  2. Life Is a Cabaret so high is a pleasant surprise. Watched it again and goddamn, what a performance. Into the West played in ROTK during the credits, which were those portraits of the actors.
  3. Fuck, I still remember Shay's insanity around the time POP came out. Seeing that kinda shit for the first time leaves a mark on you.
  4. Actually think I discovered BOM exactly 10 years ago, I'm pretty sure it was right around when Superman Returns opened and then DMC killed all the records. Though I had first started following the numbers on IMDb and Comingsoon more than a year earlier when ROTS came out.
  5. Airbender had a $17m Thursday, without that its multiplier was about 2.8x. If Tarzan follows its weekend drops it gets 108m total, I think it could actually do a bit better (WOM on Airbender was definitely worse) but I think 120 is the roof.
  6. Sucks for BFG. It's like the second wide release of this summer I really liked (after The Nice Guys) and both are BO disappointments.
  7. One of the most chilling scenes in movie history right there.
  8. Oh shit man, it's good thing you're still alive and able to type after that burn. Your dad gets my respect
  9. He's still a better classicist than practically anyone else working, that's gotta count for something.
  10. Not big on this - it's occasionally funny and beautifully shot, and both Dano and Radcliffe are fully committed, but for me it absolutely became the kind of a precious indie movie it seemingly tried to rail against early on, complete with slow-mo shots, lonely sadsack dude protagonist(s), whispery/triumphant soundtrack and insights spoken out loud. There are hints throughout of something darker and genuinely anarchic and irreverent, but it never arrives at that place, and the ending felt twice as long as it needed to be. As far as this week's films about friendship and farting go, I'm team BFG all the way.

  12. Did not expect it, but this cast a spell on me right from the start - as confidently directed as a Spielberg movie possibly could be, unassumingly gorgeous and with immediately engaging, soulful performances by Rylance and Ruby Barnhill. While it's a big-budget spectacle, what really gets me is just how patient and peaceful it is - there's zero restlessness to it, no rush to get anywhere, absolutely no need to impress, the effects are everywhere but they never threaten to overwhelm anything else. I've already seen people call it boring or say something to the effect that "there isn't much of a movie/story here", but I was practically thrilled that Spielberg and Mathison were content with basically making this a sweet hangout movie. The one problem resulting from this is that it's hard to feel any real stakes once the climax arrives - it ends up feeling like an afterthought to BFG and Sophie's relationship. But on the whole, I was completely charmed by it.
  13. Should have put Theme From Shaft on my list even though I haven't seen the movie. And this has to be among the Oscars' best moments ever, right?
  14. Thanks! You're all right in my book. And yeah, they make some good smaller neo-noirs these days, but I'd love to see another well-made serious big production.
  15. I dunno, it's still kind of a victory any time any Lynch work makes it into a top list here.
  16. That cast is ridiculous. WTF are all those people doing here.
