  1. The actual cool thing to do would be to add a Best Film That Made Under $10m category. That would cause them to actually watch/recognize/promote some good under-the-radar stuff.
  2. That's a weird example given that a lightweight romantic comedy that happens to be about Shakespeare would seem much less likely to win BP than a gritty Spielberg WW2 drama. Also they both made lots of money. And popular movies still get nominated. The number of big hits that get snubbed is much lower than of those that get recognition (Get Out, Dunkirk, Mad Max, The Martian, Gravity, The Help, Inception, half of the 2012 nominees, etc)
  3. I feel like they're playing right into the hands of those who accuse them of being snobby and elitist. And capitulating (even more) before mediocrity for the sake of ratings.
  4. At least people still care enough to part with one of their 25 daily reactions I guess. Unless they have a gold account
  5. And? From everything I've heard Travolta is essentially forced to remain in the cult, while Cruise is best friends with Miscavige and actively exercises the power given to him. There is a difference.
  6. Even more impressive for Fallout considering how many tentpoles/sequels this summer - well-received, too - had to drop in the vicinity of 60% before course-correcting.
  7. The Martian is the last really strong movie with Chastain in it I can recall. And performance-wise I think she's still never topped her work in Take Shelter.
  8. Except for The Mendelsohn I remember Lily James in Darkest Hour cause it pretty much begins with the obligatory biopic scene where we learn that the Important Historical Figure in question sometimes didn't have his pants on, and she's there as an audience surrogate being all shocked about it. Oh, and she also teaches him about the V sign. I think.
  9. I was just taking the piss out of Scholar's quoted comment above. Quaritch is the best character in Avatar tbf, but for me still not top 100 material
  10. Does Won't You Be My Neighbor count as a breakout? Being outside of America I never got too deep into the entire MoviePass situation but I get the impression it's demonstrated that people are willing to go out and watch more movies in theaters, but something needs to be done about the cost esp. when it comes to smaller films.
  11. Xenophobic military asshole who goes to another planet and starts a war with its peaceful inhabitants Great character. Can really relate
  12. Between the two I just have a preference for Cox, y'know? And that movie does everything right when it comes to Cox; the thing about Cox is that you shouldn't get more than you can handle, and Mann, being Mann, of course understands how to give you just enough of a taste of Cox to leave you satisfied but still wanting more. (Serious answer: Cox's Lecter feels closer to someone who could exist in real life, and for that I find him more dusturbing, plus I enjoy his brusque energy more than Hopkins' cultured-monster routine. Also for the purposes of this list Hopkins' Lecter would presumably count as a franchise character, and while I like him in SOTL, he becomes a cartoon after that movie. Cox really does benefit from appearing for just a few minutes and then haunting the rest of the movie.)
  13. I saw Sunshine Cleaning way back when. Great coup on getting Adams and Blunt at that exact stage of their careers but it's a pretty basic Sundance dramedy otherwise

  15. He'll probably get around to it by next spring.
  16. Oh for the time when it still looked like Sony Classics wouldn't screw up CMBYN's run
