  1. Let me switch tracks to the most egregious recent example, though it's TV not film. There was a lot of complaining over the how the Battle of Winterfell for Game of Thrones was presented. Many of the responses to the complaints rightly pointed out compression issues on delivery. But even when taking that into account, it was just a really dark scene where it was exceedingly hard to make out what was going on even when presented in the best possible way as folks who had optimal TV sets and content delivery with very little compression still had a very hard time watching the scene. It might be by design... But just because it is doesn't make it a good choice. A DP can choose to light scenes in certain ways as an artistic choice. That doesn't mean that artistic choice will lead to a good viewing experience even under optimal conditions. ==== But I feel this is a side point (though an important one). On the whole, I do agree with you that theaters are cutting corners far too much. I think it is degrading the theater experience. And I certainly think theaters should be doing a better job on this front, though with cost pressure mounting on them, don't ask me what's the best way for them to actually do it.
  2. I'm saying they're two different issues that can both result in a poor viewing experience. That's not victim-blaming, that's saying there's two different perps.
  3. Remember all the complaints about how dark Solo was? Lot of that was sub-standard projectors. Other films have been hit with that as well. Sure, cinematographers have probably gotten a bit too lax at times with how they handle dark scenes (see that famous quote about the Battle of Helms Deep as the counterexample about how to light dark scenes "correctly"), but some theaters sure aren't helping matters.
  4. I believe the idea is to pin a thread that contains links to all of the clubs in it. So there'd only be the one thread. Still a bit of a hassle to constantly pin/unpin threads on a weekly basis, though. The other idea of editing the first post of a movie discussion thread to contain links also has some merit, I'll admit. But then how many people check out the first page of a thread once it really gets going?
  5. Not exactly taking off in the land of tomatoes... At T-2 Maleficent 2 has now sold 696 tickets region wide (+169 last two days) 38.99% of Pika Pika (2.22m) [-0.19m from last check] 36.13% of Aladdin (2.53m) [-0.01m from last check] 24.69% of It 2 (2.59m) [-0.16m from last check] the lolcheck is still lol-ish as it is dropping like a rock: 66.92% of H&S (3.88m) [-0.84m from last check] TS4 is at 2.21m (-0.06m) and TLK is at 2.34m (-0.02m) Still converging on 2.25m to 2.5m it appears. Just not seeing much of a sign of 3m out of Sacramento. Could just be doing poorly here. Also could have the wrong comps. Also could be really walkup based, as if it gets a good percentage of walkups, it'll gain on other films in a hurry. Or it's just destined for 2.5m more or less. Just have to see. (Won't do a check tomorrow. Might do one on Thr night if I remember/feel like it)
  6. Grant Brisbee, unsurprisingly, has some words about that. (Also, goddamn, Calvin Griffith was a hard core Yawkey-level racist )
  7. Congrats to @Jayhawk!!! Been a long time coming, so enjoy it! 👍
  8. Starting to think this isn't the Cards year. @Jayhawk
  9. @MrPink (one three run win later) Feeling better?
  10. It wasn't that bad with Captain Marvel. Most irritating thing, really, was dealing with the "why were there hardly any sales today" concerns when it was weeks away from premiering. I absolutely expect some very dry spells after the initial rush, pending the occasional spike when various promotions hit. One reason I'm glad I tracked all 59 days of CM (starting at T-58) is I'll have a near direct one-for-one comp, which is always helpful. TROS should (*knocks on imitation wood desk*) be an order or two magnitude greater, but it'll still have the same relative peaks and valleys, I suspect. === If tickets do drop around 5pm to 6pm PDT next Monday (ahead of the trailer as ticketing sites usually jump the gun slightly), I won't report an official four hour total. Instead, I'll roll it in to the next day's total as I did for both Captain Marvel and Solo as comping four or five hours of sales versus a near full day of sales is silly. Probably go ahead and make a four/five hour unofficial update though.
  11. Dude, that's like a half an hour later cross-post. Can't get upset at that! Not my fault you didn't check the next page.
  12. Touchstone Pictures was created for more than one reason, yes.
  13. According to reddit showtimes are starting to pop up for TROS. Allegedly Cinemark. Looks to be 5pm Opening Night Fan Event and 6pm previews, again according to the thread. Can't independently verify it though. So, Endgame playbook it seems. At least when it comes to showtimes.
  14. Up to 50 or so over at RT with a 5.49/10. Top Critics is 33 (5.35/10), unfortunately. Not great, but not nearly as bad as the first batch of reviews suggested. Probably land in the 40s somewhere if that x/10 score is any indication. But still time for it to maybe stabilize in the 50s. So right around the first one. Might be good enough for fence sitters. Doesn't look to be a disastrous RT score. Yet at least.
  15. Psssst. MrPink is an Astros fan. === Buck up, @MrPink. According to the latest 538 odds, the 'stros are down to 29% chance of winning: You get to embrace the underdog status you are clearly yearning for!!!!
  16. Be thankful, as you probably are every day, that you're not a Cards fan?
