies (Warner Bros.)¥1 billion ↑Legend:¥10 billion+ (Uber-Blockbuster) / ¥5 billion+ (Blockbuster) / ¥3 billion+ (Hit) / ¥2 billion+ (Respectable) / ¥1 billion+ (Commercial Success)[/quote]
  15. NEW SKYSCRAPER Universal Johnson is one of the biggest draws at the international box office, but as Anthony D’Alessandro has reported, there is sentiment domestically — which in this case also translates to overseas — that, among other issues, Skyscraper‘s Die Hard redux premise wasn’t enough to excite moviegoers (in a year when they’ve already had a big piece of The Rock), and there’s a bevy of family competition. Universal/Legendary’s Skyscraper scaled $40.4M in its opening at the international box office this weekend. Across 57 markets, starts were mixed and in most cases lower than recent Dwayne Johnson action comps. There were No. 1 debuts in 17 offshore hubs including Germany, the Netherlands, Malaysia, the UAE and Taiwan, but overall it’s a disappointment. The global take through Sunday is $65.9M. The movie is coming in lower versus comps like Rampage and San Andreas in most markets, and has seen soft numbers in Latin America in what is a competitive landscape with family films exerting force (Brazil and Argentina, for example, gave Skyscraper No. 4 bows). The strongest plays are in Asia and the Middle East, but Skyscraper may not see much improvement in China when it bows there next weekend. The movie scored a July 20 release date amid the summer blackout, and while Johnson has a base in the Middle Kingdom, local films have been performing very strongly. The top offshore Skyscraper market was Korea, coming in No. 2 behind the second frame of Ant-Man And The Wasp, with $4.67M at 435 locations. It’s tracking locally at 14% below this year’s Johnson actioner Rampage and 36% below San Andreas. Mexico also was a No. 2 bow, this time behind HT3, with $3.7M at 817 (-33% on Rampage/-61% on San Andreas). Russia further scaled to No. 2 with $2.62M at 1,363 (-10% on Rampage/-38% San Andreas). Australia ($2.38M) came in at No. 4 but on par with San Andreas and 6% above Rampage. The UK brought a No. 2 start ($2.38M) behind the dominant Incredibles 2 and well below the Johnson comps. Asia is a mixed bag with Indonesia bowing to $2.14M at 250 sites, above San Andreas, but below Rampage. Taiwan scored No. 1 and is above Rampage but below SA. Malaysia kicked off at No. 1 with $1.53M but still below the comps. Hong Kong ($1.43M) is up on Rampage and below San Andreas). The global junket for Skyscraper was held in Hong Kong July 5-7 including an interview conducted on land, sea and sky with Johnson, Neve Campbell, McKenna Roberts, Noah Taylor and director Rawson Marshall Thurber. In Vietnam, the movie was No. 1 with $615M at 156 dates. That’s 77% above San Andreas and scored Johnson his 2nd biggest opening day behind Rampage. In other plays, Germany was a No. 1 start with $1.3M at 531, albeit below Rampageand SA; the Netherlands was also No. 1 with the best opening day for an original Johnson movie and tracking above SA. The UAE scored the 5th biggest Universal opening weekend ever at $1.63M. And in Egypt, Skyscraper is U’s 3rd best opening ever and tracking over the comps. China and Italy open next weekend, Japan is in September.
  16. JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM Universal Pictures Thrashing into Japan, Universal/Amblin’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom set a new record. With a $12.7M opening it is Universal’s best ever, and the top start for 2018. The Japan start includes $1M from only 30 screens. The full overseas weekend was $26.7M in 68 markets for $771.4M internationally and $1,134.7M worldwide. The top holds were in Germany (-24%/26.2M), Australia (-31%/$23M cume), Mexico (-58%/$32.2M) and the UK (-41%/$51.2M). China has given JWFK an extended release and the cume there is now $256.1M.
  17. INCREDIBLES 2 Disney The return of Disney/Pixar’s superhero family had a super start in the UK this weekend with $12.1M to become the 2nd best opening for a Disney Animation/Pixar movie ever behind only Toy Story 3 and the highest Disney Animation/Pixar non-holiday opening. The staggered international release timed the UK to just ahead of summer break. Elsewhere, Poland also delivered the second highest ever Disney Animation/Pixar opening with $1.4M ($1.7M including previews). The full weekend overseas, where there are many markets to come, was worth $33.3M in 43 so far. The offshore cume is $321.1M for $856.9M global. Holds were good in several plays while the sequel has become the highest grossing Pixar release ever in Thailand, joining the rest of South East Asia in setting that record (outside China). It is also the No. 1 Disney Animation/Pixar release of all time in Colombia, Central America, Trinidad and Uruguay as well as the No. 2 Disney Animation/Pixar release of all-time across the Latin America region. The top markets to date are China ($51.5M), Mexico ($36M), Australia ($29.5M), Brazil ($23.1M) and (World Cup champion) France ($17.7M). Next weekend adds Korea and Hong Kong.
